  1. Yes my 3 pointers kill EVERYTHING and I have found the tuffy toys to be fantastic too ! They have survived here for over a year now and though they are expensive to buy it is well worth the money. I did have a problem with the largest purple lobster, they ripped his head out but are still playing with the rest of him LOL !! The mega ring hasn't even so much as lost any stitching, they are brilliant ! Go Tuffy Toys
  2. Hi. I have flown dogs from Sydney to Qld on 3 separate occasions and once many years ago from Tokyo to Qld and each and every time I have used a pet transport company to organise the flight and crate. The domestic flights I booked through Dogtainers. I found them to be reasonable in price and you can hire the crate from them, they will do everything including door to door if that's what you require. The last one came only a couple of months ago and came on a Virgin flight but all booked and organised by Dogtainers.
  3. Hubby and I have already decided that we will have a greyhound as our " small white fluffy dog" that we will have in our old age , fantastic temperment and no having to bend down with what will be our old arthritic joints !! What could be better !
  4. Hi, I also have pointers and highly recomment having more than one. Pointers are very needy in wanting to be with their humans and I have found that mine keep each other occupied beautifully after I leave. I had 2 for a long time and now have 3 ! I think this breed of dog do very well in keeping each other company. Personally I wouldn't have a pointer on it's own unless I was home for most of the time. Good luck in working through the anxiety but honestly, my older boy cannot cope on his own and as soon as I got the second pointer all was well. Maybe consider giving a rescue pointer a home ?? My third boy is a rescue and is delightful.
  5. Well I don't really know the answer but when you have a really hot curry the side dish to calm the palete is a yoghurt based something so perhaps a natural yoghurt ?? Banana also works for humans too.
  6. Your post made me smile and think of my old german shepherd girl who we lost a couple of years ago. A smarter more obedient dog you would never find but when she was old......well, ALL requests made by me were considered carefully and more often than not ignored !! So I agree, enjoy the time and laugh at the antics, our old doggies are so wonderful and I think they have earned themselves a bit of relaxing of the rules at times.
  7. I love hippies. I became one as an experiment to see how quickly I could rationalise feeding an ethical natural genetically tortured soy bean to an omnivore. Obviously it's not working because I still think that given half a chance, my dogs would rip the stomach lining out of another animal in order to have an ethical natural life. Aussie, it's good to know you dont intend to make your dogs eat rabbit food. Even dogs in Auroville eat meat while chanting Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Peace, dude.
  8. Hi there, Yes I agree with the other posts here, you need to take a breath and CALM DOWN. If it were me the first thing I would do is get a second opinion and also get some weight off of her and then I would re assess after I had done all this. I think it's way too early to be thinking put to sleep yet. You must do something about her weight as a matter of urgency, instead of panicking about the treatments, surgery etc, the one thing you CAN do something about is start reducing her weight so she has a chance of better mobility and as others have said once she is normal weight she may not even need the surgery. I certainly wouldn't be putting her to sleep before all avenues had been tried. I had a german shepherd dog who had femur head removal surgery due to hip displaysia and we had another 8 wonderful years with her so it's not all doom and gloom, just calm down and take it one day at a time. Now I live in your area and I personally know the vet at Greenbank called The Bloomin Vet, he is a very caring experienced vet and might be worth going to for a second opinion. My shepherd was done by my regular vet with no problems but this was years ago now and maybe it is now passed on to specialists. .I am sure you could get good advice there also on her weight issue. Hope you find the right information and can get the results you hope for.
  9. Everything has been covered by the other posts on this thread but have you also checked your garden for plants that can cause a problem. I know someone else mentioned wandering jew etc but some ornamentals that you may have in there are also bad news. A friend had an itch problem for months and one day whilst visiting I saw plants that can cause itch. She removed them and the itching stopped. Just another avenue to look at. Hope you get on top of it.
