  1. Yep, all purebred puppies fron an ANKC registered breeder, whether main or limit are registered with a pedigree name. There's a limit on the number of characters in a name (30ish I think) so the rest of the name depends on how long the prefix is. After the prefix the name bit depends on the breeder, some have litter themes, some incorporate parents' names, some work with puppy buyers, some let puppy buyers choose what they want. I think the names need to be not similar to other registered names so the registering body has a say as well and the pup may end up with a second or third preference pedigree name depending on what's available. Pet name is really up to the puppy buyer, although some breeders like to have a decision early on (before pedigree is registered) so they can start teaching the puppy its name. In the end though the puppy buyer will be raising the dog so can always change it's name if they want. For example - Riley's breeders have a history of giving their pups pedigree names starting with S. They decided his pedigree name and all the litter names incorporated their dad's name. I was asked to pick his pet name at around 3 weeks, when I still had a list in my head and just went with top of the list on the day, so they could start teaching him his name. Quinn's pet name was picked in my head long before she was born - I already had in mind that my blue Merle Aussie Shep girl would be Quinn (unless it had totally not suited her for some reason). Her litter had a "Grand" theme, the breeder and sire owner picked the pedigree names for each pup.
  2. Oh dear fuzzy, feeding a dog because it "looks hungry"! That dog has your dad and step mum wrapped around her paw! I'm sure there are plenty of others who operate like that too tho. You're exactly right, "hungry" or not, if they are overweight they are taking in more than they need. Energy in vs energy out. (says me who could easily stand to lose 10kgs)
  3. Another one here who can open the fridge, and cupboards!! The cat can also open cupboards. Thank goodness for child locks. The occasional fridge raid does not make for an overweight animal though, if it happens I need to compensate for the extra calories by reducing intake for the next little while. Having said that, I'd say mine are all on the chunky side of ideal, Quinn especially. I really need to get a kilo or two off her. Funnily enough I've mentioned that to other people and they tend to say "no, she's fine, she doesn't need to be skinny!"
  4. So sad, and so avoidable I too feel bad for the driver of the car. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if a dog is good enough to be walked off leash, it's good enough to be walked on leash (meaning if you're sure it's always going to walk reliably next to you where it should be then it's easy enough to clip a leash on).
  5. Oh goodness, I wouldnt have said any of my three were reliably toilet trained until at least 6 months old (probably older ) I'm a lazy toilet trainer though so don't expect it to necessarily take that long, but definitely don't feel bad about her not having it down pat at 16 weeks :) I agree with perse that it would be helpful to have a professional come and check out the situation so you can feel more confident about what is actually causing her behaviour and how best to calm her down.
  6. Heehee, that makes much more sense!! It must have been pretty funny to watch :D
  7. *Like* Great advice! Just wanted to mention, Sandra said that pup is probably mouthing females because they make more fun squeally noises then puppy sniffer suggested a high pitched squeal to let pup know when he's mouthed inappropriately. Could be confusing! puppy sniffer, hope you don't mind me speaking for you - but what she means (I think) is do a high pitched, quick, loud yelp just like a puppy or dog does if you accidentally stand on a paw or something. The girly squealing us human females do when little puppy mouths come at us is different :)
  8. Hehe, yeah all you have to do is keep some Maremmas, no work at all for you ;)
  9. Happy bday pretty girl! Love her stylish collars and her snow jacket :D My (now big) baby girl Quinn turns 1 in a month, I can't believe how fast her first year has gone!
  10. Does he only do this when he's trying to grab your shoes? If so it's sounds like he's invented a great little game where he bites at your shoes, you tell him no (possibly shaking/moving your foot to get him off) then interact with him all over the place while you talk to him, offer him toys and chase him round the room. And he doesn't want the game to end so he barks to say keep going, and then keeps getting your attention :) When he grabs at your feet you could try freezing, crossing your arms, very deliberately looking away from him and staying frozen and ignoring him until he leaves you alone and is quiet. THEN he gets your attention and toys. If he is barking in all sorts of circumstances then I agree with the others about walking off and ignoring him til he calms down and is quiet.
  11. Liz, I'm confused! Did you miss some words? :)
  12. That sounds so cute! I can just picture them leaning there soaking up the sun :) I haven't heard of sitting on feet being a dominance thing, how so?
  13. I believe I made that point upfront in my first post. I wasn't talking about posts seeking to help dogs.... more the "lets all get outraged together" variety. It's tiresome. No, it's not what the Rescue sub forum is for. Because links to Gumtree ads are NOT allowed. And dogs on Gumtree are generally not classed as 'rescue.' As someone who runs a Rescue Group, I'd hate to see the MAIN rescue forum clogged up with Gumtree Ads. That's NOT where they need to go. They need to go somewhere else, in a sub-forum of that. Because, as strange as it may sound, even those who Rescue don't always want to know about Gumtree Ads. Maybe they don't need to go anywhere. I think we can all find Gumtree if we choose to look. Fair points well made HW. See, I just needed to talk myself around in a big circle to get back to the beginning and say yes, I agree ;)
  14. Hehe, yes I've noticed DOL is very good for wallet lightening! And time eating... Tollers, I don't know the circumstances of how the Breeders forum got separated. I love reading it though and I think anyone here who never looks at it is missing out. If it wasn't locked though, wouldn't it be annoying for you to have 5 million "cute puppy" responses to evey photo? Because that's what I always want to say when I look at the pics in there :) and then there would be the "oh can I have one?" posts, and random questions from people who haven't even done basic research into breeding?
