How Many Puppies Are Sold In Pet Shops Each Year?
Simply Grand replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
I doubt any official figures are kept, I can't think of any central body that would collect the info?? I suppose how Jed did it would be the only real way to get an idea... It would be sooo interesting to know numbers and where and why they vary. If microchipping requirements were consistent nationally and (big and) people all actually followed the requirements stats could probably be put together that way but can't see that happening anytime soon -
Well I Didn't Think Of That One!

Nooooo! If she kept pooping it would have spread through the whole belt mechanism! Although it would be funny to see her roll off the end in poo position as the belt kept going  -

Kennel Recs For Riley & Quinn In Sydney
Simply Grand replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
Renbury is looking good Looks like they put them out in separate grassed yards for exercise so they could run around together apart from the other dogs. And they can be in the kennel together and take a blanket/toy. And the location and price are really good as well, conveniently :) I'll give them a call, thanks td. Thank you all for the input :) -
omg dogmad!! It almost makes me giggle, imagining them saying to people look at our lovely chihuahua puppy as they point to a kelpie... Trouble is it's actually really sad that people are being sold these dogs that are blatantly not what they are sold as and people buying them don't know any better

These stories are making me feel a bit better about Quinn! She too loves jumping at people's face to 'kiss' them She's not too bad with going for my face now and she doesn't jump on me just randomly but she's still all over me when I get home or when I get up. I end up with claw scratches bruises all over me but luckily not on my face too much. Actually I've just remembered I do currently have a bruise over my eyebrow from an open mouth that hit me above and below my eye So maybe I'm just used to it and don't notice so much, sigh... I will try to follow everyone's advice too!

Kennel Recs For Riley & Quinn In Sydney
Simply Grand replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks wuffles :) The four nights are Wed to Sat, I'll be back on Sunday. I'd prefer not to leave them home alone for that long just in case, but it would be great to have them at your house. I just don't know if I can subject you to it!! Quinn hasn't outgrown her destructiveness quite yet and Riley's a barker If it's ok with you I'll see how I go with kennels but keep you in mind as well? -
Good on you for acting on Ker Like others have said, I reckon someone has made up a "breed" name for a cross, maybe not realising it's an actual breed. How annoying that there are going to be people out there saying they have an Aussie Shepherd when they have one of those pups No wonder people often think Aussie's are not pure breeds.

Kennel Recs For Riley & Quinn In Sydney

Maybe the Heathcote Hanrob is better than the Airport one? Those with not so great experiences, which was that at? They are pretty robust, especially if they are in together, I do worry about Riley running loose with unknown dogs though, as I said he gets snappy and I manage him a lot when we're at the dog park. If I could be sure him and Quinn could have their exercise with just them and maybe some other confident adult dogs, with human supervision, they would be ok I think. Oh, and I'd he happy to pay for the two of them to have running/play time alone together. -

Thank you katdogs, that's really nice!! Problem is Riley is quite a bully with puppies, and is temperamental in general. Quinn on the other hand is great with other dogs and looooves humans. I really appreciate the offer and if I need to may ask you to take on Quinn, but I'll see if I can kennel them together first. :) -

Danios, that's awful, your poor boy There are a number of positive reviews on the net (which i take with a grain of salt) but the negative experience seem to be around dogs getting sick here and them not doing what they they do re feeding and updates. I would be very worried about Riley running around with a bunch of other dogs as he can be snappy with younger dogs and i would hate for him to start a fight and get hurt, hurt another dog or spend the whole time stressed. They say they offer individual exercise times (for a sizable fee) but I'm not sure I would trust them to take them out on their own (the two of them together). -
Heehee, Aphelion for about the first two years I had my Saxon I swore I'd never call him Saxxy (or Saxie) but other people, especially kids, kept calling him that and eventually I found myself doing it too
-
I'm going to Sydney (from Canberra) for four nights at the end of Feb for my sister's wedding :) I'm staying in a pet friendly b&b in Coogee and Saxon will stay with me but it will be too much have all three with me at the place so I need to put Riley (Sheltie) and Quinn (Aussie Shepherd) in kennels for the time. I would like to take them to Sydney rather than have them somewhere in Canberra as if they get sick or something I don't really have anyone in Canberra who could check on them or get them out. Can anyone recommend somewhere not too far out of the way when I'll be coming in from Canberra on the M5 to Coogee? Or even somewhere further out if it's really good. Hanrob at Sydney Airport would be ideal location wise, but I'm wary of a large organization with a flashy website Has anyone had any experience with them? Thanks all :)

 I noticed a few Boobies! I posted mine in the other thread (that was nearly a year ago?? ) but will go again, they've probably changed a bit. Here are the current popular ones: Saxon - Saxxy, Saxamaphone, fluffhead, scruffhead, scruffy, cuteness Riley - Rileypants, Rileyface, pointyface, fluffhead, burpy Quinn - Boofhead, boofy, Quinny, Quinny Quinston, Missy Charlie (the cat) - Puddin, furry, furry purry ETA - the dogs seem to know some of their nicknames but they know all of Charlie's plus his real name, and if I mention any of them they run off looking for him

