Neighbours Dog Digs Into My Backyard
chuckandsteve replied to poodlesrule's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our neighbours cat got in our yard, my dog bit him. We offered to pay the vet bills just for the sake of our dogs. She shares a fence line and if she wanted to poison our dogs she could. I have heard the terrible stories and while she has always been nice and I wouldn't ever think she would do that still possible we dont know her that well. It was more to keep everything neighbourly. She was actually fantastic about it, she acknowledged it was her fault, also acknowledged that she wanted to blame our dog but she knew that wasn't fair. Would she have been so nice if we hadn't gone above and beyond to help with her cat?? Who knows but a few hundred to keep our dogs safe is worth it. I would pay anything to keep the dogs safe -
Two Dogs Not Getting On
chuckandsteve replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for the advice it has helped in working out what i think the real problem is. I believe the foster is fear aggressive, however only slightly. So the problem is when my dog gives the warning growl he jumps in for a real bite. It has improved as he has settled in. When I first started walking him he use to get all tangled in my legs which I just put down to never being walked. It improved and I walked him with my dogs. However I took him for a walk on his own last night and every time we walked past a person or dog he ran between my legs. So he is going for private training. It is easily managed and is causing us no problems but he needs the training and assessment if we want to rehome him. -
Two Dogs Not Getting On

You could be right, we have had 2 other Staffy fosters, one he didn't get on with but she was pregnant so put it down to that. The other was probably more Kelpie than Staffy, so maybe we shall try for a different breed next time -
Sorry I didn't mean pound for rehoming, I thought maybe one of the volunteers could put her in contact with a trainer.... if she was interested in that sounding like she is not

Has she tried calling the pound? they have a big rescue network there and they might be able to help

There is a track from Sandy Point to the inlet, which is like a bush track its about 5kms i think. The walk from the surf club to the inlet round the beach is really nice and my dogs love running over the dunes. But they can only go to the inlet outside 9am-6pm. They do let us load the dogs onto our boat between those times and we drive them out to a bit of beach no one is on. There is a general store, fish and chip/pizza/ cafe in one. There is a bar and the surf club is sometimes open for drinks. Its a nice quiet town big bigger than Warratah (though I never go there as in-laws have house at Sandy) Worth at least one trip and I guess you can see if you like it. It is very dog friendly, most of the dog restictions on the beach are ignored but I guess if they have people really doing the wrong thing that will change.

So we have a foster at the moment and we have had a lot of fosters, that is not getting on with one of my dogs and we just can't work it out. My dog has always got on with the fosters, had an issue with a pregnant one we had but she wasn't very good with other dogs and pregnant so put it down to that. Anyway they are both male Staffy xs, they get on like the best of friends running around together playing fetch together, sleep in back of car together on the way to the beach, play fight on the couch while I try to push them off. Then they have a fight, serious enough my boy has a bite mark on his face. 5 minutes later best of friends again. I just don't know whats wrong, sometimes it is near me sometimes it is playing fetch. My dog growls first but the fosters attacks first. The foster is fine with my malt X. He harasses him, my boy gives a little growl and the foster leaves. We have worked out we have only had 1 boy foster and it was almost a year ago so could it be a male/male thing? We are doing a dog behaviour course on the weekend but are thinking we should get a trainer out before then cause we just can't work it out...

We are at Sandy Point all the time. You can pretty much take your dog to the dog section any time, even though its only morning and evening, last year the ranger told me I could anytime but I think she was wrong lol, also if she saw people at other sections she just told them they had to go to the dog beach part. I believe they have to either call the council or police to fine you so if they approach and tell you to move just do and you should be fine. The beach there is so huge that I think most people work on the basis if they don't want to be near dogs they go the oppersite way of the dog beach. edit: Also everyone lets them off leash at the dog beach part, so if you don't like that probably not a good spot for you.

Giant Schnauzer Rescue
chuckandsteve replied to Loopy Lola's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Will the vic rescue take him? Maybe you could start a chip in for the flight? -
Interesting question.... One of my dogs hates german shepards, dont know why. Its just german shepards one day he even went at a fully black one i didnt even realise was a german shepard. He is always put on lead and taken from the park when a german shepard comes in though, its his fault so he leaves

Sheridan, no issues with the new regime at all I think they are so far doing a great job. I just really like to see they check all the boxes. If not thats fine they are trying but they should own it. My experience in rescue is that people are out there saying how great they are doing but dont admit stuff ups, or where they aren't quite as good as they like (ie areas to improve on).
-
I understand TNR might not be possible but they dont even address it. They don't say its something we are working towards, something we find not practical for the area. On his blog he brings it up so why not at GAWS? I dislike the LDH and RSPCA too but if he is going to have a go at them then I feel he needs to be consistent. Hopefully they release more stats soon, I have heard dogs are still going well, not so great with cats

