Behaviourist Recommendations Central Vic
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Better Late's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would ask one of these - I've seen them recommended and like what they post about training. If they can't help - they should be able to recommend someone who can. Nekhbet (user id in here) is Geelong based but can travel to Bendigo / Ballarat by arrangement. Nekhbet (Julie) http://inlinek9.webs.com/ Erny (Judi Buchan) http://www.prok9.com.au/ Your choice of dog sounds like she could be a lot of work - it's common for cattle dogs and SBT to be grumpy with other dogs unless you work on it on a daily basis. And it seems like this one might not be so fond of children either - so you will have to protect her from children and vice versa. And maybe do some desensitisation training so she knows what to do when there are children around. You don't want your one lapse in concentration or a careless tradesman to end in tragedy. On the hopeful side - she was able to be playful with you and your partner - so she's not timid about everything. This is an article about why or how you pick a dog from the pound / shelter. And when you don't. Getting an experienced dog training professional to make an assessment is a really good idea. http://www.clickandtreat.com/shelterdogs.htm -
Owner Cops Huge Fine After Dog Attack
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Flexistentialist's topic in In The News
This article is about fatal dog bites but the list has a lot of common factors in it... https://positively.com/articles/fatal-dog-bites-share-common-factors/ the jogger was not known to the dogs The dogs were not contained. And the owner was not there to supervise. The jogger was really lucky someone was there to help. And this. This makes me think the owner should not own dogs ever. I'm not surprised he didn't see it coming, he chained his dogs up at night and let them wander during the day. Actually train them? Nope. Give them some human time? Nope. Socialisation? Nope. One interesting thing about the news article - is there is no description of the dogs, not how big they were, whether they resembled any particular breed. The only time I see something like this happen is when the breed is not the typical "shark attack" breed eg not a pitbull or Rottweiler etc but maybe something more unexpected like Labrador or golden retriever or poodle cross. Or the reporter has suddenly heard all the complaints from dog owners about the misinformation on dog breeds and dog attacks. Hmm, must do some googling. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/news/dogs-face-euthanasia-after-viciously-mauling-jogge/2268431/ bull mastiff? -
Bark Bark Bark Bark Bark Bark Bark
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Lablover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Lab lover My dog would bark on course if I let her. Ok so that would be trials because I need the practice more than she does... She mostly barks if I've not made it clear to her where we're going next which is mostly because I've gotten lost. It doesn't matter how many times I walk or run the course beforehand - it looks different when I have to pay attention to my dog as well. And my dog always does something different to what I imagined. Barking for her - expresses excitement and frustration and it's also something she uses to train me to hand over treats / attention (oops - I've been rewarding it). It is also a sign of lack of impulse control - the same sort of thing as breaking the start line stay (leaving without permission). Ie you can train the dog not to do it if you want to. The key is to work out what is triggering it, and to not reward the barking by ignoring it or continuing... like the dog that fence barks because it thinks it is scaring away people walking by - except people walking by would mostly walk by anyway. So how do I untrain it? Or how do I train more impulse control? I get lost (deliberatly or accidentally) at training. A lot. I will start her off, run, point her at some jumps and then stop and act lost... or ask for a change of direction - late... if she barks - I can collar grab her and act boring until she calms down. If I'm sharing equipment at club - it's polite to get off and let someone else have a turn. So I trigger it then I add some "response cost" so she learns we're not going to have any fun, she's not going to earn any rewards when she's barking. At agility training - reward is mostly chasing me around, with food as a bonus. We also practice barking self control at the front door - which has been translating everywhere else we go. Ie she was blasting out the front door barking her head off, and I was letting her - she was on lead - and we were going out and I didn't see the problem (initially). But she was losing her impulse control in the face of exciting things - like the neighbours kids kicking a footy out the front, or strangers walking home from the bus stop past our house, or just people walking dogs past our house. Ie there's lots of triggers for barking excited - but the more triggers she can show self control - the more generalised it will be to new triggers or less common triggers like running agility courses. She's always been chatty at dinner time - so I put barking on cue - and then I can "yes" the prebark (quiet rrr) and reward that. Ie quiet barking, and have a second cue for "louder". So that helps get her to be able to control when she barks and puts value on it so she's less likely to give it away for free. Only reward barking if you have cue'd it. Susan Garrett had an on-course barky dog - buzzy and she chose not to train it out because she thought it would make him slower but she was much more careful with Swagger - not to reward any barking at all ie the game ended if there was any barking. Her exception is she lets all the dogs bark their heads off when visitors come. Agility - there is no judge's penalty for barking. It might make the dog a bit less responsive - I don't think they can hear all that well while they're in the middle of a bark. Swagger is faster than Buzzy was. -
Brisbane Behaviourist - Female Rivalry
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to 02Dogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think I'd be happy with this. I wouldn't be so happy if the dog had snuck in and done a pee/poop in the other dog's crate which I'd see as more of a territorial marking. I'd also be a bit concerned that the not-working dog could get to the working dog's crate at all. How can you safely put the working dog away if the other dog is in the wrong crate. Hopefully you've solved this one? I confess that my dog and one of her friends spent a lot of time in my dog's crates. My dog loves all crates pretty much and so does her friend. She will go into any open crate given the opportunity. Doesn't really matter which dog calls it home (friend or foe). She also likes to steal other dog's balls at the beach - but only if they give them to her ie abandon the ball because she's looking at them. She won't fight them or growl at them for it. -
Homeopathic Vaccination
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I don't want pretend resistance - I want actual resistance. Should be detectable with a titre test even. There's plenty of medicine that works and can be shown to work with double blind study - and they still don't understand how / why it works. So the fact that it is not "fully understood" doesn't mean anything one way or the other. All the studies I've seen that do double blind studies on the performance of homeopathic remedies - show the same result as the control group - ie the one which did not get the "active" therapy. And that's pretty scary. -
Homeopathic Vaccination
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh - personally - I think the whole concept of Homeopathy is crazy... but I'm willing to look at a double blind study or some sort of testing to see if the dogs have immunity. I did a bit of google and they're not allowed to call it "vaccination" when relating to humans. Ie some homeopaths sell something they call "vaccination" to human mums for their human babies and it's lead to problems where the human mums genuinely thought they had babies immune - wrong. But I haven't seen much that says that someone (or some dog) who had homeopathic vaccination - caught the disease either. The way they'd do it in the lab would be to force exposure tho not just wait for it to happen naturally (eg visiting a dog park in Salisbury). Don't know if that's been done either. (poor mice). -
Hi all I was walking my dog home from the park and got into a chat with someone who was watering a "Say hello" friend's garden, about dogs and dog training and dog care... She's into homeopathy and homeopathic vaccination. I'm wondering what that is. She also said that one of our SA dog clubs will accept Homeopathic vaccination as proof of immunity for joining their dog club. Which makes me want to cross them off the list as far as competition or visits go. Tho it's not as bad a parvo area as the north side of Adelaide. I was thinking of getting my dog titre tested for immunity against the vax that can be given tri-annually. has anyone had their dog vaccinated "homeopathically" and then done the titre test for immunity? Does anyone know of it working in an area where the virus is active?

