  1. Ooh suggest a name - I love these threads... I'm thinking some german weather related word... or maybe dutch (depending on what origin you like for likely dog breed). Wolke - german for cloud pronounced volky Sturm - storm Smokey - comes out as rauchig (rowshig) - not so pretty regen (or Reagan) - rain Schnee - Snow snowy - didn't translate so well. There's a list of german female dog names here. http://www.all-about-great-danes.com/female-german-dog-names.html I'm not fond of giving human names to dogs... But I quite like Milla - Industrious (busy?) from the list There's a few I like the meaning but good luck yelling "ursula" across the park... Zelda - means Grey Warrior Or you could go with Lindt (Lint) as in chocolate or belly button fluff... Linty Tho the vet receptionist will certainly write that as "Lindy". Dutch for "soft" is "zacht" - tho that seems like a boys name...
  2. I second the suggestion to get in contact with Steve Courtney at http://www.k9protraining.com.au/ (Contact details at the bottom of the page) He's dealt with the whole fuss surrounding dogs that have attacked (humans) and are in trouble with the council before. the dog is unlikely to get PTS for attacking another dog. It would if it had attacked and damaged a human. The council cannot sieze a dog that is in your house without a warrant and police. They can enter and sieze one from the back yard. So I would be keeping the dog inside as much as possible and the side gates to the yard locked but I would not be leaving the dog loose in a yard it can escape from. All toilet breaks would be on lead from now until the fence is built better (Steve can advise what needs building). The owners of Houdini dog may need to build a dog run. They will have to build a dog run with a solid floor and dog proof walls and roof if the dog gets declared dangerous (which is a possibility). In NSW a dog can be assessed for "dangerous" and undeclared if it passes the test - which means the requirements for keeping it muzzled in public and locked in a run at home are lifted. I don't know what the process is for this - in this case the dog has not yet been declared. I don't think the issue of whether the other dog should have been there is relevant at this point because your friend's dog got out. There's possibly a fine for that (dog wandering at large?), and for attacking the other dog. And the other dog owner should also be fined for having their dog where it should not be. This is the NSW companion animals act. Lots of different bits apply. Do not invite the vampires in. Ever. Keep the dog inside "the Residence". http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/caa1998174/index.html
  3. https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/video/watch/26772013/woman-attacked-at-dog-show/ Extract of the transcript - (stuff in brackets - I put in) I wasn't there, didn't see anything, haven't heard anything except for a news break tonight on the telly (ch 10 I think - but the web link is ch seven). Hope the Westie and owner are ok.
  4. My dog - I don't think she ever had her rear dew claws. I got her when she was 10 weeks old - she still had a wound from the desex op but there was no wounds where the rear dew claws might have been. But she uses her front dew claws all the time - a bit like thumbs to get a grip on things. They're very strong and quite painful if it's you she grabs.
  5. Do you want to be more specific? They cover anything to do with dogs from breeders to owners and trainers... They have a nice website with some very detailed but sometimes vague policies and codes of conducts for different membership categories. And they have had some big awards nights. Some awards have gone to members here. Apart from that - don't know much about them. Members in SA don't usually advertise the fact ie I don't see many doing agility or obedience stuff.
  6. You can also find rings like that in boat chandlers - especially ones for sailing boats (yachting supplies?) but most ones that have rigging supplies of some sort would have those. Stainless steel too. Or brass. Just be careful asking for a "brass ring" - it means something else. https://binksmarine.com.au/store/yacht-fittings/other-yacht-fittings/hooks-pins-rings I get stainless steel spiral rings from Binks too - best things for holding on rego tags and id tags. well not quite the best things but pretty handy.
  7. A friend of mine - asked me to help her catch some stray kittens that she'd managed to lure into her laundry... She took them to the AWL - who told her "you feed them - then they're your cats" and "don't feed them" - but how else do you lure kittens into traps. That's in South Australia. Pretty sure it's illegal to dump animals and pets - so there might be something to report with the footage? the footage may also help the pound "attempt to contact the owner"... And most well organised pounds allow interested parties to express an interest in keeping the animal they bring in and then let them take the animal home after all legal requirements are met (eg attempts to contact the owner and allowing them time to claim the kitten). You'd probably have to pay for desexing and vet care (vax and etc) that any adopter would have to pay. Tho you don't know for sure that the kitten wasn't just left by someone who found it somewhere else. ie never owned it.
  8. There's not many photos on the kennel's website of the pens where the dogs are kept but the doors look like regular house doors that a reasonable person would expect to hold a dog. But if something like this happened where the fault was caused by a failure of the kennel structure - I can't see how the kennel can expect the dog owner to pay. Not sure where the liability would be if the dog had attacked a human or someone else's dog. Fun and money for lawyers, I'm sure. I'd had some internet conversations with the kennel owner and thought him quite sensible and reasonable about dog training at least. There must be a way through if it doesn't get too much of who is right and who is wrong.
