  1. Council cant advertise the local obedience club because it creates problems with accusations of drumming up business for one business in their town - they can refer the owners to training but they cant tell them who the trainers are or similar because if they miss one they are the poo. Well that's annoying. Ours is not for profit, took us ages to find it and I have got so many people to join who previously haven't trained their dogs as they can't afford the expense of for profit training.
  2. I would like to see the council advertise the local obediance club. Its a cheap way for people to train their dog and also a way for people to learn not every dog is friendly even if yours is. I also think more education for kids about dog attacks would be great
  3. I have to agree with Megan here. I do the Mildura pound pick up, possibly the easiest pound for rescue to work with in Victoria. I have never ever left the pound without every small fluffy whatever while the Staffy Xs that have been there 2 months stay in there cages. This is the real downfall of rescue and while I know there are reasons for it, I think its what the extremists of no kill turn a blind eye to, because unless you are open door how can you claim you are no kill?? I thought the program was good but didn't go in depth enough, there are faults in boths rescue and pounds and they did a good job of pointing them out but didn't tell the general pubic what they can do to help.
  4. the fines are set by the state government. Well each local council does, sorry I confused 2 trains of thought, it was more 5 days for a microchipped desexed vacced registered dog to be released, can't tell you how much work I missed to get this dog out
  5. The point most of that money was given by people under the belief it would be used to save lives and they aren't doing it Look at Save A Dog they save almost all their dogs, and I don't believe they just luck out and get all amazing dogs while 55% of the lost dogs home were aggressive/so ill vet treatment wouldn't help Yes but not all shelters get to choose what dogs they take. Its easy for someone who only takes in small white fluffies which they temp test before they bring in to state they are no kill - huge difference to a pound that gets in dogs which they get no choice on. You cant seriously believe that all dogs should be or could be saved. Save a dog is a pound. Councils themselves use neighboring councils to compare performance So I don't see why you consider this an unfair comparison If you look at Knox council DAMP the year they changed to RSPCA the kill percent lept right up from when they used a small pound facility
  6. The other thing to consider is how difficult it is to get your dog back. One of my fosters got out the first day at her new home (long story how she got out) it took me 5 days and $650 dollars to get her out of the LDH. The reason they didnt want to release her..... She stared back at them when they looked her in the eyes!! It was $200 and something impound fee $200 and something dog at large and some other fine. Mainly because they found it annoying I went down there everyday to see if they had sorted out the paperwork yet. As apparently they have a dog attack a human every 2 hrs down there, so they don't have the time to release dogs

  8. I think most rescue groups in Victoria want them to do the work and rehouse the animals themselves. Currently there are 29 dogs available so not even 2 for each council it runs impounding facilities for
  9. When my husban and I went looking to get a dog I took him to the LDH north Melbourne. That's where my family's dogs came from but it had been 17 years since we last got a dog. There were 5 dogs there for adoption, the biggest pound in Victoria!!!! So none suited and I thought maybe we dont have the problem with strays like we use to and we thought we would get a puppy, thank dog I did more research. When the biggest kill facility in Victoria has 5 dogs for adoption you have to ask questions don't you? They have more than that now but only thanks to the constant pressure rescue groups are putting them under and it is still not enough. I don't think pounds are totally to blame but they are making millions pretending their goal is to rehome when it's not
  10. My foster has fear issues with other dogs. A thunder shirt has bought him down to a level were I can get some focus to work with him and he is very good at group class now. Off lead we haven't had a problem with other dogs but it has always been very controlled intros. He however really doesn't like off lead dogs when he is on lead so he was quite bad even with the thunder shirt. The thunder shirts work on about 80% of dogs so dont know if it would help you but for me, it has made his fear lower to a point I can work with
  11. Haha I do Mildura pound runs and I wrote on here once that I was going, and someone told the ranger a gay couple were coming to pick up the dogs I'm a girl. Chuck and Steve are my dogs
  12. Other owners really are the challenge for reactive dog owners. We ran into the MIL of the pug my staffy snapped at the other week. She proceeded to tell us about the Rottweiler that had attacked her DILs pug how it had the pugs entire head in its mouth and was shaking it but the pug was unhurt!?!?! Followed by both my husbands and my plank faces and my husband saying it was unbelievable a pug wouldn't have been hurt by that, she then said the pug was off lead and chasing said rottweiler but still wanted to find the Rottweiler. So I guess they still feel the should allow their pug to run free and attack other people's dogs. I guess I should have reported it to the council as how the story has changed from what actually happened.