People's Prejudice Against Dog Breeders.
Simply Grand replied to asal's topic in General Dog Discussion
I feel exactly like you Aussie And SSM. I chose to get my pets, they are part of my family now and are my responsibility. I don't expect my breeders to be laying down the law on what I do with my dogs (feeding, training, even desexing) once they are home so I can't have it both ways and expect them to take the dogs back just because I need or want them to. Of course it would be nice if they wanted to and were able, as they would obviously know the dog and the breed, and I would talk to them before I rehomed the dogs elsewhere and would appreciate assistance from them, but it would still be my ultimate responsibility to find the best home, not the breeders'. ETA - Aussie, I also totally agree with your other criteria for choosing a breeder. My three were bred and raised in three quite different environments, by 1. A byb 2. A very experienced showie and reg breeder and 3. A brand new reg breeder, with support from the sire's more experienced owner. 1 lived in a family household with mum and litter mates and interacted with another female and her slightly older litter, lots of interaction with people esp kids until they went to their homes. 2 litter was raised in the house with older breeder and her OH, mum went back to live in the kennel setup once pups were weaned, pups stayed inside together, I don't think they had a whole lot of socialization outside the breeder's family and dogs. 3 lived outside in a small kennel/pen setup, with mum until they went to their homes, let out to run the yard every day, socialized with some people but not kids. I was happy with all three breeders, I'm very happy with all three dogs. What they all had in common was that they love and treat their dogs well, I was able to meet either both parents or at least mum and their other older dogs, I went to all of their houses and could see where the pups lived and that the pups and the older dogs were happy and confident in the environment and around the breeder, and were unphased about me coming in as a stranger, indicating to me that they had not been mistreated. Unfortunately I didn't know about health testing with 1, and to be honest I didn't get health test results with 2, I trusted that given the breeder has been around and successful in showing and sports for so long they would know what they were doing, yes naive but no problems so far. 3 I got copies of all the health tests for dam and sire. So anyway my point is, for me there are not really specific individual things that I could list as what I want from a breeder, other than happy, healthy, well temperamented dogs and puppies, willingness to communicate with me and willingness to let me see how their dogs and puppies live (I know their could be genuine circumstances where a breeder wouldn't want to do that but it would be a deal breaker for me, just in case...) -
Mine run around quite happily with the lead attached too sometimes, it's not the norm when we're at home but sometimes on the way in or out I let go of the leads, they run around for a couple of minutes then come over to me to have leads and harnesses off.

People's Prejudice Against Dog Breeders.
Simply Grand replied to asal's topic in General Dog Discussion
FWIW I don't think prejudice against reg PB breeders on any of those grounds come from the pet buying public, if they exist (not saying that they don't) they come from some other breeders and PB people. ETA 'some'. -
From what I've seen and heard Bo is very much loved and an integral part of their family :) And I'm pretty sure I've heard that the Pres does do toilet duty! He said to his daughters in his speech when he was re-elected that "girls, one dog is enough for now". Heehee, they must be pestering for another one.

Ok, I'm posting again because maybe i have misunderstood what you are saying DD. It sounds to me as if you are saying that it is not atypical human male behaviour to have sex with animals of other species. It appears from your posts that you are saying in some cases men who have sex with animals are deviant but in other cases they are just "men being men ".
-
Umm, what was the topic again? Germany is to ban sex with animals. I doubt they'd be bringing in legislation just for a couple of people. It's called bestiality and has been around since animals became human. And animals didn't wake up one morning and find they were human. Took a year or two or millions. I'm aware of what it's called. I believe beastiality is a modern psychological term, I doubt the term was around two million years ago. Animals didn't become human, humans are still animals. I shall re-word - do you really think human males behaving typically of human males, even with a strong biological drives to reproduce, feel the need to have sex with with other unrelated species? Again I say, come on!
-
No doubt I will be jumped on from a great height, but then I need to lose some weight. The point that is missed by so many people as that many men will stick it anywhere they can. Yes, a lot of them are totally deficient human beings, but many of them are just men. And, no, I am not a man hater; I have been in the world for a long time. And, yes, I know women are involved in totally ahborrent practices as well. This is a ridiculous thing to say, no matter how long you've been in the world! I agree that many men just being men find it hard to turn down sex with a willing human partner, but no way would MANY men just being men have sex with animals. Come on.
-
This is one way to frame it, but we should bear in mind that animals don't consent to most things we do with them - they don't consent to obedience school, eating Royal Canin instead of Eaglepack, sleeping in the lounge instead of the bedroom etc etc. The reason it is wrong is because it's wrong to take advantage of a situation where you have power over a less powerful sentient being who could be damaged by predatory behaviour - be it an animal, a child, a mentally disabled adult, etc. Plus it's just disgusting. Yes, you're exactly right and explained that much better than me!
