Well I Didn't Think Of That One!
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to CrazyCresties's topic in General Dog Discussion
This thread is almost as funny/scary as the roomba fails. -
You can like Casey Council on facebook - they put the story up there https://www.facebook.com/CityOfCasey I think it's more than just being unregsitered ie that would be 1 count out of 115. So it's probably 114 counts of animal cruelty - one for each critter on the site.

I think I might have hit the accellerator instead of stop. A stopped platform is much easier to poop on than a moving one. -
Are they a registered charity? Otherwise the tax office might like to know about the gap between purchase price and adoption fee - are they charging GST? Are they paying GST or income tax on their profit? If they're running at a profit - the tax office will want to know. And charities have to be accountable to get tax exemptions. Ie they still have to put returns in.

The pet pr o te ct or website says only 95% effective. If you go through all the fine print - says it is only 95% effective against ticks - which might be acceptable in a bush tick area but not in a paralysis tick area. A lot of dogs can avoid fleas at least by good management and lack of exposure to hosts - ie only hanging out with flealess dogs, and flealess cats. Ie not likely to get fleas at an agility competition where every dog is well cared for, and are likely to in areas where people don't spend money on flea treatments or prevention for their dogs, or don't even notice when their dogs get them. And their scientific studies have sample sizes - last time I looked it was 40 dogs - that are way too small to be conclusive. So I would not rely on it. From a vague understanding of basic biology - I can't see how they'd be any different to the metal tag that many dogs wear with their owner's phone number. As for the "ultra sonic" things - I got talked into buying one of the mozzie repellant ones - it's supposed to make noises too high for the human ear to hear. Ok - I must be not-human cos I can hear it singing away. And I've watched mozzies fly in and suck my blood within ear shot of the things. So those particular things along with the zapper thing that is supposed to reduce the sting - do not work on me or my dog (didn't try the sting zapper on the dog). At all. But I am the person in the crowd that all mozzies with choose first over anybody else. Personally I think the PP is about the same as those super wrist bands worth $2 that were being sold for $60each a few years ago until they got banned for making false "health claims". Ie they were no different from placebo wrist bands.

I'd have to get pay pal too. Sigh. They (Dr Fostersmith) said send an email - so I did. Hopefully they will get back to me with a plan. And I won't need a paypal account just yet. I'm currently spawning new bank accounts at the rate of three a month just to get better interest and cheaper prices on stuff - and it sucks.

Dammit totally enabling site but I can't get it to let me choose an Australian State for shipping address www.drsfostersmith.com They have the kong zoom grooms at great price too.

Showing Dogs With Scars/disfigurement.
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Blackdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
They have neuter classes now. So all you have to do is sort the testicles once and for all, and then you could show. -
I was already paranoid about pools and pool covers... just going to be worse now.

Thanks everyone. The weekend started so well and then went to hell.

news story... I only hope that someone decides that pool fencing should come first when it comes to renovations or rebuilds after fires or whatever - my poor brother couldn't talk properly, he was that upset. I think I'm still in denial / avoidance. It could have been a toddler. So maybe a teensy bit angry as well as sad/avoiding/denial. I hate rainbow bridge posts. Sigh. Maybe I'm way too soft.

Don't Blame The Dog - Missed Out :-(((
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to GSDowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
@ash1 I did find it a bit shocking too (and the first ep with the cat). But the dogs actually overheat and die if they're run when it's warm too like over 40'F which is only just above freezing (32'F). So they do seem to be warm enough. I don't know if they keep them like that in winter. I would think not - because the snow falls would cover the kennels and suffocate them. I also feel a bit uncomfortable when I visit my cousins farms and see all their dogs on long chains next to dirt floored kennels with dog poop everywhere, even though they get off for a run twice a day and any time something needs rounding up. But my cousins think dog runs are more cruel. They have those only for when bitches are in heat or whelping. It is interesting to see all the different attitudes to keeping dogs and training them. But in all the episodes I never saw a dog being clobberd for misbehaving. Or even yelled at. Some of the bad dog owners got yelled at, but not the dogs. Ie don't blame the dog. -
Frosty did it at the beach one time. She was only about 4 months old - so clearly a puppy - people still mistake her for a puppy. She went bolting up to this woman who was holding a baby and had a toddler at her feet - I was panicking - recall what recall? I thought she'd come when the kelpie she was playing with came back but that didn't have recall either. Anyway about 5m out she dropped to a crawl and 2m out - rolled over - paws up. Which cracked all of us up. Huge relief all round. I did go put her back on lead after that. Sigh.