  13. That varies but I was told 3 weeks and a dog should display their behavior problems after that it is assumed the problem is caused/learned by the current home. I would say a week isn't enough time for a dog to be assessed. But that's just my opinion
  14. Melbourne animal rescue Paw prints Homeless hounds All take kittens I don't know if any would be able to help, would have to call them
  15. Hollie Edwards has been helping with my foster dog. Only wish we had spoken to her sooner. She comes up if u google her and dog trainer. Would have saved us heaps of time if we spoke to her sooner with our pack as with foster we have 3.
  16. Thanks for all the ideas. I think we will stick with water just because I worry about the owners going off when I spray their dog. I also got a thunder shirt for him. OMG it does miricles. Stood only 1.5m away from dog next to us and my dog kept his focus 95% of the time even times when the other dog was barking and carrying on.
  17. I am not worried about the other dog hurting mine, I am worried about my dog hurting it, my dog is a staffy x lab so no pug will hurt him. We got rushed again today. (my luck at the moment) but I took a spray bottle and it took off, owner looked quite shocked when I asked him to control his dog and that I sprayed it with water. But oh well it worked
  18. I have been reading this thread as my current foster dog is reactive. He has been working with a trainer, he spent 2 weeks with her, with her dogs and was great she took him out and about and still great. His issues are fear related and more of an issue when he is on lead He is not too bad with us our major issue is he barks and carries on on his walks, he is a bit crazy at group training as there are dogs everywhere but he is improving. This reaction is more about him wanting to play but he was under socialised so he is rude/fearful when he gets up to them Anyway I had him out for training today, working on his heeling, taking a known route where I know which houses have dogs, he ignores dogs barking from their house/yard anyway, but then we had this pug appear, he was behind a bush so he was at our feet before I had anytime to do anything, He was aggressive, barking lunging at my dog who was actually ok for about 20 seconds as the women ran around us trying to grab him, as the pug weaved between my dogs legs. But then mine had had enough and snapped at him, got him on the ear and the pug started screaming, the lady started screaming, I grab my dog and pin him, he lets go, pug has no marks, lady was screaming at me to go away. Really this lady was telling me as she chased her dog, that it wasn't her dog it was her mother in laws and she didn't know why she had let it out etc. Thing is I know the mother in law (its 5 houses down) It was not her dog and the MILs dog has issues but is always under control. From those lies you have to assume she knew her dog was aggressive but just didn't care because it was small and she figured everyone elses dog would just take the behaviour, she really wasn't concerned at all until my dog bit hers never mind how many times her dog lunged at mine. So what do people do when this happens? I can't think of anything I could have done to prevent it, I have had dogs charge us before but i have had time to do something before the dog was actually on us.
  19. Husband got a staffy as when he meet one it ran up to him jumped on him and knocked him over.... He decided he must have one, so we got one from the pound. I just like a breed I can carry and cuddle so I got a bitza the staffy liked. Neither very thought out but worked out quite well. Since I am more mature I want a Scotty but we will only ever have rescues so they will be fosters we decide to keep, best way to find the right dog IMO
  20. I'd offer to either pay the bill or half the bill. Then work with them to make the fence more secure Not because i think you are in the wrong but to keep on side with the neighbours. So many stories of people baiting dogs, or doing whatever. If they are happy with you less likely to have to deal with complaints etc. I had a similar situation in the neighbours cat getting in my backyard and my staffy biting the cat. It was at 1am the cat should have been inside (our council has curfews) and obviously not in my yard. But we paid half just because we wanted to make sure she wasn't going to try and get even.....
  21. I bought mine from crazysales.com.au cheap but i have had that many foster dogs/cats in it and its still fine but a little dirty. Eta: they dont have them anymore but the ones on ebay r the same
  22. That's great!! Hopefully some of the small groups can get some backing
  23. She was a gorgeous dog, and the people adopting her were so nice. She is a lucky doggie
  24. thanks rural pug Yeah that's what we do. But with 2 ppl the second to run interference for the owners that say, but my dog is fine. It just wasn't very clear, that's why I asked the question.
  25. Thanks for the advice but not interested in getting into arguments about the group, his assessment etc so I might just leave it there
