Buy or borrow Susan Salo's Foundation Jumping DVDs (set of 4). They contain lots of different grids to teach the dog to use its body correctly over jumps and judge it's stride. She was a jumping rider and has now used her knowledge of teaching horses to jump correctly to teaching dogs. It is common for inexperienced horses to take off too early too. I already have them They are just very time consuming and it's hard to get the right equipment. But I already know I need to rewatch them  Time consuming?? ...watching the DVDs or doing the grids? I just set up the first exercise and work on that, just a few runs at a time, when the dog can do that one, I move on to the next one. You can buy pre-cut pvc and joiners to make a few jumps, at Bunnings, and get the cups from Clean Run. Taking the time to do the grids is well worth it as if the dog jumps incorrectly it puts a lot more strain on its body. Doing the grids. I have 4 homemade jumps but they don't fit in the backyard so I have to lug them to the local oval to practice. Yes I know I am making excuses. I will get out there and do it! That does make it a bit harder! It will be worthwhile though. Do you have anyone you can train with - that makes it a bit more motivating.

I think by reading all this that perhaps I'm not giving her enough exercise. Shes not allowed off lead belts because she has crap recall and I don't like dog parks because shes so little (although I could find a small dog park I guess). The dogs at mums have a doggy door so can get in and out 24/7 and have each other but aren't besties, the 2 boys have never really liked each other and the oldest tenty is now 16 so spends most her time downstairs as she can't climb the stairs. But I guess it's still company. Mum works 7-1pm 4 days a week other then that they're home alone. Oh I thought it was a Maltese terrier (see told ya im stoopid) In regards to walking as well, Lucy has no manners, she barks at dogs behind fences, dogs walking past, leaves that look like dogs, she sends the entire neighbourhood off barking. You're not stupid! They are not be terriers but I remember them being called Maltese Terriers when I was a kid and if you google the name it looks like they still are in some places.

Went to the link and filled it in. Didn't get the email it mentioned so went back to try again and it says already voted, so not sure if it's worked or not. I got Zaki, my gorgeous Border Collie, from Wagga Animal Rescue too, so happy to support them. -

Mad About Pets in Ferntree Gully, or you may be able to get one at an obedience club. -

My Newfie, my sister's Aussie Shepherd and a friend's Border Collie all loooove the Aussie Dog red enduro ball. It's made of hard plastic with a marble inside. Not cheap, but virtually indestructible. They make toys for zoo animals all over the world - www.aussiedog.com.au
-
They are called 'bumpers'. I got one of Katie's bumpers (www.katiesbumpers.com). I think I bought it from Air Dogs (www.airdogs.com.au). Looking at their site, they don't seem to have the Katies ones anymore but have two different brands instead. My dog loves hers.

I can't understand why some people have become so heated over this topic when no-one has claimed any scientific proof of the claims, just stated what they have noticed in their experience. I don't think anyone who cares about their dogs would be stupid enough to assume that coconut oil or anything else prevents ticks without thoroughly checking their dog regularly. On the other hand most people accept that drugs handed out by their doctors are safe to use because they have been 'scientifically tested' but that does not always guarantee saftey either - I'm sure all the people born without arms and legs, because their mothers were told it was safe to take Thalidomide for morning sickness during pregnancy, would attest to that. I have found this thread interesting and appreciate all the info people have given. I am going to try coconut oil for my dogs. If they show benefits that's great, if not, no harm done. AA - I admire your calm and reasonable responses to the aggressive responses by a couple of posters.

Good Idea: Local Parks Department

What a great idea. -
Maybe that's how it causes people to lose weight!

Very interesting websites. Where do you buy it and how much to do you give a Newfie? I just bought mine from the health food shop. It was around $12 for a 380g jar. I am working up to giving my BC's 1 tablespoon a day but would like someone to confirm that as not being excessive. I ate a spoonful myself before breakfast & found it a bit sickly, but I think that was more the thought of eating a spoonful of oil, rather than the coconutty flavour. If I want to use it, personally, to help me lose weight, I have to build it up to 4 tablespoons a day....Hmmmmmm...not sure if I could consume that much :D Thanks Sheena- I'll check it out next time I get to the shops. I can't imagine consuming 4 tablespoons of oil a day either. Also you'd go through it pretty quickly with a human and the dogs.

Puppy Ob Training Videos
perfect partners replied to woody2shoes's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Have a look at Dogwyse and Leerburg websites - DVDs and books on training puppies there. Waiting until final vaccinations means that you miss almost all of the critical socialisation period when the puppy should be taken out and socialised with lots of different people, sights, sounds, dogs of various breeds, etc. I'd be taking the puppy out and about right now - not to dog parks, but to places it's likely to go as it gets older, meeting people and other healthy, vaccinated dogs, other animals, etc. Behaviourists will tell you that most of the problems they deal with stem from lack of socialisation during this critical period. -
I didn't know either until I just recently adopted a rescue Border Collie who has pink skin on his nose. Love the photo of your boy - he looks gorgeous. I love Bullies - the first dog we had when we were kids was a Bulldog.

Isn't Filtabac zinc based? I've used that on horses, but they don't lick it off.