  9. There's study. Has to do with oxytocin... http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2015/03/16/4191191.htm
  10. I will PM you the email address off the membership form on facebook. There's a lot of SA based dog training stuff (agility and herding and other stuff) that I keep up with via facebook. Catalogues and training days and everything. You don't have to use facebook for anything else if you don't want to. Tho it does make it easier if you're following trainers in the categories you're interested in when you try to join a secret group and have a dog in your avatar (facebook picture). I lock down my stuff and have and have "only me" can see or make up stuff in the rude personal questions FB asks.
  11. penstar did you try the link I gave - it seems to work from a browser where I'm not signed in as a page liker... I think you do need to be signed in to facebook to see it tho.
  12. Try the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/herding.southaustralia?fref=ts and failing that - the agility sa facebook page / group you have to join that one - hmm it says secret so I don't know if I should just post a link here or not. I know there are people running herding trials - but I don't know if anyone is teaching. I think there must be. The person I used to go to - moved from SA to Tas so that's a bit far for lessons.
  13. so the dog was poisoned probably after it got home. So now they have more investigating to do... when was the food prepared, which country... And there's no more info about other dogs - ie Crufts doesn't know anything... There's a few reasons dogs around here get poisoned - rat or snail killer gets into their yard by rat/bird/angry neighbour and they eat it. And I've heard of dogs eating drug dealer's stashes in the park... not good.
  14. I was thinking 300m is a bloody good kick - even if it was wind assisted. It still looks like a usable footy - which is how I know my dog didn't leave it there...
  15. There was a show called "downsize my pet" on the telly last weekend - from NZ They downsized (partially) a very fat dalmation. I've met a few dalmations you can play cards on their backs they're so fat. One owner said they couldn't limit the food because if they did - the dog started eating rocks out the garden and that was worse... I guess more expensive. I've seen a few really really fat labs. So fat they get puffed out in 30 seconds barking at you when you go by their gate... And my fat friend, her fat hubby and fat BC. The BC is 12 years old at the moment - but I figure - morbidly obese, good chance it has diabetes and they think that it panting all the time means it's happy.
  16. Is there a reason you don't want to ring up DogsNSW and ask them. The other possibility is the ad contains details that are stolen or don't belong to the person using them.
  17. Gawd - this is horrible. I hope the business pays for their mistake. All I can suggest - is next time the dogs go to different boarding kennels... I know when I boarded mine at RSPCA - that they did not follow my instructions about her tummy rash and when I picked her up - it was bright red. And their excuse was they never saw her licking or chewing. She's not stupid - she does that when there are no humans around (or awake) eg 4:30am is when I have to stop her. I also gave them one spare dinner - just in case - and they fed that to her thinking she'd missed out on one. Which is a mistake I can understand - she was pretty happy about getting two dinners...
  18. Or just your food? http://www.sbs.com.au/news/insight/tvepisode/puppy-love I was channel surfing and thought - gee there's a lot of dogs on Insight tonight... oh look nearly everyone has a dog... And they're discussing how dogs think and what motivates them and how to read doggy body language... interesting. I've missed half of it but SBS has catch up.
  19. I liked the secret life of the dog - except the bit they did on silver foxes. Ugh. interesting but UGH!!!
  20. ! You don't want to rock up to pick up your puppy and freak at the price then? I hate surprises so I guess I'd be asking what I could expect. For the breeders in the thread - when is the right time to ask how much?
  21. I've got one of those for the breeders too. but it does pay to start gentle and work your way into the deep stuff.
  22. This just floated by my facebook feed Puppy buyer interrogation chair
  23. I hate situations like that. If I yell at the owner or their dog, my dog takes it as the ok to join in and see their dog off. Actually if a dog like that jumps all over her - there's a fair chance she will just see it off with a yelp from it. I'm thinking the only way to prevent something really bad happening to my dog from their dog - cos you just don't know with strange dogs - is to use them as footballs. The owner of these other dogs are not in the right - but there's no explaining to them that you and your dog have a (legal) right to defend yourselves. And it's against the law for them to let their dog harass other dogs, people, livestock or wildlife.
  24. There's always a balance between sport that gets out of control because nobody enforces the rules - and sport that goes completely underground - no rules... Eg dog fighting, rooster fighting etc. Ie if you ban racing and lure coursing - you can end up with illegal activity, no ethics and no animal welfare. A bit like trying to outlaw alcohol. Or other drugs. Find a way to make it more accessible and more ethical (safety of the dogs first)... Lure coursing - at the moment - run one dog at a time, and with a bundle of old tshirts and plastic bags as the lure. If they ban this - will they also ban flirt poles, chasing the hose, tennis ball (lots of injuries from this too), and tug? there's always a balance.