my natural remedy for my dog when she gets itchy is to keep her off the grass. There's nothing she likes better than a good belly drag on the kikuyu unfortunately - her skin comes up in a big red itchy rash when she does that. I put aloe vera direct from the cactus leaf on it which stops her from licking as well (very very bitter and slightly toxic). She gets less rash if I make her sit on a towel on a tarp on the grass. For some reason she doesn't like a hammock bed on the grass which is irritating but it didn't cost me much. sigh.

New Agility Champion 600
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
congrats, awesome effort and he looks like he's having so much fun. :) -
A man rescuing a willing dog from a horrible situation isn't really what I saw in the video. Neither look pleased to see each other. And I'm not surprised that the camera owners knew the thief - given how quickly he was found. I also know that people who want dogs for bad things like dogs that are "free to good home" and they will lie too. The whole thing doesn't make sense.

penstar1000 Have you tried working without a clicker? Unless you're going for something really precise like holding one back leg in the air - you can often get a bunch of stuff using just a short marker word like "yes". And it's less exciting than a clicker for some dogs. And maybe tone down the reward - tho with BC they just love the reward of more work... so make sure he's being reasonably calm before he gets any "more work".
-
Do some flat work and body awareness without the agility equipment. You don't want him associating the too excited to listen with agility equipment. I second what Kavik says - teach him collar grab, if he goes over the top - grab his collar and wait for him to calm down. Maybe work on lots and lots of impulse control games. Like "its yer choice" and "start line stays" (don't need any equipment). Does he retrieve a toy back to you? Work on random sits and downs on the way to the toy and the way back (more impulse control)... Use pool noodles or sulo bins for practicing your handling signals, and stay away from anything that looks like a bit of agility equipment until he's listening to you better.

