What Do You Store Your Photos On?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to pesh's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I gotta love work back up systems... Once place I went to - I was asked to check the system was backing up properly and when they finally gave me access so I could see what was being backed up - the only folder that was backed up - was the home folder of the guy who set up the backup system. Oops. His response was "I don't see a problem with that". Another place - they thought they were running backups. They were not. They had filled up the space available so the backup was terminating with an out of space error. Nobody was checking. Another place - major hospital - I got told when I asked them to retrieve a folder that some user had mistakenly deleted - and that trashed one of their accounting systems - that they'd have to shut the whole system down for three days - to retrieve one folder. That was when they went to NT. When they had a network using "novell" you could go into the network trash bin and get that kind of stuff back out, took an hour maybe - to find the tech to do it. Sigh. -
if you put the following into google... scam site:www.dolforums.com.au you get a good list of what's been discussed before. and there is a good description of scams in general here. http://www.dogzonline.com.au/ If you get a bunch of vague excuses why you can't meet up, and they want cash up front - for something you can't look at, via western union or any other method it would be hard to retrieve, then don't.

What Do You Store Your Photos On?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to pesh's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I have two external hard drives - because they can die too. Some of my older photos are on CD and DVD. I copied those on to the hard drives - I organise stuff as much as I can be bothered, and I back all the photos and stuff on to the second hard drive, and store them in two different places. If you're shopping, get one with USB3.0 or fast connections / data transfer speeds. There are also things called NAS - or something about network something storage - which is like having a separate computer that just does file storage, usually in something called a "RAID" config which is two hard drives that mirror each other (have the same stuff) so like a back up if one hard drive fails. Tho I read one sad story where the data disappeared off one hard drive, and the other one became a mirror of the missing data. That would suck. Organising is fun. You have to think about what you would be looking for when you want a particular photo and store the pictures with that name. I'm not all that keen on databases - because you get a new computer, and new operating system and the jpgs can come too but not the database software - frustrating much. Still thinking about that one too. I store by context eg family and then by year and event... and I'm starting folders for my fave pix. And also folders for each family member or group. Ie my mum's family is usually separate to my dad's family. But not always. And mostly but not always - they're separate to my hockey friends... etc. I'm pretty good at remembering when something happened, or if it happened before or after something else, so that's a good way to organise for me. And also who I was with, or what event so that helps too. Naming the folders stuff like CD01 CD02 - not very helpful. Neither is naming the folders after the camera. A lot of sorting and fixing up there. -

6 Month Old Staffy Be Aggressive Towards Pup
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to staffy2's topic in Puppy Chat
Trainers, what about inlinek9 - they go out to Ballarat and are on the same side of Vic as Shepparton http://inlinek9.webs.com/ I'm a bit worried about the word "correct" and not "stop" ie if this was happening to me, I'd stop the older dog but I wouldn't scold her or apply any harsh punishment. Yelling can seem like you're joining in, and the puppy might get blamed and attacked more. Definitely keep them separated until you have a training plan that is working. -
I agree with Ruby Blue You have friends all over Australia willing to go check out the puppy for you... so where ever he says he is, you say you have a friend there who will pick up the puppy for you with the money... save on transport costs, because (sob) your last puppy died on the plane trip. Although that will give him ideas for scamming the next person. But beware of actually meeting up, people get killed doing that. Especially if they go all the way to Africa to do it. There are much better ways to get a puppy. Given that he is probably overseas (any chance of posting the email headers in here - we can check or you can use http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/ to have a search ) then you have all the problems and costs with Quarantine. string him along or just don't reply any more. But don't send any money. ps if you search for "scam the scammers" a report comes up of a dodgy Brisbane woman who scammed the Nigerians and some hapless wanna be car buyers out of $30K. She got done for defrauding the buyers. So the Nigerians are starting to hire local agents to help with their scams. It must be quite an enterprise - how to end poverty in Africa?

To go with "Maybe" you could name the next dog "guess". We could start a thread with favourite names for dogs... sure it's been done but... I always wondered why Makybe sounded so familiar. So to go with Maybe - you could also have "Diva" especially if it's a fast bitch.

I recently unliked a facebook page that I thought could be quite informative ie about some of the dodgy law suits Monsanto have started. But when every second post from them was about some flim flam unscientific mumbo jumbo popular with con artists - I unfriended them. Frustrating much. My usual response to the extreme PETA types is that the best thing for this planet - based on their philosophy - would be no humans. Starting with them. Is that what they're really asking for? Personally, I seek a balance somewhere between living the good life and not wasting the planet's resources faster than they can be replaced.

