Dogs Obedience In Brisbane
Nic oh lah replied to kirsty79's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'd recommend the same. Me and my girl Sophie have just started at Metropolitan Dog Obedience Club at Chermside in Brisbane and they're great from what i've seen thus far- and they have a system in place that a dog with a yellow ribbon on it's collar or lead, or a dog that's tied out is to be given a wide berth for a range of different reaons, so once you've had some private sessions that might be a good place to start. Depends where in Brissy you are of course -
If he likes being outside then he'll probably think he's really scored the motherload with some extra play-time, hehe.
-
If it's not torrential i'll be there I want sophie to be obediant in all kinds of weather, lol. But yeah - hopefully it stays nice and fine so i don't end up with a wet sheperd in my bed tonight, lol.
-
Sophie and me will be there in our newbies class (-: Pop over to say hi! In the beginners, i'm the only one game enough to be there with a fully-grown GSD, so hard to miss- hahah.
-
Ok - it may come as a shock seeing as i started the thread, but i completely disagree with this statment - firstly I dont think the rescue is trying to make money off the unsuspecting public, i think they are mis-informed or blatently telling fibs to find this dog a home. I don't think it's done with malice and to make big $$$$, and would'nt suggest they are anything like a petshop, though I do feel that they are somewhat supporting the DD trade and therefore petshops by proposing that a crossbreed dog is a "designer" purebreed.
-
Yep - it's a "Saint Bernard" size one - lol. Sophie doesn't pull or strain against it, it's just that she chews for the fun of it. Once tethered with something she can't chew on she'll lay there quite content to watch her surroundings.

What Strange Tastes Do Your Dogs Have?
Nic oh lah replied to mutt lover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sophie thinks shes in heaven with a Soft Serve Cone from Macca's. We're in brisbane and live right near a macca's so on the way home from the dog park on a hot day we go drive through and OH and I get frozen cokes and Sophie get's an icecream. She then stares at it intently all the way home till it gets to her bowl. -
I'm at the same club as Huski, and they basically said use what you are your dog are comfortable with. I personally choose to use a Check Chain, as it works well for me, I had a woman at a Dog Park attempt to berate me for using one as it's "not necessary" and cruel - she was there with her maltese X. I don't drag my dog along with the chain, nor do i yank on it or strangle her - the noise is what corrects her, and 95% of the time it's loose round her neck. I'm sure that she can be trained without it, but it's my preferred method for this particular dog who responds really well, but will strain against her flat collar if i tethered her by it. Also, she's not behaving because she's "scared of it" as one woman suggested - she is so hyper and happy when she spots the chain cause she knows it means we're doing something fun like training or walkies!

Groomer Has It Starting On Foxtel Tonight
Nic oh lah replied to *Heidi*'s topic in General Dog Discussion
watching this now - taped it. i'm laughing my ass off at this woman who's claiming to be communicating with the dogs telepathically. -
Woohoo! $35 and a trip to Bunnings and to Pet Wise and I have myself a benching chain! Rather than the rough edged chain from the Hardware Store i bought a 75cm Check Chain. Oh - my model is Roxy the 3yr old tortie, and unofficially Sophie's boss.
-
hehe - finally one of me and my girl! I didn't want to ruin her pretty photo's with my ugly mug! hehe. This is us at her freind Issy the Black Lab's birthday party at the beach.
-
I can't keep my eyes off the Keeshond! lol. You don't see many Keeshond's in resuce - he's gorgeous.
-
I dont think this rescue group are trying to deceive anyone ....... crosses are described as such, except this one. But we ARE giving them lots of attention, and thats a good thing for these furbubs needing homes. Hehe - maybe that was my plan all along Here's hoping they all have homes really soon.
-
Aww - he's stunning- congratulations on your beautiful new boy!
-
No, it's not that big of a deal which is why I posted it on here for some healty discussion instead of contacting the rescue organisation to have a rant - at the end of the day I hope he finds a good home, whether or not i find it irritating that he's being, in my opinion, falsely represented.
-
White Ants and GS dogs are different species but I'm sure you realise this. Thank you for clearing that up for me. You're entitled to your opinion as am I. I'm not some cross-breed hating dog snob - i'm down at my local shelter every weekend helping the crossbreed and purebreed dogs that are there for whatever reason. In my opinion this is a crossbreed dog that someone is promoting as a purebreed, in this instance to get it adopted, though this kind of thing is synonymous in my mind with BYB and Designer Dogs, therefore i dont want to see it supported. You can be amused all you want by my claim that passing off cross breeds as purebred dogs is stupid, but i'm not amused about being one of the many volunteers giving up their time and money to help the abandoned and abused victim's of irresponsible pet owners that are encouraged to buy these fluffy "purebred" mixes when they're touted as the next big thing in breeding.
-
She is stunning. If you list her on a rescue site i don't care if you call her purebred or not - i'll take her - lol. I think people are missing my point - I don't care if they're registered with ANKC or whoever, it's a cross - Labrador X Poodle - crossbreed, i dont care who registers what, in my mind it's not a purebred dog, so shouldn't be called one! Simple. A White GSD is a White GSD, not a White Ant X GSD that you've invented a jazzy new name for. And anyway, people have said he doesn't even look like a "labradoodle". If I permed my hair at work and did my best not to make others sneeze would i then be a Para-legal-oddle-doodle? People - you do not have Groodles - you have mutt's, wonderful loveable special trainable loved and glorious mutts. Why do you have to give them a stupid name to make it not sound like a mutt! It's not me judging crossbreeds - it's the people that own these dogs that are doing the judging, that's why they give them these ridiculous names. Just be happy with your crossbreed, and don't buy into this stupid "DD" fad that has moron's lined up outside petstores.
-
In this instance i fully supoort BSL - Bogan Specific Legislation.
-
Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day he's a cutie and I hope he finds a home. I just think it's stupid to try and appeal to people's vain pure-bred snobbiness when it's clearly not a purebred. In my opinon anyway. White Sheperds I think is a whole other story - I was of the impression they are a GSD but white? Please feel free to correct me so i don't go on thinking that and sound like a moron But really, a labradoodle is a labrador X poodle - so why not just write that! I almost choked trying not to laugh at my first night of obediance training the other night when we went round in a circle saying what type of dog's we had and a woman exclaimed very proudly (obviously trying to one-up all the others who had crossbreeds) that she was a proud owner of a Purebred Groodle. Oh and he has papers you know...... from pets paradise. That say he is a purebred groodle, and that he's vaccinated - lol. Since when is a vaccination certificate "paper's?" Oh and i'm not saying all people cross-breeding are back-yard shysters, but alot are, and when we're talking petshop "designer dogs" i'd rather not have anyone glorify a mix-breed as a purebreed.

