Pro Heart Injection Vs Tablets
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Willowlane's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had this the first year I had my puppy, I guess she would have been about 16 weeks. But I didn't renew it the next year because it just seemed horribly expensive... The first injection was "free", but the booster injection (couple of weeks later) was $80 (5 years ago)... and the following year - the injection was round the $80 - $100 mark. And it doesn't cover fleas or gut worms but some of the other products do ie - for me it worked out to buy 6 month packs of Revolution that came with a wormer and this year I'm using senteniel - one chew covers fleas, heart worm and gut worms. So far so good. The other thing to watch out for is vets like to give the heart worm injection - with the vaccinations but the actual product says not to do that - ie a bit too much to dump on the immune system at once. And theoretically - before starting any heart worm treatment - a puppy or dog should be tested to make sure it doesn't have it - or there can be complications that can kill a dog that could be prevented by a different treatment or something. I imagine something like dying worms in the heart cause heart attacks or something. But I don't know why exactly. Would be good to know if anyone likes the heart worm injections and have used them more than that free promo year (and if you do decide to go that way - definitely ask about the cost and see if you can get a discount (free) first injection. -
Now I'm wondering how sentenial chewables work... I didn't think the spot ons had any repellent effect after the first 24 hours of stinky dog, either. At least my dog will still get bit by mozzies when she's dosed with a spot on. Found fleas once when she was on frontline - but they were very groggy and easy to catch and destroy. Haven't found ticks but mostly avoid tick areas.

He says he did contact the owner... But sly works really well in Big brother. Not so sure about dog boarding tho. -

I've never seen a cav start anything, or finish anything... Seen plenty of other dogs do that including poodle crosses but not cavs. -
All Questions About Dogs And Crates
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Willowlane's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've noticed this... my dog will happily camp in any available crate - no matter what dog was in it before her... I can't get Pele the bull terrier out of my dog's crate without help tho my dog is happy to share with her - it makes packing up to go home more interesting... And one night at agility training - my dog stole the puppy's crate, and then the puppy stole my dog's crate... when each respective dog was out doing their training thing. I'm not sure what would have happened if they'd met in the same crate... I was more worried about the puppy owner's reaction but she didn't see my dog in her puppy's crate... And I just laughed when puppy went in my dog's crate... I've seen dogs at training who decide they don't want to try to figure it out any more - and will run around looking for any empty crate when they find they're locked out of their own (can't think why). Must be an evolutionary thing that crates are like dog dens - especially the ones with covered sides. -

That erm... I didn't look until I read all the comments because I was thinking some horrible act of dog suffering... It looks like the standard 30 seconds of joy that my dog gets from anything stuffed... But in the same theme - this was touring fb today (or a version of it) 23 pets and their first toys as a baby and as a grown up... Not one of my puppy's stuffed toys lasted longer than 30 seconds - she doesn't hug them to sleep - not even the skins. http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2015/05/23-pets-whove-loved-the-same-toys-since-they-were-babies/ -

Hmm Needs another study - how your dog reacts to people that you the owner are "mean" to. Ie if I scold someone for letting their dog pee on my stuff, my dog helps. I'm not sure about the people being mean thing... I'm routinely made profoundly uncomfortable by my brother's attitude to dog training - and my dog thinks he's icecream. She won't do anything he asks tho, like sit, drop, stop licking... -

Yes. She loves being in her crate. when she was about 18 months old. I didn't know about crate trainig before that. PS - she did go in a crate when she was a puppy to limit the possibility for destruction in the house when I was out buying food for us, but it wasn't "trained" just shoved in... Only when she has to - like at agility competitions, hockey, and if I shut the door... at home she can go in or out as she likes unless I have guests and she's rude to them or too licky... we still use it. usually between the end of the couch and the wall. or folded up. nope. She uses it for comfort and to cadge treats. She sleeps on the couch or on a mat in the yard, or on a dog bed next to my bed or under the office desk... -
termite detection dogs cancer detection dogs My fave is the termite detection dogs - I'm pretty sure a well trained dog would be better than the guy I had for my last inspection - what a joke he was.