I feel vaguely uncomfortable with people who set their dogs or children up for an uncomfortable experience and then laugh. Maybe because my parents did it to us kids. maymo beagle and lemon Dog fetch brilliance (dachshund with ball toss machine) dog fetch over the fence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=EZVTp21jJ5U dog fetches cat.

I agree. So you reward the breeder for doing something dodgy. And now you complain? Unfortunately - this just means they will probably do it to someone else. So you advocate doing no research at all and accepting puppies that are not as advertised. What if you'd paid money for an Amstaff and got sent a JRT. Would you still accept it? Really? I know there are several breeders in SA that I'd call puppy farmers. I can't believe their dogs can live out in sheds in paddocks and get enough human time when they have so many of them. They might even comply with RSPCA hygiene requirements and SACA and ANKC ethics - but I can't believe when one breeder is listing more than 100 puppies a year that they're not a puppy farm. Doesn't take a lot of research to find these out. All you'd have to do is ask anyone here who is a SACA member to check their journals for that breeder and how many puppies they have listed. Some of them even have photos of their puppy shelters on their websites and you can see for yourself it's a puppy farm. And did you write a formal complaint to SACA about what this breeder did? No? Then you allow the problem to continue.
-
Buying from interstate is always fraught with risk. Australian consumer law still applies - he didn't get what he paid for - he could send the puppy back and ask for his money back. If he'd gone there to pick the puppy up - he could have looked at it and left it there. It does cut both ways, the breeder has to do their research and the buyer has to do their research. Just because the breeder has a pretty website with FIGJAM testimonials on it - doesn't mean they're responsible. Same with the buyer - you have to find a way to verify what they say from some other source.

The epic H360 video webinar recording has been posted for everyone not just people who have joined. http://handling360.com/3/ FAQ where to sign up ------------------------ Link to join up (note there is a money back guarantee for limited time - if you're not happy). There is a monthly payment option If you can't find the right link to pay - send an email to * [email protected] * this link includes the all in one payment option and the monthly installment option closes next Thurs (toronto time) http://handling360.com/finalvideo/ what does SG do if the dog knocks a bar at trial (not training) ------------------------------------------------------------ Knocked bar on course - SG completes the course and then makes a record of what she needs to work on at training. It's important not to make a fuss at trial if things go wrong - chances are the bar was knocked because of handler error (not setting your dog up into the jump correctly) There's plenty of video of SG doing international competition that show this on youtube what is "proprioception" ------------------------- - this is body awareness - how you know where your hand is when you put it behind your back (you can read Oliver Sachs books to find out what happens if it is broken) what is a jump bump and a spider -------------------------------- Spider is PVC tubing set up to guide a dog over a jump. Jump bump is a bit of PVC down pipe cut in half lengthwise - and used to help dog jump striding. (copy link and watch later) What would SG do if she couldn't use verbal cues (laryngitus) or the dog was deaf ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know.

Dogs Pooing On Furniture
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to keetamouse's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Apparently DAP is the old product name and ADAPTIL is the new name - according to their website. But again - I don't know - I was just looking for more info on why they market it for helping with exactly the problem that you say it aggravates. They're scamming if that's the case and they don't mention the problems on their website. All the websites that mention the problem refer to sex pheromones and the old product name. -
Jessie's Mysterious Sickness
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to dezzyno.1's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
They don't dna test the hair - they test what chemicals are in it. I think. To get dna from hair - you actually need the follicle bit at the scalp / skin end. They take a clipping of hair and then analyse the chemicals. They can test for the presence of marijuana use in the previous six months this way - because depending how long the hair is or how old the hair in the cutting is - that's when the chemical was grown into the hair eg if the hair sample is six months out of the scalp - and tests for whatever - that's when the problem was. So taking a hair cutting of when she is sick today - won't show anything about today's episode but if the hair sample includes hair that was growing during the last attack - that might show something. So the hair test - desparately needs a scientific study so there is some unbiased non-anecdotal evidence to back it up. That's the trouble with science - if they haven't done the study - it doesn't mean the whatever doesn't work. And that will get reported as "no scientific evidence". I suspect if there was more money for the big drug companies on proving the results one way or the other - there would be a study... -
I am finding it a bit odd that suggesting that Perfume actually meet with breeders until she finds one willing to sell her a pup that meets her fussy and somewhat superficial criteria (my opinion of what she's written) - gets some of us (who aren't even breeders) called arrogant and condescending. A complete inability to wait for a litter - doesn't suggest the kind of patience I'd be looking for in a puppy owner. And everything Perfume has been accusing various breeders of - take a look in the mirror. And remember that breeders read threads like these. And plenty of them have told you what you need to do to get the puppy of your dreams and you outright refuse and reject and then accuse of being rude and overbearing and privacy invaders. If you want a responsible breeder's puppy - you're going to have to give up some of your privacy. If you think they're going too far - what's wrong with saying you're a bit uncomfortable with that and why do they want it. There are scammers (not) selling your dream puppy - and so it's fine to be asking questions too instead of bitching in here. You might be a fantastic home for a puppy but at the moment you're coming across as defensive and all those same things you've been accusing the breeders who have turned you down of being. But most of all - very impatient.

