Pirate Are you coming up for the SG thing? I was up in Feb and going again this November. Major hazards - snakes, cane toads, fruit bats (Hendra virus). My dog did not get off lead except when doing drills, and a little bit at my cousin's place (Brookfield - enormous house blocks). But Cousin's place had a creek, cane toads, bats and snakes and probably ticks tho she also had chooks and a JRT and a cat which all survived with minimal attention. Evil hound got twice daily tick checks. I put her on proban (tablets) but you can't get these any more. And she didn't seem all that interested in the cane toads despite nearly stepping on one. The bats were another story. She hates crows and other large flying birds, and as far as she was concerned, the bats were night crows. We mostly stuck to concrete paths, and short frequently mowed grass and stayed on lead. Mozzies and ants were a hazard at Chewar - I used talcum powder to deter the ants. And aeroguard for the flies. You can get battery operated fan with soft blades to put in the dog crate - I had two of these. And a garden sprayer for me. And a hat, and a cabana - if you're doing the second week you can share mine especially if you help set it up - I didn't like to leave it up over night - seen them smashed that way tho feb was good. I'm thinking about getting an ice jacket or cool jacket for me because I really don't handle the heat well. Never mind the dog.

Double wow. I feel like where I live is so backwards... "community justice centre" sounds so sensible... -
Neighbor Complaining About Barking..
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to charli73's topic in General Dog Discussion
charli73 I was going to suggest going for a walk around your neighbourhood and telling them to let you know directly if they have any problem with your dog. I have a neighbour across the road who hates barking dogs but he's met mine and me and he's never complained about her. And she does bark some. When I'm out she stays inside. That's me being paranoid plus there is no proper shelter for her in the back yard. There's quite a few nutters in my burb who have complained about the barking of dogs that are not actually there at all. Some of the nearby dog owners keep a log of when they're home, when they're not and where their dogs are. And council checks (eventually) and are quite good at picking the nutters from the serious complaints. One nutter actually goes and yells at his neighbour's dogs and then complains when they bark. If anything, he's training them to bark more. All I can suggest now is keep in touch with your council and where they're at with it. If they think the person is a nutter, you're pretty safe. If they think you need to do something they will let you know in writing. Meanwhile - I keep my dog inside when I'm out. As it's much worse - legally - for someone to break into your house to get at your dog than it is for them to chuck something bad over your back fence. And (the Victorian) council can't come into your house without your permission either, but they can go in your back yard. I think the council rules and local government acts vary from place to place. I've never heard of "mediation" for dog barking or anything else. -
Because I Am Out Of The Loop

I like front attach harness and flat collar and depending what I was training, I might use a head halter for a short period of time. But the sled dog harness and the front attach harness have two completely different ways of working. -
Trimming Feet On Ckc's?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to HugUrPup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think I'd ask the owner. And explain their options and why you do your dog's feet the way you do. There's heaps of pictures on google for cocker spaniel clips both pet and show clips. Some groomers have an album of photos of before and after pictures so customers could see what you mean. If I knew long fur around the feet was going to mean mud puddles in the house, they'd be getting lab paws. Some of the clips look like the feet get "hemmed" like you hem jeans - so the fur sits clear of the ground. -
Dogs May Have To Stand Aside For New Agility Competitor!
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
I thought it was the living room but I could have been wrong. Or do you mean someone did do brace with a rabbit and a whippet? -
What Nekhbet said. We used to sponge some of our dogs down with a malathion solution to stop the mites. It stunk. But if they got into the long grass in the Adelaide Parklands - that was the best way to stop the itchies. mites are tiny - so I guess that's why there aren't many photos of them. My garden has quite a few, but keeping the hound off the grass as much as possible seems to help.

