Dog Bitten While In Boarding Kennel
chuckandsteve replied to Bisart Dobes's topic in General Dog Discussion
Totally. Absolute garbage on the part of the owner. He/she should be moving heaven and earth to find out what happened. Someone is not coming forward. I hope your friends take this further. Five days without treatment. Was the dog even fed???? No mention of trying to find out what happened at all. I am not sure what his owners are going to do - we bred the dog, I wouldn't be letting it rest at that and I certainly will be doing the opposite of recommending anyone to this kennel. At least 5 days without treatment - if I did this as a breeder I would be charged with cruelty - the same with them as owners - I can't believe that someone doesn't know what happened. Their vet is a very well known influential vet and they are disgusted as well. And the dog weighed 7 kilo's less when he came out of the kennel than when he went in. The vet wasn't impressed with that either - thats a big weight loss over a week. Word of mouth is a powerful tool. 7 kilos in a week and they didn't notice a bite mark. No one has looked at/feed glanced at this dog its entire stay. I'd be going to the RSPCA -
We aren't keen to report them, I worry then people will report us as a counter and I think things just go better without the council involved. I can also understand a dog getting away from you once it a blue moon. We had a complaint against him at the dog club because someone didn't like the look of him and felt threatened.... The dog club didn't care thankfully as I don't do weaves or anything and he has never gotten close enough to a dog to bite. He is also calm at training with the occassional lunge but other dogs do that too. But you never know with a ranger. We are down to one walking route, lol as trainer advised its best to not walk him where he has been rushed. It has been different dogs on all occassions, except a whippit twice. However always a dog I think he only needs one bite to hurt, hence the worry. Maybe I'll give it a go, if he doesn't hate it I guess there is no harm

So I have a failed foster doggie, I have spoken about him in the reactive thread before. He came from the pound his trainer says he had been badly abused and his issues stem from fear. With training we got him to a workable level, he would walk nicely past dogs on the other side of the rd just not nose to nose passes which was easy to avoid. He since got rushed and bitten by an off lead pug, he is a large Staffy cross so he wasn't hurt physically but we haven't had anywhere near the success training him since. We can walk him fine but we can't have him rushed by an off lead dog and expect him not to snap at it. So currently both my husband and I walk him, one holds him and the other tackles any off lead dog that approaches him, this has proved quite a frequent occurance. Husband is of the opinion bad luck for the other owner for not doing the right thing, but being a Staffy X in Victoria I think if anything ever went wrong, he would be blamed no matter how irresponsible the other person was. So I am thinking of muzzling him so I can walk him alone and have some sort of back up should something go wrong, add to this in a few months we will have a baby that will have to come walking with me as well. Do people think its fair on him to muzzle him? how do dogs react to being muzzled?

I am so sorry for you loss Cazstaff. No words are enough. Its such a great thing that in your time of need you are taking steps to prevent it happening to someone else. I dont think id be capable. It is certainly malpractice. I did a couple of volunteer days at a rescue groomer, when drying one dog I took 2 steps away and the groomer told me to stop and go back that while the dog was restrained he needed to be within reach

My vet charges $40 fir the heartworm test. If u dont treat regularly id have it checked

Do Vets Jack The Price Up For Insurance Claims?
chuckandsteve replied to Ellis's topic in General Dog Discussion
I got ripped off badly when we first got our dogs my vet now is so much better and so much cheaper. The first vet was smart and knew we knew nothing so played us, our dog had ringworm ( from the pound) i think he had 6 vet visits?!?!! Maybe if you tell us where she is someone can recomend somewhere else for 2nd opinion -
Yes, I thought so too, Alkhe. Unfortunately she was complaining about the Rescue Group's communication skills when her own were pretty poor. I read all replys wondering how ppl didnt understand she was talking about the delivery of the response not the no. I have passed on other groups details, admitting to both the potential adopter and group that i knew neither of them well. But both were happy for a potential adoption lead. I think groups need to consider that PR presents as 1 place, 1 group. So ppl lump all groups on there together so I think its important to offer a suggestion when saying no of where to look next.