  15. I don't like the Politically Correct nation, so I'm all for this thread being made. I think HW makes some good points here and the ads aren't as useful here as they would be in other places [preaching to the choir/those who can't help]. I've already made points about why I think they are useful but totally understand where HW is coming from. So what if there was a sub-section somewhere where people could post some links to Gumtree ads, where dogs might be in danger or in need of immediate rescue? Would that not stop annoying others but also make sure others who do want to see them, look for them? Like I said before, I think some of the ads posted here have really helped dogs. Personally, I know at least one has for fact. I know the links aren't allowed, but what if they were? For one specific sub-section? It'd at least keep it to one section where those who wanted to see them, could see them. That could be a viable solution. Thats what the Rescue sub forum is for! Or the breed sub forums. If people are posting because they genuinely want to help a particular dog be rescued I'm sure they would be welcome to post there. I would hate to see esp the Rescue forum clogged up with vents though so I would expect people to think carefully about their motivation before posting in there. And, thinking out loud, if you don't feel comfortable posting your concern about an online ad or petshop in Rescue or Breed sub forum maybe those are the threads you don't need to post at all...?
  16. But how does discussion ONLY between experienced pure bred people promote and increase knowledge about pure bred dogs? Aren't we (not that I'm including myself as experienced but YKWIM) better off encouraging new people, however annoying, to come and learn? On other note, some new people do come in all guns blazing and either don't read the rules or any other threads at all before posting - which is a bit silly really - or they are intentionally stirring up trouble, troll anyone? I know exactly what you mean about newbies who join up, post 10,000 threads about their BYB/pet shop puppy, and everything else under the sun, then argue till they're blue in the face why they are right. Those people clearly don't want to learn from being here and are just annoying... Although I do find the train crash threads fun to watch *gets popcorn*
  17. Same with me katdogs, I came to DOL for help and advice with my first ever puppy, a BYB poodle x. Since then I've become involved in the world of obedience and dog sports and now have two more dogs, both of which are ANKC purebreds. I've learned so much about dogs and now try to advocate responsible, ethical, healthy breeding, placement and training of pets - spreading the word :) If I had come across DOL and found only the Breeders, The Show Ring and Dog Sports type forums I wouldn't have stuck around and learned what I have (although I now find those forums interesting and regularly read them). The variety of General and the opportunity to talk about all sorts of doggy things is what makes people join and stay (IMO)'
  18. Me neither. But when it's thread after thread from someone who bought a BYB pup and who then drains this place dry for info and DEFENDS their purchase then I get a bit fragile. I do agree with you on that point HW. And I have to admit sometimes I read some of the gumtree/petshops threads and think people are trying to win points or something for some reason... But who hasn't had a vent here and there, I certainly have! I live by myself and don't really have "doggy" friends or family IRL so I often want to come on here and have a whinge. Usually (not always) I calm down and don't start a thread about it, but some people work things through by talking about them, no skin off my nose *shrug*
  19. Just looking through the first two pages of General and I count 5 of the 50 threads that could possibly sole relate to the discussion, knowledge and promotion of ANKC registered pure breeds. We would have very quiet forums if only topics meeting those criteria were allowed. Technically dog training and behavior are not ANKC issues and yet threads about those things are probably the most common and amongst the most useful. I think of forums as communities too, made of people brought together by a common interest and/or belief but where all sorts of things can be discussed.
  20. Great photo! Saxon the "working dog" *eye roll* went on a roo chase the first time he saw any. It was at a camp ground where we had a cabin, roos everywhere. Saxon was maybe 1yo if that (5kgs) and bolted off the deck of the cabin to chase a couple of roos around the camp grounds then across a road. Eventually came back for the treat bag, it was very scary. Given Quinn's laziness and Riley being not the sharpest crayon in the box, my only non- working breed dog Saxon is probably the only one that would actually give chase to much of anything, roo or baa!!
  21. Today at the park there was a lovely male Husky, who I believed was an adult, although youngish, based on his size, appearance and behaviour with the other dogs - he was very calm and controlled with a variety of ages and sizes. Weirdly though, Riley did his "I'm so tough" act a couple of times with this Husky (snapping and growling at a dog that really hasn't been problematic at all, bullying really - this is a problem behaviour of his that we work on and is improving dramatically). He only ever does it to male dogs younger than him (I always ask as I've been working to figure out the triggers) and he's 18 months old so I was confused about why he was doing it to a much larger dog his age or older. Asked the owners, the Husky is 8 months old. So I couldn't tell, but Riley definitely could!
  22. Riley and Quinn are huge bitey face fans as well! (they are playing it as I type...) and as others have said there's also bitey leg, bitey neck etc. Riley hangs off the fur around Quinn face and neck sometimes. They amaze me with the control they have, seeing muzzles drawn up in a snarl and teeth flashing looks scary, especially so close to delicate eyes and ears, but they never have any damage. There is lots if noise as well and somehow it's at a pitch that drowns out tv noise matter how loud it it, how do they do that?? So annoying ;) Riley likes to lick ears etc too. My old lady cat used to let him as long as he was calm and gentle, I think she secretly quite liked it :) Riley also likes to clean other dogs teefs for them! He sticks his tongue right inside their mouths if they'll let him and licks all around their teeth and gums...weirdo!
