Dont Say No To Your Dog?
Nic oh lah replied to dark angel's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've just bought home a new puppy and am starting as i intend to continue - if he's exhibiting an undesired behaviour (chewing on shoes or curtains or skirting boards) he gets a firm but definately notangry "uh-uh" and once he stops and looks at me he gets a fun toy to chew on instead, and gets an enthusiastic "Good Boy!" when he chews on the appropriate article. We decided to sit and have a massive talk over dinner about exactly how we intend his training to go from the get-go the night before he arrived. When he's exhibiting desired behaviours he gets pats and praise and affirmation, and when he isn't he gets corrected immediately with swift firm "uh-uh" and is either given an appropriate outlet in play for his puppy energy, or given a simple command "sit, drop or come" and rewarded with praise. We've agreed we never yell at him and focus on positive reinforcement, but we need some form of correction. I think it's important to be able to correct my dog. That said, Chase is 10wks old and the smartest little dude - he knows come, sit and drop and is continually tidying up his toys from the living room into his crate - he's a perfect wee pooch. Can't wait till he's a big boy though. With Sophie she was a full grown GSD when she came to us and she'd never worn a collar or had any training beyond sit, and was very willful. With her we've utelised a check chain and she responds well to the short sharp noise and falls back into line. If I'd gone "purely positive" with her I could have been really really hurt by now - easy to say that "purely positive" is easy and the only way to go until you have an 18month old 34kg German Sheperd who has never been taught not to play bite her handler! -
Haha - come have cuddles then! lol. He would be soooooo much cuter if he wasn't insistant about weeing on the carpet! lol.
-
Too tired to make it all the way to the crate Sophie and Chase - best freinds already Zara the cat hates us sooooooooooooo much right now.
-
I'm no photographer so you'll have to focus on the extreme cuteness that is Chase!

Any dog has the capability to be aggressive - you really think you'd have more of a chance to defend yourself from a Rotty, GSD, Malamute, Ridgeback, another Dobe? You're kidding yourself. The shape of the dog does not make it more determined or harder to defend from. As someone who's bringing home a new puppy today i know i'll not be taking him to parks before his 12week vaccinations or for walks in strange parks where i don't know the dogs as i'd be VERY concerned about influencing him badly in his fear period, which he'll almost be in at 11weeks. Until he's older and has some kind of recall i won't be taking him ANYWHERE off leash unless i'm meeting specifically with dog's i know and trust (eg a DOL meet) and puppy school. I would be terrfied to end up with a puppy that's fearful and dog aggressive for the rest of its life because of my lack of patience when he's little. That said I think you now have a duty of care to report this person.

We found the easiest way with Sophie (because she got tangled when we used the seatbelt cause she likes to lay down and have a snooze on the back seat) was to pass the handle of her lead through the D ring on the harness and then thread the clip end of the lead through the handle end to tie it on. Then we just clip her lead to the car seat anchor in the back seat - works great - often we actually just have the lead threaded through her collar rather than putting the harness on her if its a shorter trip as she just lays on the back seat and we have a backseat buddy as it is so if we had an accident my 38kg GSD isnt flying through the windscreen or snapping her neck. She's a happy traveller. Our commodore has 1 anchor for a child seat but our Nissan Tiida has 3 ;) ;) one for each person in the back which is great because i can easily secure 3 dogs in the back - its a great little car and good head height too and plenty of boot space for gazebo's, folding chairs and other doggie stuff. Eventually we'll upgrade to a bigger 4x4 or something because we'll need to fit kids in the back and dogs in the back back, hehe. But for now Sophie is my baby so she gets it to herself.

Yeah some cable ties and hessian or shadecloth is all it takes to make a new cover. Mine are welded frames and I can't see them ever breaking - strong as anything.
-
Can i please get 2small, 4medium and 2 large?
-
Photo's by popular demand : Sophie the leggy german supermodel (GSD) is modelling the Red "Large" I-squeak ..... Vader (aka Zoolander) ( the Greyhound ) is demonstrating the Green "Medium" I-squeak. And here my long legged male model Vader is modelling his favourite Green Medium I-squeak once more - isn't he handsome. He loves it so much it's going to his new home when he finds one. Hehe - anyone in Brisbane want this green i-squeak? only $220 and you get a free Greyhound! Lol. The i-squeak is even in his photo's on the adoption profile! He loves fetch with it.
-
We feed Uncle Albers here too - my GSD girl and my Greyhound Foster Boy both love it and do really well on it, nice weight (whereas Sophie was impossible to keep weight on with Eukanuba) and shiny shiny shiny coats. I'm on Brisbane Northside and drive half an hour to Caboolture to get it every three weeks and it's so worth the trip. Next time i'm just going to bulk up and get 3-4bags. It's wonderful stuff.
-
Yep - make sure you can easily source the covers. We have 2 of them from a non-live-animals petstore chain her in Brisbane called Petwise - large was $34.95 and X-large was $39.95 and replacement hessian covers are $4.50 for each size which is great - a cover lasts us about 4-5 months before claws teeth and doggy play start to shred them.
-
Me three with ordering more i-squeaks - now that i've tried them i'll definately want more! Plus great gifts for Sophie's doggie freinds birthdays, lol. Not to mention that of the 2med and 1large I got my foster boy Vader will be taking one of the medium ones with him when he finds a home - he's blissful with the thing so i'll need to stock up on them, hehe. For the record my woofers aren't to fussy on colours but if they have a choice Vader goes for the blue and green medium ones and Sophie goes for the large red one. We now have a designated toy bucket for the i-sqeuaks to go on a top shelf in a closed laundry cupboard because where there's a will there's a way and the dogs sniff them out so they're practically under lock and key. Can't leave them with them more than 20mins or the neighbours will go deaf!

