Dog Thinks Cats Are Toys
chuckandsteve replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yep he is being kept in at night now as is the cat. But he is home in the yard all day, and we can't leave him inside all the time as he is too active for that. I would really like to modify the behaviour, as if he ever escaped (not that I think he would the yard is very secure) I wouldn't want him attacking any cats. -
Hi, My Staffy is no good with cats.. he thinks they are toys and plays rough with them like he would other Staffys Simply solution is no cats, which is what we decided. Anyway the other morning I get up and find he has cat scratches all over him. Go out in the backyard and find an injured cat under some renovation stuff, luckily my other dog lend us straight there. Poor thing had to spend 2 days at the vet as he had been bitten on the bottom, and was in shock when we found him. The owner was actually very nice about it, we offered to help with vet bills etc which she refused. So now we are stuck as to how to prevent this happening again or worse. The cat obviously put up a good fight, due to the number of scratches on the dog which is good. Is there some sort of training that could help... given we dont own a cat? Or is there a way to fence the yard and make it cat proof? I have seen ways to keep cats in but not cats out

Hi I have been trying to get a dog out of the pound for 2 weeks now. Problem is she has the runs and can't be desexed Been to the vets and they sent her back to the pound with antibiotics, but they seem to have had no effect She is still a happy bouncy girl, any ideas what it could be??

Thanks. I just worked that out about the power. He is more active since we put him on EP and has lost weight... So we will switch him to natural. Hopefully it wont give him even more energy. We tried a few other premiums over the years but they all made him sick??? So thats why we landed on eagle pack. Thanks for suggestions
-
Hi We have just swapped our dogs onto eagle pack. one dog is a fatty so he is easy he goes on reduced fat The other is on the skinny side he is fine but my husband is worried. He is a Staffy and obsessed with the tennis ball So husband wants to put him on the power one. I think the orginal formula and then there is rice and lamb too Any opinions?

If I Died - Dog Retirement Villages?
chuckandsteve replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
The only thing I have requested in the event of my death is my dogs be taken care of. I know my parents will take them but if they couldn't I would be talking to a rescue group about massive donation in the event of my death to rehome my dogs as a pair 10k 20k I dont care I'm dead might as well keep my boys happy -
I would pick a dog over any animal ie 3rd dog over mini cow ( my number 2 animal) but I love all animals except fish and birds they are fine but I don't feel the need to hug them ;)

Cool I'll look it up and work on it with him, it really is at te minute if we do a good intro he is fine but I'd like it to improve. He won't be going to a home with kids either
-
Well last night I had my sister over she ignored him for like 10 minutes and then picked him up... he was ok but didnt look happy. Mother in law gave him a few pats then picked him up he nipped. He would still go to her for pats but if she patted under his front leg were she would picked him up he nipped. I picked him up later and he looked a bit annoyed so i am thinking it is that he doesnt want to be picked up, so anyone that meets him will be told visitors shouldnt pick him up. He has wirey hair so not really a need to be groomed dog but could be. I have no idea the breed he is quite strange looking We will work on intros with him and hopefully he improves
-
Yes they did the annual check so checked his legs etc It was at our house and he does bark at visitors when they arrive.
-
She decided she didn't want him which is good because I wasn't happy though husband was. He has been vet checked twice in the last week so he is in perfect health. At the minute I am putting it down to he doesn't like strangers to pick him up. Mother in law is coming over tonight so we can test him on her. Lucky he is 6kgs so if he does bite her she won't het too hurt. But depending what he does meeting her we will go from there

He is fine with everything I thought it might be she touched his paw and he didn't like it but he was fine anyway I touched his paws. He gets grumpy when my dogs jump on him or sit on him but that is fair enough as it is just a warning bark and the potential home he is the only dog. He was good at the dog park too. I handle him all the time and he is fine, but only my dad and husband have really picked him up everyone else has just patted him. He was marking in the house when I got him and he stopped but he marked again last night after meet and greet absolutely no other problems
-
Thanks I really thought I had every situation thrown at this dog and he had not shown any shying away until now but no one else has tried to pick him up as much. It might be he just doesn't want to be picked up by strangers but I have a week before possible trial so I might get more people to come over and try and pick him up and see how he goes

