These are a great idea and work well to stop dogs from attacking wildlife and thus avoid the snakebite that comes with this behaviour. I realise everyone should train their dog and spend the time on doing so. But there are a lot of people who own dogs that haven't trained them. Do these dogs have to potentially get bitten by a snake because the collars are deemed cruel? I'm having a FB argument so I thought Id make a thread here and get some experienced and expert opinions. So the main question is, are they ok to use when used properly as the potential for cruelty is certainly there.

When my dog got hit by a car and had to have his leg and it was going to $5000 my friends and family thought I was crazy and that I should have put him down. Was never an option while he was able to have a quality of life. Ive thought since that maybe I am a bit crazy. cheers -

The snake mesh work ok, but i like to reenforce it with shade cloth. On large areas, like this one, there is always a chance of a snake finding its way in. Especially if on the scent of a mouse.

Bitten By A Snake... Waiting For The Vets To Call :(
snake catcher replied to miss2's topic in General Dog Discussion
Exactly Crisoavar, the pain and fear involved in a dog attack, usually results in an envenomation. Look for the bite around the shoulders, top of the head or back as this is where tha head of the snake contacts to dog during the dogs death shake. Most common in terriers as the instinctivly pick it up mid body and shake their head side to side. Like they would do with a rat to kill it. Some dogs (spitz breeds generally..and cats) kill snakes by crunching the head, rendering them comparativly harmless -
Bitten By A Snake... Waiting For The Vets To Call :(

Yay for Spud, great news. 3000 people presented for snakebite at hospital last year, only 8 of them had been envenomated and 3 needed AV. Dry bites are very common as the snake will only use venom as a defence if it has been frightened or injured. When you accidentally step on the snake, a lot of times the snake will bite you to let you know its there and wont inject venom. I have found larger snakes are more likely to give a dry bite than younger ones which live in fear of being eaten at every corner. Taipans are not known for giving dry bites but they rarely come into contact with humans and never in Victoria Im so glad Spud is doing well, -

Hey, if you want to kill snakes on your property, go for it...You are breaking the law though. It is still illegal as you kindly posted the link that proves it. -

A person shall not be convicted of an offence against this Act in respect of the harming of a snake unless it is proved that there were no grounds on which the person could reasonably have believed at any relevant time that the snake was endangering, or was likely to endanger, any person or property. The huge and handy grey area..The definition of being endangered by the snake..A snake in your yard, and no child is present, is not an immediate danger therefore it is illegal to kill. All Australian wildlife is protected unless you have a licence to kill it. Kill a snake in your yard that is not between you and your child, you are breaking the law, simple. -
This is the Chinese year of the snake,..I meant happy new year but Im sorry for the loss of any pet. Its not the snakes fault it finds itself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hi,the wire snakemesh from Bunnings is great stuff, but,I personally think the holes are capable of letting a young snake in. When using it to be really snakeproof, attach shade cloth to it as well. A baby snake has the same venom as it,s mum, just less of it. If a small dog or pup was bitten inside the mouth it could potentially be envenomated. On hot days, snakes are active in the mornings and the eavenings. believe it or not, they take cover during the heat of the day. This is a great idea.

Jacks head comes from the American staffy. His big chest and body shape comes from the Rhodesian ridgeback and his colour is pure kelpie. All his siblings were brown or dunn with a ridge on their backs and jack was the only black one. so he got to go home with us. 7 years later and we sometimes call him tripod and stumpy but we love him to death, even though he is probably the most stupid dog Ive ever had. But stupid babies need the most love, according to The Simpsons A couple of years ago, Cooper was given up to a pound because the owner could not breed from him. He has a dodgy leg which in inherited so they gave him to the pound. Thankfully he came into our life just after our old dog Sheena, an English bull terrier, passed on and is a very smart American bulldog.. He squats to piss and rolls on his back when a JRT snaps at him, but we still love the big pussy

Here ^^ is a short video of my two dogs Jack and Cooper. A few months ago Jack got hit my a car and had to have his hind leg amputated, it was very sad but as the video shows, he dosnt miss it at all now. I was amazed at how fast he recovered, so glad we didnt decide to put him down even though our pound pup has become the $5000 dog. This video was taken 1 month after the accident and I must thank Shane Simpson of Karingal veterinary hospital (KVH) for his compassion, and skill. Anyway, thought you guys would appreciate this.

When I was 19 I found a pregnant boxer bully x on the street in Adelaide. When I found her owner, he said she was no longer allowed to stay with him, she was pregnant to his friends dingo. She was a beautiful dog and the owner said I could have her or take her to the pound. I kept her and she had 5 pups, 4 of which I found homes for and one that I kept. I kept him because he was the biggest and seemed to bond with me straight away.He was also the only one that was completely white. I called him Rebel and I had him when I met my wife and he was there when the kids were born..and he was great with them and very smart, dingo looking dog. For some reason he ran under a truck at about. 11 years old. I have never been so devestated even more than when I've had a death in my family.I was crazy with grief...Well that was years ago but I still see Rebel in dreams occasionally..and I still go to to the grave under a flame tree in RedHill