The part i find odd is on the website they address all of the points about the no kill equation but not the trap neuter release part for cats A part they really need

chuckandsteve replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)

Kennel Cough

Thanks for the advice. She is a little better in the last day, less snotty. Vicdrg - i am very sad my luck has ended but at least ill learn something. It had to happen sooner or later She was private transport, i think only dog, though the transport is unquarantined, so assumption has to be made they have it when they arrive -
Kennel Cough
chuckandsteve replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thanks, it was confirmed by a vet and i had a weeks medication, which has now run out. She is in her own run, my dogs are vaccinated but still keeping separate. I'll put her on the doxy and give that a go and if we have no luck i'll take her to my vet. Would be unlikely to be allergies as she has moved 3 times, pound to a local person holding her to 6 hours south to me. -
I currently have my first foster with kennel cough (im up to about 20 fosters so pretty lucky its taken that long) Anyway I've had her just over a week and while it was getting better the last 2 days it seems to have gotten worse and she just ran out of meds. She also has a very snotty nose but is full of activity. Should I be worried and taking her to the vet. She saw the vet near the pound, who didn't actually tell me anything, she just arrived on the transport with the anti-biotics with her papers. I have also heard it can be treated with doxy which we have plenty of, should I put her on that?

Keeping Dogs Cool In Trailer
chuckandsteve replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I totally hadnt thought of that makes perfect sense though -
Hi, I was wondering if anyone had tips for keeping dogs in a trailer cool I have a weather station so we can keep an eye on the temp from the car and have been thinking I should put some ice blocks under the blankets for them, giving them water is tricky as it spills. Hubby is designing a hose thingy so I can just put it through the wire doors when we stop for water Any other ideas? Maybe im being over the top but its 31 tomorrow and the dogs have to be in the trailer for 6 hrs, if we dont stop, hopefully we will only stop for petrol and to give them a drink

Community Foster Care Networks
chuckandsteve replied to vicdrg's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Yes we need a state rule as a dog can get picked up in a neighbouring council I would like to see something like a 3rd dog permit but for a foster dog permit. I think it would stop ppl taking on too many fosters, in that now it is so hard to do the right thing so if they have 1 unregistered dog why not have 5. Where as if you have a permit for 1 i think ppl would be more likely to stick to it ABC yes the bull breed thing is annoying, but the best way is to work with the law so they cant catch you out and registration is the only thing that will save any dog. The dog i had get out was a lab, they tried to call pit bull so no dog is safe unless registered. They wrote amstaff on release once they failed to prove she was pitbull despite all her papers saying lab -
Community Foster Care Networks
chuckandsteve replied to vicdrg's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Fantastic thread vic dog. I have had so many problems with the council and the random things they have told me They are happy for me to foster, if i have the dog under 3 months without registering it, but wont give it to me in writing. What good is that? The 3rd dog permit applies to a certain dog so each new dog needs a new 3rd dog permit. I have dogs average 3 weeks and permit takes longer than that to apply for. Followed by 3rd dog permit applies to any dog Happy for me to have 3 dogs no permit so long as they are registered somewhere ie anyones house doesn't have to be mine. All make no sense at all My mothers council has given her completely different explainations. Hers is easier as it is only a second dog so so just re registers each one. It is all made harder by the fact we mainly take bull breeds, so can't afford to have a dispute with the council over said dog if one gets out and the rules change again -
Who Are The Better Rescue Groups ?
chuckandsteve replied to redangel's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Very tricky question Vic is interesting, I have dealt with a lot of groups, because I generally look at all the questions for help and just stick my hand up for whatever I can do and dont really care who is asking. I would give one list for fostering and a different list for adopting. In very general terms if people are looking to foster, they don't want to go to a group that is always appealing for help with things like short distance transport(say within Melbourne), moving items and the general work that is involved with rescue. These groups tend to be time poor and therefore dont have time to deal with there foster carers. If they are always appealing for foster carers chances are should something go wrong with your foster (ie not get on with your pet) they probably wont be able to quickly move the animal and you will be for want of another work stuck with the animal. These same groups however can be better to deal with for adoption, they tend to be less involved and dragged out (if they reply to the enquiry). They are also less likely to have several people meeting the same animal, so less chance of missing out once you have meet the animal and become more attached. Just very general guidelines I use myself when getting asked about rescue, there are no definate rules and very generalised -
Dog Thinks Cats Are Toys
chuckandsteve replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for advise. He lived happily with our old cat who hated him and stayed away from him, but since she passed he hurt a foster cat he tried to pick up (in his mouth) we decided no more cats. It was horrible searching the yard when he was covered in scratches, he must have gone back to play a few times to end up so bad. We just dont want to have to do it again. I might call and speak to a behaviourist, see if they think they can help
