Name Suggestions For Male Yellow Lab

Oddball - after the maremma in the movie - get in early... -
I can't think of a safe fly repellent that works. This recipe is supposed to work for mozzies. Haven't tried it myself but it's really tempting. Mozzie yard spray big bottle cheap mouth wash (33oz or 1 litre approx.) 3 cups epson salt 2 stale 12oz (350 ml approx. each, must be Amurrican) cheap beer Mix until salt is dissolved spray where you sit outside (or where mozzies like to be) Repeat every 80 days or twice a summer. I have some rosemary based fly repellent from an equestrian centre - it cost $25 for a 750ml bottle ish, it smells really nice but it doesn't stop mozzies biting. It might stop flies but haven't noticed. using fly traps can help reduce the population. And cleaning up all the nearby poops. my mum got a "yard guard" bug zapper and at the moment it is knocking off lots of moths that are the ones that make green looper caterpillars. The plants near this zapper - have no caterpillars. don't know it dispatches flies or mozzies - too many moth bodies to tell.

Dundee - as in crocodile ~ Bouncer Cooper Banjo (Patterson) Shark (after Greg Norman - he was blonde too) Dermi (Dermott Brereton) -
Yes. Some of the dogs looked like there was something major happening behind the camera. Ie if the sound had been on maybe we would have had a better idea. The one of the dog getting a back rub and licking - I have no idea what was going on there, but there was no option for No idea... and you couldn't see the dog's face well enough to tell if it was stressed (licking) or enjoying itself and that's how it shows that. My dog had a similar massage on Friday and she started off anxious then peeved (cos the vet was poking for sore bits and found some). The vet got quite a few dirty looks but no elvis lip (about to nip/bite).

casual is not the opposite of professional. to me "casual" means only occasionally professional means - get paid for it - usually enough to make a living but not always. And you can be a casual professional. ie get paid occasionally. Some of those dogs look familiar. Corvus? And I found some of the questions a bit repetitive. I also found the scaling a bit inconsistent, they felt like some were scaled between opposites -2 -1 0 1 2 and some were more like from 0 to extremely (where was "neutral" - neither one or the other). 0 1 2 3 4 which I did not interpret in the same way.

I'm At Whit's End With Puppy Biting!
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to joey13's topic in General Dog Discussion
I tried the yelp, scream - and you have to scream the same way as the dog does when you step on its tail... but it didn't work with mine. What ended up working was if she grabbed me - I'd very slowly push my hand towards the back of her mouth until she spat me out. And then I would ignore her for 10 seconds or until she started getting upset about it - a little bit longer than that. And if she didn't bite me again - then I'd pat her very gently, nice long strokes. I found with her - the more rough I was with her - the more rough she'd be with me and that's how she played with other dogs. What she did when other dogs were too rough - was sort of freeze up and repeatedly present her butt - no more running or playing and if the other puppy didn't let up - she'd come back to me to sort it for her. I also use collar grab. You play a game where you train her to love having her collar grabbed (say name then grab collar give treat and repeat five times), and then you can grab the collar when she grabs you. And praise when she spits you out (looking for treats) but don't give her treats - well mine would just learn "bite + let go" means treats. You don't want it to be that good. I also highly recommend rigger gloves - they don't last forever but it hurts much less when a puppy bites (and makes the push back game easier). And a kong full of frozen food. for a bully - a black kong. -
Why would she think that? She lives there, nothing bad ever happened there before (in her head). Police are supposed to be trained how to keep the public calm and manageable so stuff like this doesn't happen. I don't think the policeman thought about what he was doing either. You never know when you're going to meet crazy. But you should (especially in his line of work) always be prepared.

The whole altercation might have been avoided if the cops had just been more helpful than "you can't go this way". They didn't need her distraction or four cops dealing with something that could have been avoided. They could have avoided it. They ought to have a routine plan - eg set up cordon - have a place to direct residents and their visitors and a contact number so they can find out when they can go home. It's not that hard and could have avoided trouble, extra paperwork, taking up space in a paddy wagon and then a cell and finding places for the dogs etc. The woman is clearly not telepathic - how was she supposed to know why they were there. Why should it matter why they were there.

what I've learned from my dog training study is that the best way to get a dog not to do something is to give it something else to do that is incompatible with the thing you don't want. Eg dog jumping - you ask for sit. Human wants into an area that is cordoned off, send human to the local shops/church/school. Eg after the fires in the Adelaide hills or anywhere else. If they didn't give the humans something to do instead, the humans would find some other way to get into the exclusion zone. And one thing you can do with a human that helps that is harder to do with a dog - is explain why. Eg for safety and you phone this number (eg 131444) to find out when you can come back.

