  1. You could ask Steve for recommendations of who else might be able to help if he's full up. For starters he'd probably recommend triangle of temptation and NILIF. which would mean some initial barking and then hopefully an "extinction burst".
  2. The trouble is that some registered breeders look like puppy farmers from the outside and the local rep of the kennel club don't do anything about those. So not surprised Oscars law could look like anti all breeders.
  3. well done westiemum... May all foster placements be so easy. :)
  4. Or Breeding your bitch can give her permanent saggy tits. :) I usually ask a lot of "have you thought about" (this thing that can go wrong)... a few have changed their minds. Some have gone away. Some have gone away and come back later - declaring they've changed their minds deciding to leave breeding to the experts. And some - who are really keen on the idea have actually investigated more deeply and paired up with an established breeder who is doing the right thing to get started.
  5. I've seen both of these trainers recommended for Victoria. I don't know if "therapy dogs" are their thing, but they might be able to recommend someone who does this. In SA there is a dedicated group linked with the Golden Retriever club that trains therapy dogs - ie ones that can do hospital visits without getting freaked out if someone drops the dinner tray near them. If Judi and Julie can't help - I'd maybe ask the guide dog org if they know someone who trains therapy dogs. The type of therapy he's intending to use the dog for would also be helpful. There's so many different ways dogs help clients/patients these days but the training can be specific to the needs of the client-patient. Eg a PTSD patient probably needs something different to an autistic child - tho I could be wrong. Melbourne Erny (Judi Buchan) http://www.prok9.com.au/ Does Cranbourne, Frankston etc ie East Side. Nekhbet (Julie) http://inlinek9.webs.com/ Geelong based does up to Bendigo/Ballarat edit to remove confusing American term
  6. What's the bet it's the franchise with a name to match the problem.
  7. Lol Westiemum... You know where "keeping them all" leads. This way is much better and you know you're rehoming a really nice dog so no guilty feelings about dumping a grumpy bitch on some unsuspecting people either. It will all work out and now you have room to help another dog.
  8. Warning - link contains partner links to pictures of distressing animal cruelty. Yikes.
  9. In my area - I think the bats would have to fight the possums for the fruit at night time and the lorikeets during the day. We occasionly get large lost flocks? of fruit bats but they don't stay all that long - tho they do freak out whoever has the lucky host tree - often something with no fruit like a conifer (not pine cone season).
  10. Now is the perfect time for planting citrus and about 2 months after the perfect time for planting deciduous trees (eg stone fruit - apricots, peaches, cherries, pomme fruit - apples and pears) Cherries need a really decent dose of cold or they don't make fruit. So I'd start with a mandarin - and there are lots to choose from. One of the recent gardening Australia had a good story on it. And citrus do not like wet feet so they go best on mounded up soil... Depending how often it rains where you are. http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s4310556.htm You can try the other fruit, but they will do better if you wait till winter.
  11. what about "Spud" Why does that make me think of John Cornell from the Paul Hogan Show tho I think his character was "Strop" which might be misunderstood (Stroppie). PS https://www.facebook.com/OffTheLeashDailyDogCartoons?fref=ts One for hubby. There's another one that suggests naming the puppies "eat sleep poo"
  12. Ooh gotta come up with something ridiculous to annoy the husband. mind goes blank. "Brave Destroyer of Dack Croches" "Count of Clean Sweeping Coffee tables with mighty tail" "Detective Inspector of school bags for left over lunch" "All Conquering Couch Potato" I like this game too.
  13. Apples or banana? Any fruit in excess is going to be bad. If you just want shade - you can get ornamentals that don't have fruit.