Hi, I just.got a foster. I checked his temperament in everyway I could think of. Took him to meet my mums incredibly dominant dog, he was good gave her a bark when she stood both front paws on his shoulder which is fair enough. He meet my nieces and nephew, didnt show any interest in them didnt mind them patting him. Has been good with all the people he meet. Although barked at my Mum when she let herself into my house. Anyway has a meet and greet with a potential owner. When she went to pick him up he would nip at her hands.... hasn't done this before and I pick him up all the time. He was happy for her to pat him while he was next to me and to take treats from her The lady still wants him, she thinks he will just take a bit to settle in with her. He is a 6kg dog needs short walks and likes his cuddles and she is older single and lives alone so I thought they would be a really good match. However the nipping has worried me. Husband thinks he just doesn't trust her yet so didnt want her picking him up, the dog should go on trial and if she still has problems she can just bring him back. Any opinions?

Why Is Aus Becoming So Non Dog Friendly
chuckandsteve replied to Inevitablue's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think a major problem is that dog training is so incredibly expensive here. 1 on 1 training I understand is expensive but group training I think should be a lot cheaper than it is. $40 a lesson is crazy expensive and out of reach of a lot of people including myself. We are lucky enough to find a trainer that would give us a private lesson with our 2 dogs for $30 and we went to the Knox dog club at $80 a year for 2 people. But otherwise it would have been all on our own -
Thanks for your thoughts. She had been quite unwell in the lead up to this she had skin cancer and was due to get her nose removed the following week which is why we thought the fight might have been too much for her. They were seperated probably 95% of the time when we were out so if we had another one we most certainly would seperate 100% of the time. Our dog has been very stressed since she died which is another reason I am considering another cat. We foster so it would be a foster we have that suits the dogs and the life style

We lost our cat recently in very sad strange way. She was 15 It was the Friday we had the massive rain storm in Melbourne. We were going out so my husband decided instead of locking the dogs out he would leave them in. Anyway when we got home there was cat fur in the front driveway all down our hallway and our cats bed had been peed on. We found her on our back decking passed away. I think she must have been attacked by a neighbors male cat that is undesexed and followed into the house and sits inthe front yard. Later the same night he came up howling at our door. However she has saliva on her obviously from the dog. No bite marks just saliva so we can't rule out the dog being involved. Some time has passed and think eventually I would like another cat. My husband thinks we should never have another one too big a risk. Our dog has never shown any aggression before and obviously I would never leave him with another cat unsupervised. Do you think another cat is out of the question?

Pets Haven in Woodend (about 40 min up the calder) is a good place to start, you can just head up one weekend and spend the day there and help out without commiting so you can get a taste of it. If you join them on facebook you can read about what they are doing and email the volunteer coordinator and foster coordinator, also if it doesn't work out fostering you can take them straight back. Animal Aid in coldstream is good too everything is a bit more official you need to go to a volunteers day before you start and you get given a "shift" in whatever area you want to work in. Fostering only there is a huge amount of options and I'm sure you could find a group to fit your needs. Hopefully all wouldtake the animal back straight away if you have problems

Argh...what Would You Do?--update :d
chuckandsteve replied to Brennan's Mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
If she is house proud, tell her her house is going to stink cause it is. The Mum I had bleed for the 8 weeks. Just a little bit and you never knew when but all of a sudden blood on my walls. One puppy I had could poo on walls, it looked just like poo on the floor but on the wall..... the litter I just had decided they like to sleep on newspaper and poo on their bed, which led to an incredible amount of cleaning and the owning of a huge number of beds. Some were also food agressive so 3 had to be feed on their own which meant 4 feeding times 3 times a day. -
I dont think our heated bed worked either. but my boys wont sit on it... and my electric blanket only gets hot when the donna is on so haven't complained either
-
I got the small one last time they had them. My 8kg dog fits in it/2 cats fit in it and I have put a litter of 5 8 week old pups in it if that helps. I love it really good quality
-
My boys are due for their vaccination in a week or 2. Should they be receiving them annually or every 3 years? I have had them for 2 years so they have had 2 rounds as far as we know

My friend got told her dogs teeth have plaque and need a clean and was quoted $500. I know they have to be asleep but is that too much?