Dogs May Have To Stand Aside For New Agility Competitor!
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
They had bunnies on some tv show recently to show what the Europeans are doing to keep their bunnies exercised. Erm. So I want to see agility brace with a rabbit, a whippet and a handler (human). Should be very exciting... -
I put a tarp, peg it down, and a towel on top - out on my lawn each day - and my dog, if she feels like sunbaking on the lawn, parks herself on that. Since I started doing that, her seasonal grass rash has reduced dramatically. If it does get a bit out of hand I apply some aloe vera goo wiped on directly from a split cactus leaf. Tastes yuck so it discourages her licking too. Sometimes the grass rash is really a mite rash ie it's caused by some tiny bug that lives on the grass. Sometimes it's the grass, sometimes its the flowers in the grass... Sometimes changing the grass type to something else helps. Eg a soft leaf buffalo vs kikuyu

Backpack With A Black Dog Picture
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
There's a few shops around (usually selling trophies and marketing paraphernalia) who can put any picture of your choice onto pretty much anything - mug, tshirt, sports bag, back pack... This kind of shop http://www.promotionsonly.com.au/bags/backpacks.htm Katmandu make stuff in Australia (as far as I know), and maybe mountain designs. Or any saddlery shop that also repairs horse rugs could make something. And then you can go to the promotions shop and get them to attach the picture. Most of the promo shops source their unbranded product from China. So you'd need to source your bag separately. Hope that helps. -

bloody check check and swing... as best I could tell - they meant turn tight back towards me or turn tight and back away from me not necessarily left or right. So I watched one person doing check check for turn tight around the nearest pole and back to me... around both poles... which doesn't really work if you want check check off the dog walk and into the tunnel on that side (which side)... damnagmanit - how can I teach my dog if I'm confused... I think it doesn't matter as long as you're consistent. And I'm so crap with my left and rights especially if I'm trying to get it right relative to someone else (the dog's left and right). Away from me and to me is easier... -
Lemme see We get a few of these killer attack drop dogs visiting our suburban neighbourhood during mating season, well starting now really... and the teacup version?

How Concerned Should I Be?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to silentchild's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Phew. I bet that's a relief all round. She hasn't learnt her lesson - she's a dog. Hopefully there will be no more chippies where she can reach them. My dog, got savagely attacked by the swing top bin when she was a puppy and has treated it with utmost respect ever since. My lesson was - anything the dog might find really interesting - put in the tall sulo bin with a lid that she hasn't figured out how to get into. Or keep it in the freezer until the bins go out. My dog doesn't get any chippies. There are some foods I don't share, no matter what big eyes she has or how much yelling she does. The crisps are another story. The tricks she offers up for those are impressive. -

If you're really worried about something your dog ate, and it's soft (no spikey bits like fish hooks), you can take the dog to the vet for the "vomit treatment", the sooner the better. There are about three different ways, maybe four, that I know of to induce doggy vomiting. One involves an expensive drug and its antidote... another involves a washing soda crystal - but best done with vet supervision. One I did at home - involves pouring around 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of very salty water down your dog's throat being careful the dog drinks it not inhales it... And then you get the chippies back and if you're lucky the dog makes the connection between chippies going down, and chippies coming back up and avoids them in the future. Though I know lots of dogs that happily eat their own vomit if it's mostly food. Yuck. second thing to do - hot chips reheat beautifully in a sandwich press - ie freeze the extra chippies and reheat later when you're feeling like a naughty snack. Oven tray works too but not quite as well as the sandwich toaster. I put them in for about 5 to 7 minutes or the time it takes me to eat the sandwich I toasted first. I don't know if a huge quantity of fatty food will cause long term problems. I would guess that a one off isn't a major problem and it wouldn't hurt to fast the dog for one meal or two or feed boiled rice if there is a tummy upset. -
Hi all trying to find out some info about a NSW lab breeder with the prefix "truebred" and the same user id on here, but hasn't any recent posts. Can someone PM me who knows of them. Thanks.

it looks a little bit like the greg derrett system in parts, with a bit of sheep herding arm waving stuff and maybe silvia trkman tho I'm not as familiar. It is very interesting that it was developed as a handling solution for deaf dogs based on the way the dog learned or responded. really nice go outs and round the backs too. Not quite sure how the handler manages to be so accurate to get the dog to do the right obstacle the right way and not the trap next to it. -
so we're playing guess the breed - with a bear? How about a Giant yellow faced honey seeker? http://www.wimp.com/adoptdogs/ after the way the Costa Rica Animal Shelter names their dogs.

wouldn't keep you safe from being pocket raided by my Kleenex thief. She can climb monkey bars and slippery dips. A previous dog could climb trees too.