I just love how the url for the government scam watch is www.fido.gov.au which sends you to here https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/scams/avoiding-scams/tricks-used-in-scams That page has a place to report scams. And this one too. Puppy scam specific page. http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/718448 Scams - don't just appeal to the greedy any more. There's a heap that try to get your charity money or guilt trip you or romance you. Anything you're willing to part with money for - someone will try to scam you for it. There has been a lot of scam the scammer fun out there on the net, and a couple of people have been killed - trying to get back at the Nigerian scammers. Nigerian scammers - have really bad English. Their sentence construction is weird for starters. And their choice of words from dictionary translaters is often inappropriate and quite funny - if you're not sucked in. It's not the same as a "foreign accent" belonging to someone from non English speaking background living in an English speaking country. So weird English by itself is not the sign of a scammer, but when it's part of a 20 point system including prices too good to be true and inconsistent information about what the puppies are and where they are... PS here is the same email from 2007 http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12563

Based on what I know of Shakespeare's sense of humour, I'm willing to bet that Puck rhymes with Fire Truck was / is no co-incidence. It's a really old word. I don't use my dog's name as her primary recall word. It's more to get her attention. I know a dog and handler team - whose names match the name of a popular tv show - but the dog had the name before it got the home with the handler and she didn't change it. I don't like it when dogs have popular human names. And it gets confusing. It's very weird now that there are a lot of children now with the names that used to be very popular dog names. And dogs get named after beer. Why not wine?

I used to have a hoover front loader, after about 20 years the bottom rusted out of it, sigh. I got an Asko front loader - cos I thought I couldn't afford a Miele. Not happy at all. The asko powder dispensing bit - has rusted along the front and I've stickytaped it up to stop it from including bits of rust in the wash. It doesn't do a good job of getting dog hair off anything - tho I tried a Shannon Lush trick this last time - put some nylon pantihose loose in with the load and that seemed to work. Not 100% sure yet. Have to try some tracky dacks with dog bedding and see. It has killed two of my fav underwire bras (that were inside stocking wash bags), and made a big scrape in the door - on the fastest spin speed, so now I wash on 800 rev spin speed, and pull the bras out and then put it on the fast spin. The fast spin speed does not seem to be as dry as the Hoover 800 rev spin was. Something is not right about that. And it doesn't get things as clean as the hoover did. It does use much less water. And it takes 1 hour and 20 minutes to do a normal cycle on cold water, longer if you want to use warm or hot water - cos it heats its own water with electricity. The door is really hard to shut. It's also not intuitive to open if you shut it and want to add something (before you start the wash). The bit where you clean the buttons out, is really difficult to access, and the extra sand trap at the bottom cannot be accessed without flooding the floor even tho you told it to drain all the water out. The way the fitting is - you cannot catch the water with anything but a large towel. Not a great design. Spin cycle is noisy. Next time - I'm getting a Miele.

National Bi-weekly Companion Animals News Paper
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to moosmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think I'd listen to a pet focussed podcast. And skip the stuff about cats and budgies. But I'm not sure if people who don't look for the information would be helped. For example - the rules about dogs on lead on the footpath - is printed on our dog registration renewal forms, along with some of the other dog rules - I think I might be the only person in the state who has read it. Our council newsletter and our residents association newsletter always include stuff about parking rules - a significant number of residents have no idea they can't park on verges or leave less than 3m gaps to the car on the other side of the road. council newsletter also contains stuff about rubbish collection and recycling - and yet I still see TVs on the curbs when we have places that recycle for free, and failing that - council will pick it up if you tell them. And I still see plastic bags sticking out of over stuffed recycling bins. ARRGGHH. So we could have a newsletter but I suspect we'd be preaching to the choir (an Easter link). I'd read it but my neighbours who don't know about the 2m leash rule - wouldn't. -
My 11 week old puppy routine was more like... 6:30am out for potty 7:30am short walk maybe 10 - 15 minutes (5 minutes per month of age) 8:00am breakfast (kibble soaked in water until it's swollen up) after breakfast - another potty break. probably a lot of sleeping, boss toe chewing, playing with chew toys 10am - potty break (if we haven't had one recently) 12noon - potty break 12:30pm lunch (more kibble soaked in water) post lunch potty break more sleeping... potty breaks every 2 hours or more often if needed 6:30pm dinner 6:45pm another potty break and maybe another short walk 8:45pm potty break 10:30pm potty break then bed time for dogs (and their owners) dog has lead attached to far side of owner's bed and under owner so dog cannot nick off and potty somewhere undesirable. 1am potty break (no fun, no talking, just potty) 3:30am potty break (as above) 6:30am - repeat... I gradually spread the night time potty breaks further apart, but if the puppy got up, we were outside immediately. Especially if she got a bit desperate and started swatting me on the head with her paw. She slept next to my bed. She spent some time in a crate if I had to go out during the day. So I was aiming for 2 hourly potty breaks, after waking, after eating, before and after play, or any time her nose went near the floor (especially if it was behind furniture). I don't remember any behaviour changes specifically but I do get "devil dog" similar to what you describe when she needs a potty break. Even now she's 4.5 years old. Does not pay to ignore or scold this. Just take your puppy outside (or wherever you toilet him). QUICK. You may want to consult with your puppy's breeder to find out what the routine was before you got the puppy. Good breeders will have something that resembles house training and maybe crate training and some good manners training before you get to take the puppy home, so knowing what this is may help. And my brother's kids are a real nightmare if they get over tired. I think 12am is a very late bed time, and puppy might be over tired. And 10:30am is a bit late for getting up too.