  14. repel x I will have to check that out. Thank you. :) hmm Composition N, N-Diethyltoluamide 20g/L, Di-N-propyl isocinchomeronate 20g/L, N-Octyl Biccloheptene dicaroboximide 10g/L, Piperonyl Butoxide 8g/L, Citronella 5g/L, Pyrethrins 2g/L. Pyrethrins... bug killer. Same as fly spray with all natural ingredients. Aeroguard tropical strength Butane, Alcohol Denat., Diethyl Toluamide, Isopropyl Myristate, N-Octyl Bicycloheptene Dicarboximide, Fragrance (Amyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal, Isoeugenol, Citronellol, Coumarin, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool). Note - Diethyl Toluamide and N-Diethyltoluamide are different names for DEET (rid) ? I reckon repel-x would work really well but it's not any safer than the commercial personal (for humans) insect repellants. This info might be useful - kid safe insect repellent (recommends a low level of Deet) but kids don't lick themselves much. Mind you Rid is a good cure for licking. Taste Yuck Much. http://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Insect_repellents_guidelines_for_safe_use/
  15. Hi Jch80 Yes. Once you get the puppy home - some of the names will just not suit him at all. If you get to visit him before you bring him home - that may also help rule some of them out. Not a big fan of "Benson" - might as well call him ciggie cigarette. But it might be ok if you have a completely different story to tell when people ask why you called him that. Better than XXXX (beer) I guess. I like Darwin too - but you do realise that's an old pommie bloke with a really big beard... And don't forget to apply the "yell across the park" test. First few names for my dog failed. Eg Buckethead and Mrs Bucket - rhyme with something rude and possibly offensive if misunderstood. And Hyacinth (Mrs Bucket), you try yelling that across the park. Another name for gold - "nugget"... I know a few Aussies who have that as their nick name. There's also B1 and B2 (yellow bananas) :) What's the yellow wiggle's name?
  16. Getting Google maps locations etc changed is not as simple as it should be or you woudl think. From she would gets extremely frustrated!!! I think part of Oliver's problem is they don't have domain name and normal web page, only a FB page. So there's no where the text links up both names and addresses ie a history page. Or a steady reference for google, so when Sensis / Yellow pages does an update - the old company gets marked as closed - no longer trading - when it has only changed it's name. And why google thinks it is a poultry farm - tho it does sell chickens for urban chooks. It's not the same Ingam.
  17. Olivers on Morphett Road might have some. 8377 0223 Since they're right next to the racecourse you think they might have extra equestrian stuff. I just rang them and they do have equinade disinfectant stuff for cleaning. I also told them there was a bit of a problem with their google map listing. Oliver's grain and garden is "permanently closed" but Oliver's pets and plants is open in the exact same spot and phone number - go figure. Really don't want conflicting info on google when a business does a name change.
  18. Mine gets her own name a fair bit but also Smokey, snowy, evil hound, evil weevil, pumpkin, hairy legs (after a cousin's goldfish - only I remember that gold fish) or just Legs... PS and pucker-bum :) PPS - when you get the puppy home - the name will become apparent. Ie the dog chooses the name. Hence an Aussie Terrier named "Tracey" after a cyclone...
  19. Erm semantics? And definitely nit picking... Need a dummy spit :) Nit picking semantics can be fun.
  20. blond australian cricket players Cos they like catch - couldn't find any blond australian tennis players (they like tennis balls) apart from Leyton but google wouldn't play - coughed up lots of blond and female. ARGH. Warnie Shane (covers several of them) Clarkie Brettlee Thommo Most naughty dog name I know is "Fenton" but he's not Australian and you have to be careful when you call your dog something that reflects naughty ie that can be what you get - cos you expect that. Pick a better behaved name (so maybe not Warnie), and get better behaved dog, cos you expect a better behaved dog and are less likely to reward a naughty dog.
  21. I do love an update Westiemum Totally understandable that sometimes life gets in the way of DOL...
  22. True - but a few good fly traps and cleaning up the house yard might help reduce the population. If you're on a farm with livestock around (poo dispensing machines) - you will need the extra large fly traps (or make your own out of 2 litre soft drink bottles from the footy club - cos I don't drink the stuff). If I find a good fly repellent recipe I will let you know. There is a rather evil smelling plant called wormwood that is supposed to help repel insects, as are lavender and mint. I've not noticed much difference. I like lavender and mint but can't stand wormwood so I'm not planting any of that. http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s1872509.htm Ps the article mentions a plant with yellow flowers called Tansy - which can be rubbed on a dog or cat to help repell flies. But it is also a bit toxic. it might be related to the pyrethrum daisy that lots of "natural" bug killers are based on - but that's toxic too. You might as well use aeroguard as that. But planting in the garden or around the house paddock fence might help.
  23. catbrit you might want to ask your vet or the specialist if you decide to go to one - to submit the details of your puppy's ancestry (pedigree) to the LIDA database With a view to tracking this problem and perhaps preventing it in future Brittany Spaniels http://sydney.edu.au/vetscience/lida/dogs/ As far as I know most of the data on the problems by breed are from American information but hopefully more and more Australian information will become available. Your dog's breeder needs to be informed too. Some are really pleased to hear - with a view to avoiding future problems and some get angry and defensive - either way you should tell them and offer the vet details (copies of xrays or reports) if they want them.