Do Your Dog/s Reflect Their Sex?
Nic oh lah replied to Pollywaffle's topic in General Dog Discussion
I guess it depends on the breed too! You see little woofers that are so obviously little men, and big boofers that are bouncy girls. Apparently Sophie is not gender specific - lol. I get so sick of people asking me "how old is he" hehe. Hello, PINK LEAD, PINK COLLAR, PINK RHINESTONE NAMETAG, sigh. I think it's cause she's still a bit on a bouncy puppy and people assume she's a boy. -
http://www.bestfriendsrescue.com/dogs.html - scroll down to see the flashing banner "i am a purebred" under which we see a scruffy white dog described as Am I wrong to find this annoying? I'm in 2 minds - a little part of me thinks, oh well, that might get him adopted, whereas the more prevalent side of me thinks "why would people be promoting a "Designer Dog" as a purebred? Don't they have a problem with these BYB's producing glorified Mutts!" I'm sure he's a lovely dog, and I love all dogs, they all deserve the same care and love, but really, if we don't want to promote Back-Yard sheisters, shouldn't we be calling a spade a spade? Should someone outright-lie to find this boy a home? What are your opinions - harmless marketing ploy, or shameless lie that promote's DD's? (just making it really clear, i'm not saying this dog doesn't deserve a home as much as a purebred or anything like that, i'm just wondering what other peoples thoughts are)

Oh she knows where she got it from - her mum used it when she started with dogs like 25yrs ago i think she said. And that was overseas to the best of my knowledge. So yeah - they seem to be prevalent in the UK and i found it a great solution and a safer one than metre's long chains and those awful wirey type tieout chains that could easily tangle around a limb. I will get to the making and be sure to exhibit it proudly! To bunnings for me!
-
Not quite - hehe- i'm fussy aren't i! This is what i'm after - this is from dogstuff.co.uk - I might bite the bullet and get one, otherwise i'll get some chain or chokers and rings and clips and make one. I'd not seen anything like it till the other night and it's really great - i would just use a lead but she can eat it which means i cant turn my back!
-
Yeah these would be a death sentance for any dogs or people around her- she's powerful and if she got excited and ran she'd trip people big time. Also they seem very severe to me as i picture her getting her legs tangled up and she could get really hurt. And yeah - 4.5m is crazy long. The chain my freind had was about 1m long, and the same kind of chain as a choker chain with 2 O-rings at even distances down it and D-rings clips at both ends - perfect. Yeah - i think making one is my best option. Otherwise i'm paying the big $$$ to get one from the UK. It's brilliant for tethering.

Hi there! My dear GSD this week has eaten 1 x Kramar Webbing Lead (Pink), in addition to 2 x queen size doona's, 3 paintbrushes, 1 x neighbourschilds small scooby-doo basketball and ATTEMPTED to eat 1 x Cordless Phone Handset. I swear - i do feed this dog, and every morning after her chicken necks are safely inside her she gets a large Kong filled with peanut butter and liver treats, and some fresh toys from her toy cupboard. She just loves to destroy things. But I love her. So we're turning to the bitter-taste spray as of today Due to her chewing through a lead when i attempted to keep her tethered (without exaggeration i can tell you it was less than 20seconds - left her, walked around the house opened the back door to go inside and she beat me through the door!) we used a freinds Benching Chain at obediance the other night, and once she realised there was no chewing it she settled down and sat happily watching the proceedings. Thank you lord for the Benching Chain. Now my problem is trying to find one! Has anyone seen these stocked online or anything? Do they have a different name in Aus. or something? I must have this chain! hehe.