Animal Welfare To Monitor Farms With Drone
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to mixeduppup's topic in In The News
Too bad if the animals (eg horses) freak out at the bizarre sight and sound and kill themselves on the nearest fence. I know of a horse that broke its back trying to get away from a hot air balloon and my dog hates large flying things overhead - from crows, kites and model airplanes - tho she's better with the planes these days. Gets a lot of practice at a safe distance from a glider club. But 10m would be way too close for her to contain herself. -
Do You Think It Would Be Illegal In Australia?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Kirislin's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I think that's how they used to get animal wildlife shots eg tiger catches goat, goat clearly tethered. Not fun watching for me. I don't like watching the gnu get caught by the crocodile either. -
Retractable Leads - A Menace ?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to DakotaJ's topic in General Dog Discussion
50kg breaking strain seems like a lot, but this means it could hold 50kg of dog - standing still. What happens when the dog running at 20km/h gets to the end? 20km/h is 5m/s = 25* dog weight breaking strain is what you need if you stop the dog inside 1m. And that would be why these things snap with 10kg dogs running to the end of them. Personally I've been burnt and had welts from the things wrapping around my fingers and leg trying to keep the dog with the retractable lead from tangling mine. Now I just stay well away from dogs I don't know with these. -
Strong Mythical names Loki - mischief Zeus Apollo Atlas (carries the world on his shoulders) Hunter I don't get why Odin goes with Isis - one is Nordic and one is Egyptian. Horus (is Egyptian too) but some of those gods were nasty. Old man names Fred My friend likes naming dogs after weather phenonena like Misty Frosty Snowy Smokey Stormy I was thinking naming Whippets after fast runners might be fun. Freeman Bolt or Usain or his friend Johan or Asafa Powell visiting for the Stawell gift this weekend. http://www.stawellgift.com/hall-of-fame/legends/ Theres some good names (first or last) on that website. There's a lab breeder in Adelaide that has been naming her puppies after vacuum cleaners. Eg Dyson, Hoover, Nilfisk...

I used to think this. I think now, they're a lot more persistant in attempts to train their owners. Slower to get the premack concept of do something for the boss then I get to do something I want. Well Border collies will set their boss up, but the Airedale just keep pulling and pulling for what they want. Airedales don't get off lead much. I know one welsh terrier - which got off lead but would not come back - but could be caught if you told him there was a possum up this tree.

Human Hormone Replacement And Dogs
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to oakway's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I knew there was some reason I put the stuff under my shirt before I went to sleep at night. The cream I was on - was crap tho - caused more problems than it sorted, so I stopped using it. Expensive too - no PBS for what I was on. But I've heard horror stories about getting the cream anywhere it's not supposed to be - so I used to apply it with gloves on and be really careful about washing my hands. Mostly I didn't want it on my face or hands or anywhere near the dog or anyone or anything else I touched. Same deal with patches - eg there's one you can get for seasickness when you're over seas - and if you put the patch on and then touch anywhere near your eye (wipe sleep from eye for example) - you end up blind and dizzy for several hours/days until it wears off (and then you're sea sick again). And just while we're on medicine doses - do not take your medication with anything really acid like pineapple juice or lime juice. Cos there is something in that which can make some medicines up to 60x more potent than they're meant to be. -
Your Fave Training Vid/ Trainer To Watch
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I like kikopup and susan garrett - tho there's not so many of her training videos on youtube. And I like Ian Dunbar. And I like Mary Ray - but more as inspiration for what I could train vs how to train it. -
You could try teaching your dog to poop on lead. Mine will do a single pile if she's feeling safe and secure eg under the lemon tree. But if she's out in the open with birds flying overhead or other dogs running around - she leaves a trail... Putting her on lead limits her opportunity to go for an extended walk. But lots of dogs do multi deposit on a long trail.

Hi all Just a quick question, I'm taking my dog through tick country - Adelaide to QLD via Canberra, Sydney and Newcastle and maybe a few other places. Last time - I fed her proban tablets - and we didn't get any ticks but I think that may have been luck more than anything. Either that or ticks don't like being immersed in water much - cos we did a lot of swimming too. This time - I still have some proban left. I was thinking of buying some permoxin spray - that says it covers for about 2 weeks - tho I suppose need to reapply if dog gets wet? Or not? And using advantix. But I'm currently using revolution - for heartworm and fleas and etc. would revolution + permoxin be enough? Or would putting all the other stuff on too - be overkill eg advantix and proban?

I think they've changed the law in SA to exclude this - as long as the burglar broke the glass ie that you have not booby trapped the place and a fireman or policeman trying to help might get hurt. It would be a PITA to have to go to court to deal with it tho. Meantime - prisoners here sue if they get injured in normal prison day to day life - a bit like workers comp. Ie if they slip and fall over on a wet floor or something. Sigh. I read some of them spend a lot of time reading law books cos they haven't much else to do. I think they may also have changed the law about shooting people who break into your home, because two pensioners were let off by the juries - when they shot the burglars who had been (repeatedly) breaking in. Two separate cases of this about 15 years ago.
