Stella Locked Up For Two Years, Now For Euth. Bsl Uk
Simply Grand replied to _PL_'s topic in In The News
Presumably the owners hadn't agreed to either surrender her or have her put down and were hopin to get her out so it had to go through the whole court battle before anything could happen. And the welfare of the poor dog probably wasn't considered in expediting the court case -

There's lots of reasons, mostly stuff like: - Accidental litters - Breed enthusiasts who do not want to see the breed die out and good genetics be lost forever - Random crosses (deliberate or accidental) from parents that are not of any of the prohibited breeds, however the puppies come out with genetic shuffling that make them 'type' (i.e they fit the visual standard the government uses to identify prohibited breeds). Remember that the legislation isn't based on breed, it is based on appearance. Plus rules changing after the fact, plus people not knowing about the laws and/or it not even occurring to them that there may be laws regarding dog breeds and breeding, plus of course some people not caring about the law. Poor dog -
I don't know if it differs from state to state but you probably have to go the the state canine association websites for the actual guidelines rather than ANKC :)

Yep, I agree with this. There are a hell of a lot of pet owners out there who just don't look beyond what their vet and maybe their past experiences tell them. Plenty of people don't note subtle changes in their pets' behavior, don't handle them enough all over to note new lumps and bumps, don't take note of the frequency and erm, quality? of their toileting, and are not aware of the symptoms of serious illness. In those cases, if a reminder gets them in to see a vet I think it's a good thing. Same with desexing, if people haven't thought about how their pets' behaviour may change if they are entire, aren't prepared to manage that, haven't planned how to prevent unplanned matings, aren't set up to properly manage a litter, will sell or give unwanted babies to anyone who asks etc then I think early desexing is the lesser evil. For us, who have more knowledge, feel confident in your choice, explain your position and if you don't like your vet's response either agree to disagree or go elsewhere.

Love Secret's crazy run  and Neko looks so huge compared to her little bubba! -
I have a funny video of Quinn doing it the first time she encountered a tree covered in empty cicada shells, she was sooo confused because they obviously looked like creatures gripping on to the tree trunk but must have smelled weird and none of them moved (obviously, being just empty shells). She sniffed around for aaages and every time she actually touched one with her nose she'd leap back  She has encountered a lizard and a frog in the yard and has just stood barking at them, so I don't think she'd go after a snake. The lizard and frog just stood frozen until I took the dogs away though whereas a snake might strike so I hope I never have to find out what she'd actually do.

And I think it certainly wouldn't hurt the world of pure breeds to start thinking of things like this to show that pure breed dogs make great pets, aren't just for showing, aren't unhealthy and inbred and that the people involved with them aren't weirdos obsessed with money and winning shows. We've seen how effective a bit of clever marketing from the "designer breeds" people has been, rescues and shelters are becoming increasingly innovative and good at using social media and word of mouth. Getting out in a coordinated approach to explain the real benefits of pure breeds and responsible breeders is the only way there can be any hope of keeping up with them. And really, even for young puppies (6 weeks + and had a vac) the risk can be managed pretty well. Carrying the pups, not putting them down, disinfecting hands before touching them... People in offices are not very likely to be carrying parvo on their work clothes really. And for older puppies who are fully vaccinated it's no different than going anywhere else. Hopefully thought goes into which pups are selected to go out and about, but most puppies (ok not all) are pretty robust and able to handle some car rides and cuddles, and I think assuming the worst of people and writing off a whole program like this as not worth the risk is overly cautious.

Oh I saw that but didn't make the connection. See, this is why Franklin is such a dangerous precedent, the kelpie's owner could argue that it's ok for Franklin to roam so why should he have to keep his Kelpie contained? (I don't know the full story, just basing that on the fact the Kelpie keeps being out)

Oh she's so cute! The parents do look long legged but they can obviously do their job :) As long as your pup is a healthy weight I wouldn't worry if she is lighter than others of the breed.
-
Oh gosh, definitely a mix I would want to get as much manners training and bite inhibition from littermates as possible. No reflection on you Noobie, and well done on researching and planning for how best to care for your pup, but people who breed and then shirk the responsibility they have to the puppies and their future owners in setting them up for as good a life as possible make me angry.

Aww, meant to be Rayhay :) Of course she will never replace Greta but she will be a whole new adventure for you.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Introduces Queensland's Strictest Pe
Simply Grand replied to Maxiewolf's topic in In The News
I agree it's dumb and like everything, doesn't target the right people because the people who follow the rules aren't the ones causing the problems anyway. I wonder how difficult it will be to get the breeders permit? $100 is cheap so I doubt they will put a whole lot of time into actually investigating whether those who want to keep entire animals / breed are doing it in the best interest of the animals. -
The antlers are great, really long lasting and even my fussy-about-what-he-chews poodle x likes them :)

Yep, if a male suitor of mine couldn't cope with a bit of doggy diarrhea he wouldn't be suiting me for long. -

In a weird way that probably only dog people would understand, that is such a cute story!! :D I agree you went above and beyond and certainly wouldn't expect anything more, but you could carry a bottle of water with one of those sports pop tops on it, you can get a bit of pressure if you squeeze them to wash away what you can from concrete. -
I posted on her page again yesterday asking for an update, no response yet.

Ronja, good on you for getting involved and providing simple and practical advice about how people could genuinely help Franklin if they really wanted to :)