My brother's SBT drowned today. It's a bit of a shock as she was with us and enthusiastic about life, bones, digging in the garden at a family dinner only yesterday evening. She was about 11 yo. Going a bit deaf and stiff but still had plenty of time yet. My brother went to visit friends who were in the middle of renovations but the thing they left till last was the pool fence. All the regular children that visit can swim, but the dog cannot. She went through the pool cover - so even tho my brother looked under there, he couldn't see her. Unfenced pools and pool covers and dogs that swim like lead balloons. ARGH. There are so many horrible ways to lose a dog. Mine could die because she likes to play with snakes, eats broken glass, would probably eat ratsack and my mum puts it out at her place, and she likes to chase joggers and bicycles. Mostly she remembers not to - but every now and again - forgets herself.

Frosty does the belly crawl so much she gets a rash. Sometimes she does it cos it feels good. There's no other dogs around and I spring her half way through a crawl. I won't accept any invite component unless she does it on the beach towel I put out so she doesn't have to crawl on the grass. She does it for people she likes - and when she arrives - she rolls over for a belly rub. Just wonderful when she was crawling on wet sand or mud. She doesn't notice/care what surface she's on much. She also does it to greet in the most friendly non threatening way - other dogs in the park - no matter how big, small, old, young they are. She's corrupted a few puppies into doing the same thing. And it's hysterical when she meets a keplie or kelpie x - because they're both competeing to see who can grovel the most. Ie it goes beyond belly crawl - to rubbing head and cheek along the ground too.

Are you sure Westiemum? The back seat buddies there (for landcruiser sized car) are $300+ and the other ones are not any better than what I already have.

Steep Jump In My Pet Insurance.
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to smooch's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't pay by direct debit and I pay a years worth in one hit. from the first year insured to the second - the premium went up by about 60% ie more than half again on top of before, and the pay out reduced (down to 80%). And then I noticed they only pay out on half of anything she has two of. And they tried to dud my brother who had the sense to ring them before he booked his dog in for 6 lumpectomies in one op to see how much they would pay. Girl on phone said 80% - so he got the op done, and when he claimed they were trying to tell him that the 5 lumps after the first one came off (in the same op) were "pre-existing" and they wouldn't pay on those. WTF. He got them to listen to their own recording and got more money out of them but it still wasn't 80%. There's basically two pet insurance companies. Ho llar ds (aka backed by Holla r ds) and All ia nz. At least Hollards pay what they say they will. I'd had bad experience with the Big A and my car insurance. I'm not game to risk them with anything else. Anyway this year the renewal came in and the premium increase was pretty much CPI. I haven't claimed on pet insurance tho at the rate she's going - I will. She upchucked a piece of beer stubbie yesterday. Sheesh. If the premium had gone up much more, I would have self insured, I've got the spare cash in case - so not sure why I'm bothering with the rather outrageous pet insurance. -

This is the NSW code of ethics for dog breeders. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/livestock/animal-welfare/codes/breeding-dogs-and-cats To me - it would be great if the "puppy farmers" complied - but some of it looks a bit strange if you try to apply it to someone's house if the dogs live there when they're breeding. As long as the house is clean and not like the animal hoarder show - I guess it should pass. -