Vet Recommendation - Ferntree Gully, Vic
chuckandsteve replied to goldielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Its more they were promoting getting a dog from Aca also. Its a huge vet, so i guess people worry money is coming first when they do that. There is good and bad though i know they have discounted rates for some rescues too. But my vet does that also so i just didnt go into it. Hence my only vague knowledge about them. -

I use bayswater vet on mountain hwy, and I love love love it. I have had 2 cats with cancer (he did laugh at how a 23 year old had come to get 2 old cats with pre existing cancer) and he talked me through all the options/costs what he thought best but no pressure. We had a dog fight, he stopped what he was doing right away (other customer said he could) looked at my dog and calmed me down, put dog under, fixed him up, kept him over night and checked on him 3 times during the night. He had drainage pipes in the wound and all Cost $250 and $30 follow up. Dog with clicky knee, he picked it up 4 years ago at yearly check up, dog didn't carry it or show any issues for 2 more years, he is only now needing it fixed and he has given us option of specialist vet $2700 or local non specialist but dones this proceedure quite often $800. We have had several fosters in with random issues what he has said straight up has always been right, even taken one to a specialist for 2nd opinion, 4 specialist visits later decides the problem is what my vet said. The vet isn't the warmest person, he is very nice but not gushy. (he told my husband once that he has at least one person a day come in in a crying hysteria so maybe thats why. Both hubby and I have done it, lol) -
Former foster now Mum's dog liked to walk underneath it around in circles. Took us a while but we think it was to scratch her back. Was quite funny as the tree spins as she does it. Unfortunatly it fell, she ran away and has never been near it again. (Aren't we mean laughing at her) So basically knock it over when they go near it and they wont go near it again. Though we did lose a few ornaments

Once the dog reacts they have breached the threshold and the exercise has gone too far. All you are doing is validating that reacting = scarey things go away = good (note to dog: React more! It gets results). You need more than a calm dog too. My boy is very calm with great manners, but it submissive and sensitive - not a good candidate to be put in the position of stooge dog. Yes your right, bad explanation. Though I will admit mine gets a bark in quicker than I can react sometimes.
-
I dont think that people are suggesting you walk your up to a dog who is reacting. But rather allowing them to come close whilst being calm, once the reactive dog reacts you end the exercise. Dogs lunge all the time in class and most people with reactive dogs will see this before it happens. Mine the ears go and thats it he is moved away. You need a calm dog and a non idiot handler to work with the reactive dog. Anything within reach should only be 3 seconds and then away. I wouldnt allow an off lead meet without a highly qualified trainer present

Article Not Good For Rescues
chuckandsteve replied to Greylvr's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
If you go into each application with an open mind, rather than treating applicants with cynicism, it's easier to gather the information and applicants tend not to feel uncomfortable. Though of course there are always some that feel uncomfortable completing an application form or answering questions, or that find yard checks intrusive etc, and they'll go somewhere else. It's not the full-time work as such, it's all the other things relevant for the dog's lifestyle - hours alone, other pets, exercise etc etc. Personally I prefer case by case based on these other factors, but if some rescue groups choose not to rehome dogs to full-time workers then that's entirely their perogative - their dog, their choice. I think thats hit the nail on the head, when rescue are closed minded toward adopters. A lot have also been in the game longer than they should have and or have no people skills. They are out right rude, like it or not the general public views rescue as a business of some sort and expect some sort of customer service. I find a lot of rescues have conflicting opinion there in that they see themselves as volunteers and adopters should bend to fit in with them. -

I'll be the bad person here, I gave up with rescue groups. Hubby wanted to just buy a puppy from a pet shop but I insisted the pound. We were 21 and engaged when we got our dogs and I guess that looked bad to people, though we did own our home and have substancial savings. I had only ever had the one dog who was 18 at the time and staying with my parents when I moved out. She was rarely walked, because she wasn't up for it (guess that looked bad) We didn't know anywhere near what we know now but we were willing to do whatever the group told us to, modify the house in anyway. We wanted 2 dogs one a Staffy so if the group had one to go with said Staffy that was fine. But we simply couldn't get one and couldn't identify a problem we could overcome. For example one was we didn't already own a dog. Anyway we got them both from a shelter. I don't recommend rescue groups to family or friends, I just ask what they want, pull from the pound myself and foster and then they decide if said dog suits them. I do pound transport for Mildura and know lots of lovely rescue people, but I just dont believe my friends and family (most who are well off and intelligent people) could get a dog from rescue. eta: I do believe rescues can do whatever they want to rehome their dogs, just shouldn't be upset/suprised when people go elsewhere -