teach first collar grab then it's yer choice everything after that becomes a game of it's yer choice. And a response cost for being distracted can be added with a collar grab.
-
Kavik - probably not. But you can join and then ask for a refund (is that completely wrong?). Quite a few people got a bit peeved at the start of the coaching call because their attention to answering questions got distracted quite a few times by the live text chat going flat out (with more good questions but also repeats of the questions they planned to answer anyway). A lot of people wanted to buy just the bits they wanted to work on but SG has sold it at about 1/4 the price she could get if she sold off component pieces - but for some reason - people don't understand for the money they get heaps of extra stuff, rather than they're paying for stuff they don't want. I don't know how she can fix that. Maybe she could sell it as flat work and blue print with all the other stuff included for free... The problem is - if she sells just the course work - the people won't be able to follow that training without the foundation stuff. She really doesn't want people who aren't happy with the product - to feel like they're stuck with it. Anyway - some of what she talked about is covered in the previous 3 webinar videos (still available from the "pay here" link) - there were a lot of people on this coaching call who hadn't watched those so were asking questions that were answered in the previous videos. And some of what she talked about is covered by recallers etc. But you're not going to get much of whats in H360 by watching today's webinar. Because it is just so huge.
-
Breeders - sell it amongst themselves? What do you mean by that? And maybe you could get yourself included in their "in crowd" by actually having some face to face meetings and being MORE PATIENT. And how would you feel if you were told that you were "second choice" or 10th choice and therefore miss out on a puppy... I understand you can love all three breeds - but it also (from out here reading your posts) makes you seem a bit indecisive. And breeders get burnt by indecisive buyers every day - because they "maybe I'd like that puppy, I'll have to think about it" - indecisive and then they change their minds. Some of these tyre kickers never even let the breeder know they've changed their mind about where they're getting their puppy. Can you see how what you've written in here - can make you look like one of those people?
-
I think - no promises - as soon as the H360 rego closes - she will open up the opportunity to buy access to watch by internet video the fit paws body awareness symposium thing she's doing soon. Not sure if I want that or not - I've got a fair idea of what all the exercises look like and have trouble with the idea of paying $$$ for gym exercise balls and floaties. I suppose the $$$ goes into making the things dog claw proof? I did enjoy watching the Icpeeps camp internet video but it meant I didn't sleep for two days straight.

What an intense Coaching call. They managed to have a version of the chat roll going and they got up to 1500 viewers at one point... it settled down somewhere around the 1000 people watching mark. A lot of them were complete newbies to the SG way of everything and some of them asked questions that were like level 10 of foundation layers to achieve... eg "how do you stop a dog from barking (or biting) on the agility course... Erm - first you train crate games, and collar grab and its yer choice... And then you work out what triggers the barking and stop rewarding the barking with what the dog wants... so something different with every dog - how do you answer that when you can't see what is going on with the student's dog... argh. Lots of questions about contacts - SG said she wants to revamp the contacts course to be more like the H360 one in look and feel and then open it up again. woot. Tho I think I still have access... really should do some of the training... This was one of the FAQ. SG did mention the webinar being a bit like the shamwow of dog training. Link to join up (note there is a money back guarantee for limited time - if you're not happy). There is a monthly payment option to pay four instalments ie a quarter each time. If you can't find the right link to pay or you need something a bit different - send an email to [email protected] this link includes the all in one payment option and the monthly installment option closes Thurs (toronto time) http://handling360.com/finalvideo/ Another FAQ was - what does SG do if her dog knocks a bar during a trial (which is different to what she does during training)... these are two videos that show what she does if something goes wrong during a trial - except she also reviews the video and makes a record of what training she needs to work on before the next run. 2014 WAO