Hmm the clinical notes make it pretty clear it was most likely a dog attack (bite marks too). So not even an accidental crash-tackle that zoomie dogs do. Just so much wrong with this. -

Just feels like a sort of publicity stunt... So she trains more than one dog... still talent... all round. I didn't know they set a limit on how many dogs could be in the team. They don't set a limit on how many can be in a band or dance troupe. -

Did anyone say - about the xrays whether those breaks were before the dog got buried then dug up or after or because of being buried and dug up? Or something else. One of the Ch7 clips showed diggers - and if that's what they used to dig up the dog - then it would be completely mangled. Still don't know why they buried it on site. Doesn't make sense. -
Hmm, I can't get woollies online to cough up the ingredients. What does your pack say? The amazon ones - if you poke the page enough - says the ingredients have sugar but the pack says they don't so not quite sure what is going on there. Of course google is completely blinded by the reviews - that's all it comes back with.

thanks jfletcher I do love an update and definitely very cute dogs. good luck into the future with it.

Frosty's latest dinner batch has pumpkin skin... and her rash isn't as bad as usual but I thought that was because she's been wearing the cone of shame to stop her trying to chew her leg off (I think she scraped it, and now it's a bit scabby and itchy).

Slow dog? I think I get 1 second... depending on how surprised my dog is by something landing in front of her. And the kid that waves a sausage sandwich in her face has no chance. You gave that to me, right? -

What Do You See As Reasonable
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to OSoSwift's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think 90% of the problem was that the regular kennel owner / manager was away and her friend filled in. And her friend was clueless. She kept telling me that some dogs get the runs in a kennel situation (this would be the first time that happened to my dog) and her excuse for not keeping her clean was "she (the owner) should have told you the hydrobath was broken". WTF. I'm not sure - a month later that I'm calm enough to ring up and discuss it nicely - not that anyone seems to answer the phone. But I need to get on with it. My vet advised not reporting it to the RSPCA without talking to the owner first. I guess what I want to hear is she gets the hydrobath fixed and never ever lets her "friend" mind the place for her again. -
pic 2 - the thing with purple bits in the leaves is on another list of dog itchy plants - looks like a "Tradescantia pallida" variety http://www.karingalvet.com.au/Pet-Care/Dog-Care-/Contact-Allergy-Plants.asp pic 7 - everything, the grass, the weeds, all of it. but it does depend on the dog you might want to check what the plant is on the right of pic 1 - if it's a bromilliad probably ok, but if it's a baby palm tree - I've seen those get about 20m high and 1.5m across at the base and they spread seedlings, ie that's the wrong plant in the wrong place. And the date palms - have very spikey leaf tips too. But I can't tell for sure which it is from that picture.

What Have You Learned From Your Dogs?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Henrietta's topic in General Dog Discussion
what has this dog taught me? That punishment just makes dogs (and people) avoid you but doesn't change their undesirable behaviour. That making a dog (or a people) work for what they get - makes them value and want what they get more. That catching dogs or people doing something right, and praising that - brings much joy all round... And there is no such thing as too much pats and ear rubs and butt rubs (that bit on the back before the tail)... And the best way to deal with an unwanted door to door salesperson is not to let them get a word in edgewise and be quite scary. (I just want to see your electricity bill - you'd better go I don't know if I can hold her much longer...) -
Lots of people will pick a puppy or dog because they feel sorry for it. Some unscrupulous people actually count on this, "it's the last of the litter all alone" and other manipulative emotional tugs. I think there needs to be a half way point. Buyers get attached and are unable to give the puppy back but if the breeder can see the puppy is not well - then maybe they shouldn't allow it to be sold, or give a big discount... The buyers are taking a big risk with the sick puppy - what if it's fatal like parvo or that nerve disease that can kill BC puppies? It messes with my head that some buyers will take the sick puppy and other buyers will give up on the perfectly healthy puppy because they can't deal with what puppies are like (lock up your socks and undies).

I keep wondering why "the general public" still think it's ok to buy a puppy from a shop... and then we get insanely cute and watchable ads like that... Nope we can't tell people what to do but the ad makers have missed a good opportunity to promote responsible breeders.