Yeah thats my problem, no idea. Though OH mentioned the neighbour has a new dog, the other side of the house to which he lives though. His exercise routine has been a little less due to it being my busy month at work. But I'm not sure either of those will have had this effect. -

No I haven't tried LAT. I use the look command and make him have eye contact with me, but I might ask the trainer a bit about it as he should be having a session this weekend. I have always found it odd he is better at training than on his walks, but I put it down to to him being rushed and bitten by a pug one walk, and nothing bad has happened at trianing. Although 3 weeks ago they had us walk through the class 4 in off lead drop stays and one broke as we passed, that upset him but he didn't act out too much so maybe that was it. -
This exactly! I have a DA dog (fear based) and he gets no pleasure being too close to strange dogs. He loves to play with my other dogs and in no way is he missing out on anything because he can't socialise with random dogs. My dog isnt DA off lead, but i think teaching him to interact with other dogs is important as what if something goes wrong one day. He escapes the yard, i trip drop the lead?? If you have a DA dog you have to make sure these things don't happen. Most DA dogs can't be taught to interact in a friendly way, the training that is done to help the dog is about managing things so that interaction with other dogs is avoided and so that the DA dogs threshold is raised to cope with being able to be near other dogs. Actual interaction with other dogs isn't recommended for dogs that are DA. Too dangerous. Thats a nice thought but s**t happens. Thats like saying you must make sure your never in a car accident. Nice in theory but not possible. My dog has never got away from me, never escaped. How many times has he been charged by off lead dogs?? 7 in 1 year. So while preventing the situation is important so is getting yourself some level of calm to deal with the rest of the population. Yes shit happens. I guess it is like a car accident, if you choose to own a car with brake problems you are in serious trouble if that causes an accident. Same if your DA dog gets loose and hurts other dogs. But that isn't the point. The point is that socialisation doesn't help DA dogs. It can actually make them worse. So if you have a dog with problems professionals help. Don't take it near other dogs or try to socialise it yourself. So your advice is that all DA dogs deserve to be put down because you can't 100% avoid being rushed by other dogs?? or 75 things going wrong and dog escaping? In my sisters neighbourhood they actually had someone go around and release all the dogs from backyards how do you avoid that? I work with a professional trainer and her recommendation has been to socialise my dog. The more interaction he gets with other dogs the better he has become.

So my DA dog has been doing really well at obediance. He passed straight through begginers, class 1 and nearly class 2 first shot (they were iffy so I told them to fail him as I liked the class and he is there to get use to dogs not get in the obediance ring anyway). Until the last 2 weeks. He has just lost it started barking and carrying on. First week I thought he is just having a off week but then he did it again yesterday. I couldn't even get within 50 metres of the class and 3 weeks ago he was sitting in the middle of the pack with only about 2 barks the whole hour. I don't think it has been really aggressive just seems to be so excited. He has been worse on his walks too. He is always ultra alert and doesn't want to go down the streets that have dogs that bark from behind fences. He is going back to the private trainer but I wondered if anyone had any ideas in the mean time? -

I have a DA dog, its fear based and i dont think he can improve further without meet and greets. So i am going to take him to a trainer so practice. I let my other dogs, meet DA dogs when i am happy with the situation. I also clear out of the dog park with my little yapper so someone can let their husky play with my Staffy because the Husky doesnt like little dogs. But it is easier to be accomodating when u see both sides though

How Much Is Fair To Board A Pup For 2 Weeks
chuckandsteve replied to mini girl's topic in General Dog Discussion
If u asked me for $12 id give you more when i picked up the dog. So cheap especially for a pup, they are so much work.