well the stitching in the chew guard dragon's bum has been neatly opened up like Azaria's jump suit and the squeaker no longer works. Sigh. The rest of it seems fine. -
Stopped A Dog Attack This Morning...
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Ruin Maniac's topic in General Dog Discussion
HugL I think in NSW it's mandatory for emergency services to make a report to the LGA anyone who comes in with dog bite injuries. And they may also make a report to police - depending what the injured person (or their parent) wants. I think this is mostly so they have more accurate stats on what is biting who and vaguely why. The 10 ten biting dogs - are not exactly what you'd expect. In SA - you can report all dog bites to the council which has jurisdiction over the land in which it happened, but you might have a hard time doing it at the actual time of attack - if it happens on the weekend or after hours - because there's nobody to take the report. But you can still report it. It really helps if you get the dog's rego number and address because it's hard for them to follow up if they can't identify or find the dog. But if it's injured a human they make more of an effort. Also if the dog attacks a human - call the police as well as the ambulance. That would probably work better than calling the council at the time of the incident. I don't know if it is mandatory for the emergency services/hospital to report dog bites or not to LGA or police. It is supposedly mandatory to report any car accident with an animal where the animal is injured (or an insurance claim is likely) but this can be difficult too if the animal nicks off or the owner prevents you getting id info. But I haven't actually looked that one up, I just got told by someone else. If the dog bite happens on private property - you can still report it to the council which collects the rates on that property. Just because it's on private property - does not mean the dog act does not apply - it's just slightly different in application eg if the dog bites someone who is there without permission (eg trespasser or burglar) the dog and owner are not up for any fines (tho the burglar might still sue for medical costs - house insurance might cover - at least they can afford a decent laywer). But if the dog injures someone who is there with permission eg the child of the house, or knocks over a visiting ancient relly and breaks their hip in the fall, or bites the meter reader or policeman with a warrant / invited in, etc - then the house holder is liable and all the bad bits of the dog act apply. Ie depending how bad things are - dog can be declared dangerous (required to be securely caged or muzzled at all times), or PTS. But for the law to be applied - the police / council need evidence. If nobody tells them - it didn't happen (no evidence). And that would be why they're having so much trouble convicting anyone from the bi ke gan gs for attacking each other. -
Hmm - that looks like the one I know. I wonder if $240 is cheaper than getting one custom made?

Where's Bully when you need her. Pele got a foot crushed in an accident - she has won conformation shows since. She's not obviously lame but she is obviously a bit not quite right in the foot. So you can. -
I've got one I bought from a well known crate supplier - but it doesn't quite fit in the land cruiser, the head rests straps are not in the right place to fit neatly, and it folds in on the corners and it's a very dark colour which makes the car hotter inside than it needs to be. So I'm looking for one with white (for coolness) topping and maybe thinking of getting one of the horse rug places to custom make one out of white rip stop with slits in the right places for the harness strap. And then putting cheap white bath sheet towels on top of that. a friend has a car hammock with white fake sheep fleece on it which looks comfy tho it still has a dark blue backing (hot). They certainly are great things to have. But avoid dark colours if you can.

I have occasionally used sports drinks like staminade sports for meal replacements - ie theres a lot of sugar (calories) in it as well as electrolytes. But I'm not sure that's suitable for a dog in recovery. Some body builders use some sort of protein based "shake" too. That might be better for a dog. Maybe the vet could advise.

Don't Blame The Dog - Missed Out :-(((
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to GSDowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
Somebody I know got them off the bbc site. They might be available there. I thought it odd - in an earlier episode - they had a bloke with amstaff / big bully looking dogs - and he was back yard breeding and letting his dogs walk down the high street (local shops) off lead scaring the crap out of people with kids in prams... cos he's a good dog and wouldn't bite anyone - and yet one of his previous dogs - had been killed in a car accident and his "good dog" did run out into the traffic too - just lucky he wasn't hit. And how would the parent of the kid in pram - know if his dog was a good dog or not? Anyway that bloke got send to lost dogs home in melbourne to pick up crap and train pound dogs so they would have a better chance of finding a home. And he had no idea that's where a number of his puppies would end up. And the Lost Dogs manager also showed him the morgue full of bags of car accident dogs. Cos they get those too. Made the tuff guy cry. He had his dog on lead after that. And he hadn't been breeding since either. Was a whole lot more thoughtful about where those puppies were - because he couldn't imagine abandoning his dogs so he had no idea other people did regularily. And then the sled dog loser - was letting his boofy dog walk off lead. And nobody said anything. WTF.