Female Staffie Face Licking Male Cocker
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to littledrover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I stopped a staffy from licking my feet by covering them with taste-bad in my case it was RID insect repellent. The side effect of no licking was accidental but welcome. So if you can find something that the staffy really doesn't like the taste of - put that where she licks first. The chin of the other dog might be a good spot. For some reason they don't seem to be able to lick their own chins. I use vics vapour rub to stop licking on furniture (and marking it) but that's not good to put on another dog. -

Mine (farm dog bitsa) usually leaves her nose sticking through the plane of the door - just to keep tabs on where the treats are. -
I dunno. I think they should always have a plan. Especially for Domestic Violence cases. The person trying to get home could be the perpetrator or a witness or immediate family that needs protecting too. The police might not want to tell anyone why the street is cordoned off, but they should be able to say - it's dangerous, stay clear or the safe place to be is... local shops or school or some place suitably out of the way and have a team there to get details of the displaced - in case they need them. A street around the corner from me was cordoned off and that was the way I normally use to get anywhere useful... I went and had a chat and the police didn't tell me anything specific but they were able to tell me how long the road was expected to be closed for roughly, and that it was dangerous to cross the cordon and to stay clear.

What Is The Worst Thing About Your Chosen Breed?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Steph M's topic in General Dog Discussion
If people ask me if my dog bites - I always say yes. She does. I tend to answer questions like that a bit literally. But I might tell them "I think if you pat her here, gently, she will enjoy and not bite you" :) -
That makes sense. If you don't get the foundations right that can lead to problem icebergs in the future.

It was sad the police didn't have some place for the residents to go if they couldn't get home. I wonder what the usual plan is for that? And from the video, I'm having a guess that he told her to take the dog poop away but she couldn't because he wouldn't let her home and for some reason - in that part of the video she didn't just ask him to dispose of it or what she should do while she was waiting for them to re-open the area. The attack seemed quite sudden like she was talking and then she snapped. However pretty sure the cops would have been bitten if I was screaming on the ground while they jumped on top of me. I don't think my dog would have just watched. :S I don't want to find out the hard way she wouldn't help me if I was in trouble (even if it was trouble of my own making).
-
At least it was still in the bag. For some reason it makes me feel less bad about putting my dog poop in a public bin, instead of my home bin. But I'm good friends with my neighbours all through my burb and that's where I would have gone if I couldn't go home.

Nekhbet What do you with a dog that won't redirect when told from one bite suit guy to another (eg dog needs to return to the handler who is being attacked by a new threat) - Fun ends is part of a story Steve White told about a dog that wouldn't re-direct on command... I'm sure there was more to it but - I guess it can be a problem. Something similar happens when you're training agility equipment and the dog loses the balance between the tunnel and the scramble and "tunnel sucks" instead of learning the "discrimination" commands.

I have a friend who thought he might get a Golden Retriever instead of another beagle because he thought the GR would somehow shed less or would seem like it shed less because the hair was longer than beagle hair. The beagle - if it ever got out and it was quite the climber... would zoom off on the first trail it found... recall? what? busy! -

Australian Cattle Dogs... An occasional and somewhat unpredictable tendency to decide for themselves that someone or their dog needs a good scolding and maybe a bit of touch up as well. Likes foraging. A bit too much. Smarter than me - good at training me. A really high pitched penetrating demanding scream-bark in the vocal repertoire. Not as "big boned" as I thought they were. Oops. -

How To Tell If My Dog Is Going Deaf?
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to Lady Flying Furball's topic in General Dog Discussion
yup, open the fridge, get the yogurt tub out and take the lid off. If the dog is not there - deafness is a possibility. Drop a potato crisp on the floor? good hearing - can hear chip land on carpet. Ok hearing, can hear chip land on tiles... -

Responsibly Walking Entire Dog
Mrs Rusty Bucket replied to bristley's topic in General Dog Discussion
My mum always says my dog has extra Dalmatian in her - when my dog is being a bit "thick" or "independent minded". However for the longest time my mum refused to use any food in any kind of training with my dog - so my dog felt pretty much free to ignore anything my mum said. Mum's previous dog was a genius at human mind reading and really keen to please. Not this one - she's always looking for what's in it for her and pats and praise aren't always enough (my fault probably). I think the thing with high energy dogs, is that if you just take them for longer and longer exercise runs - you just get a fitter and fitter - but still bored dog. You have to wear out the brain as well. In fact time spent training the dog to do tricks will wear a dog out faster than the same amount of time just running and running... And if you really want to be sneaky about it, the tricks you train are to run around that pole over there, then this pole over here, then around the other way and back... ie lots of running and thinking - which is what agility is. :) -

well done, chi home finder team. :) I hope the original owner can manage the naughty dog she has left. -
everything on youtube by kikopup - Emily Larlham - can use the word "yes" if you can't stand the sound of the clicker - for most puppy skills. https://www.youtube.com/user/kikopup Crate training - Susan Garrett's dvd is still the best thing - tho with a puppy it might take more than one session to complete stage one and that's ok. http://www.agilityclick.com/prod157.htm