What Is The Best Way Of Changing The Worming Schedule
Nic oh lah replied to Tilly's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I just started mine on 1st day of the month so I dont forget. -
Sophie and Vader say THANK YOU PTOLOMY! I took some vid of them playing but dont know how to get it on youtube or anything and dont think anyone would watch it anyway, haha - so cool to see my foster boy greyhound playing so enthusiatcally! he LOVES the isqueak! My only regret is ordering 3 when i should have ordered like 20! lol.
-
They are here and they are a HUGE hit! i'm really pleasantly surprised as Sophie doesn't respond to toys except for the occasional tennis ball she'll chase. And Vader is soooooooooo excited by them! Whoever adopts him will have to take him with his I-squeak - lol. I've had to put them away or my neighbours will go deaf! Sophie and Vader - Isqueak Zoomies - notice Greyhound puppy bow! Vader having the funnest ever time in his life - hehe. He was pretty much Squeeing! Zoomies!

How Do Great Dane's Go On Great Barko
Nic oh lah replied to Bevo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeah just adding as i've said I feed and love Uncle Albers for Sophie that she stayed on Eukanuba large breed Puppy until she was 20months and we were satisfied she'd not be growing but just be filling out from thereon in. Keep up with a Eukanuba if you possibly can until 18-20 months at which stage you can think about trying other foods. It's not worth the risk in my opinion to make major dietry changes when you can affect their growth. And Sophie is a dog that is a fussy eater and very hard to keep weight and condition on especially now that i'm hoping to get started in agility etc so Uncle Albers is great for our situation but not for everyone. And we've chosen Uncle Albers over Great Barko due to a higher protein level, and still feed raw meat and bones aswell -
I had a near miss. Fell in love with Leonbergers when a guy bred them and had them on display at the Redcliffe Markets in Brisbane on Saturday Mornings for about a month he was there weekly and I just loved the dogs. Had the parents there on display and 5 puppies from when they were 10wks old. They may have been great dogs but he had some "interesting" veiws on the Leonbergers Club Aust or whatever it'd be called and wasn't registered breeder so i'm glad we didn't go down that route and waited. Found out through DOL that the $3K he was charging is probably about $500 more than usual also so if we do decide to get a Leo in the future we'd be better off through a registered breeder where we can have info on bloodlines etc and hip scores. I asked at the time if he was a reg'd breeder and when he said no i tried to rationalise it (before DOL days) but i'm glad I researched and didnt make a decision on impulse as they were gorgeous pups.

Next Door Neighbours Kids Throwing Knives
Nic oh lah replied to Snout Girl's topic in General Dog Discussion
If it were me and you'd already told them once i'd probably give them something in writing saying if it happens again you'll be contacting the police as to chuck over onions for a dog is the equivalent of poisoning them and throwing over weapons - i'm sure there'd be a law against it. Call the police anonymously if you want to find out where you stand and then get their advice on what formal advice you have to give these people not to do it again so they will have a threat of police intervention if it happens again. i had to follow that route with neighbours trespassing in my yard and explain that I dont want to get police involved or press charges but I have to take reasonable steps to protect my dogs. -
How Do Great Dane's Go On Great Barko

I feed my girl on Uncle Albers which is made by the same people as Great Barko - i find she does really well on it and it keeps the weight on her, and she loves the taste as do all dogs i know of who have tried it. My girl really likes it and it's a fraction of the cost - a 22kg bag costs us $34 and lasts my girl 7-8 weeks when fed with chicken necks and frames and raw meat and bones and mixed a few times a week with veges, pasta and premium mince beef. Eukanuba is like $120 and a bag lasts 6 weeks and she doesnt ike it! She'll leave it in the bowl untouched for 3days before she gets desperate to eat whereas the Uncle Albers she loves. -
The Most Ever Paid For A Photograph
Nic oh lah replied to Kirislin's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
It is beautiful. I dont know if it's $2.6mil beautiful, but lovel nonetheless. -
Sophie loves it as a treat and for training treats. Only problem is expense when you're feeding it to a 36kg Sheperd One $5 packet lasts her 2 days and I have to add kibble to it to stretch it that far! For training though it's a great treat, though we tend to use Cabanossi and Cheese as it goes furthur.

So i have a furminator and love it for my GSD and kitty kats (though recently they have started to run away when they see it - lol) but have used the Coat King as i volunteer at a local shelter when we run a fundraising hydrobath and they've got a Coat King there (and now a furminator too because i bring mine, hehe). Every customer with a GSD that i've shown the Furminator to has bought one and swears by them. Amazing on GSD, Husky, Goldies, Rotties etc - basically any dog with an undercoat. It actually works wonderfully on my foster Greyhound Vader - he LOVES his furminatorr massages. Longer hair go a coat king - for dogs like Samoyd, BC, Goldie etc, the main place where they differ in terms of the results is that the furminator doesnt cut the fur, but the coat king does. And if you're dealing with a fluff-ball dog it's probably the way to go. But I'd recommend you try them both for yourself to decide.

Sophie did a Daisy yesterday morning - haha. Lots of good smells! We hadn't taken her to a dog park in a few weeks so she was just beside herself with happiness to sniff all the smells.
-
Yep - i'm with you. My dog LOVES the park, bowling around like a moron with other dogs and as i've said earlier she was a touch DA when we got her 4 months ago as she hadn't been socialised as a pup so in her instance it's important to us to keep her comfortable just playing with other dogs, ESPECIALLY given her size. I'd rather she encountered other woofers in a non-threatening off lead environment - the park we go to is 5hectares so HEAPS of room for each dog to have their own space.