  10. 70% PTS, that is so sad We actually lived in Japan many years ago for a few years and while we were there a stray dog wandered into where we were working. He was terribly terribly thin so we took him in and eventually brought him back to Australia with us. I remember at the time asking if we should advertise the dog was found and let the local pound know about it and we were told that would be pointless as it was a " thrown away" dog. Gun dog, hunting season was over and it was common for them to be " thrown away". THese dogs are often just a piece of hunting equipment . Many people there look after their dogs like a family member but others do not. Much the same as here really. You do have to remember that this is a completely different culture to ours and the thinking is different from us.I can totally believe that it is going to be very hard to change the thinking that pound dogs are second hand dogs. It saddens me they are having as big a problem as this. They are generally lovely people, I hope that something can be done to educate more on the responsibility of owning a pet and that it is for life. There are many places in the USA that are reported to have 70% put down rate from what I read and I am sure we have the same problem here too in some shelters and pounds. The one thing that concerned me the most from my observations whilst living in a semi-rural Japanese community were the amount of farm dogs who lived chained to their kennels. I used to get very upset seeing them out in the snow with only a small and often not very sturdy kennel for shelter. I do not know what the answers are, it seems that every country, including ours, is struggling with people not taking responibility for their pets.
  11. Metacam is an anti inflammatory that you would need to get on prescription from your vet. There is an equivalent human form but speak to your vet first. I was very reluctant to use it regularly initially as it can have some nasty side effects (as any anti inflammatory can) but in my boy's case, it has given him great quality of life and I am so grateful to my vet for persisting in changing my mind about giving it daily. Just a quick word on my experience with using Metacam . I had a rescue German shepherd for 10 years who came to us with hip displaysia. She had surgery and also had to go on to Metacam to manage her ongoing pain with her other hip. She was on it daily for 6 years with no ill effects at all, in fact it enabled her to have a quality of life she would not otherwise have been able to have, so to any of you who have to use it daily and worry about doing so, please take heart that for some dogs it is a godsend with no big problems with using it. The only problem that we ever had with it was the price
  12. Have posted on his blog. Wish there was a pound for bad men that we could put him in !
  13. I agree, no animals should be re homed unless desexed.
  14. No it's quite different. First tender in does not necessarily get the dog, the HIGHEST tender gets the dog so you can be the last one to tender and still get the dog if yours is the highest bid. The dog or cat does not go to what may be the best home for them, they go to the highest bidder and as they have no desexing policy there the puppy farmers are bidding on the purebred entire dogs. The ballot is secret so even if a person is prepared to outbid an unsuitable home there is no way of knowing who is offering the highest money or even what the highest money IS. It's like a raffle for live animals.
  15. Thanks for the feedback, I will start saving, sounds like they may be just the thing. I have american friends and they can buy them over there for $85, wish they were that price here LOL !!
  16. Yes 16paws, they are the ones I was refering to. Thanks for the feedback. May I ask please how bad your dogs were as far as chewing goes ? I have to buy 3 beds YIKES !! and xlarge too so costly !! Seems to be the covers that mine like so much and they look to be good in that department from what I can see.
  17. Anyone used the aluminium framed chew proof beds advertised on here that come from the USA ? ( not sure if I can name them ?) They are expensive and I don't mind paying it if they deliver what they say they do in regards to being tough for chewers to access.
  18. Woohooo ! ....now if we could only get QLD to move out of the dark ages.....
  19. Get a Capstar tablet from the vet, it will kill the existing fleas that are still on her , and that will give the other product time to work. I always use a capstar first for any dog coming onto my place and then Advantage or similiar.
  20. Oh you lucky lucky thing !! Badger is gorgeous, just like the pointer of my dreams !! Will look forward to seeing pics of him as he grows. I have 3 pointers and they are totally addictive LOL !!
  21. Doesn't take in strays ?? So the stray pointer I adopted from them 5 weeks ago , what is he then, temporarily homeless ? between homes ? He was a stray taken in by them !! Are you sure? Watch out - they might be back for him to gain some media attention!!!!! :D :D

  23. Hi, I have 3 pointers and they are outside when I am at work with what sounds like much the same set up as you have, good fencing and pergola covered area for shelter. Mine are 6yrs, 3yrs, and 10 months and apart from wrecking the garden and the excavation work they do, they so far have been fine LOL !!! I seriously doubt that a 4 month old pointer will sleep the whole time while in the house, it will find something to amuse itself ! Very active buggers that they are LOL !!! My yard is unable to be seen by passers by but I still padlock the front gate just in case. Dont be worried, it sounds like you are well set up and the pup will be fine. I always do a fence walk when I get home to make sure none of the excavations are near the fence line ! Good luck with your pup.
  24. Good on you for acting quickly !! There is an old saying........ Bad things happen when good people do nothing.....well done on doing something about it. Should be more people like you. Cheers.
