  1. Hmmmmm.....police were called on him because of domestic violence....then he attacked police so they set the dog to work.....then he attacked the dog.....Lo Pan, if that's not a loser I don't know what is.
  2. Hi Darlingdog, thank you. How much is a good amount of exercise for a Pointer? EFS An hour a day would be fine as long as they can run and I mean really run, 2 or 3 times a week within that exercise. We live on an acre so they can run at home but previous to this we were on a small block and they managed with walking each day and going to park for running as well. 2 of my pointers NEED the run, the other one would be fine without it. They are the loveliest dogs, so gentle, very affectionate.
  3. Pointer ! (english) so long as she is aware that if they don't get enough exercise they can be destructive. If she likes Springers she just might like pointers and they are a drip dry dog though they do shed tiny white hairs.
  4. Yes I also say Tuffy Toys, been a dogsend at my place  ! Mine killed the Kong wubba in 15 minutes too but the 3 tuffy toys we have here have been with us for over a year. Highly recommend them. They are more expensive to buy but worth the money.
  5. I would not leave my dogs no matter what the authorities wanted me to do so I'd have to stay.
  6. My Mother-in-law came from a similar cultural background. She never "got it". When her old dog was in pain and was ready to go to the bridge, the vet even came to the house to try to convince her to let him do it! THAT is how bad it was! In exasperation I asked her "WHY?" "Why won't you let the vet do the kind thing for your dog" "He's even left his busy practice to help you out here and not many will do that. Why?" Her answer? "I love him too much." Yes- everyone in the family was saying how the loving thing was to put him put of his misery - they had said it before I even got to that point. But she still insisted it was because she "loved him". Kindest thing seems to be the council option. Let me clarify as I realise that I wasn't clear in my last post, I have no problem with an old dog being put down if that is the kindest and best thing to do for the dog. I am sure that all on this forum would do the right thing by our dogs when the time came but taking an old dog out of his home environment to a scary pound just to be put down is not the best outcome for that dog. In an ideal world that would happen in the environment most familiar for the dog but as we all know this is not an ideal world.
  7. Oh that breaks my heart to hear that. I have 3 pointers and I hate to hear that an old dog is not being cared for properly . Thank you for stopping to see if you could help . I hope the pound don't take him and put him down. He or she deserves better than that. I wonder if the old woman just needs a helping hand in looking after the dog ? Do they realise how thin it is ? Sometimes old people need some help to look after their animals.
  8. I'm pretty sure that is not her FB page, looks like something a sick indivudual has put up to ride on the wave of indignation her video has caused. I have reported all the pics on it, not sure if that will get any action from FB in terms of shutting it down. They don't seem to have a good track record in that regard.
  9. Post the link, I have no probs with posting a comment !
  10. Years ago we had a female rottweiler who loved to swim. We HAD to keep a long lead on her in the water otherwise she would swim out into the deep water chanel way off shore and try to chase speed boats !!

  12. Well I'm a local and I have few problems with most of the proposed new laws. Lets remember that they are calling for public input, these laws are not yet set in stone. Having lived next door to roosters and cockatoos where the noise factor is a big problem I think it's appropriate that they be housed on bigger blocks. I already have to pay a special licence fee to have my third dog and it's not a yearly fee, it's a one off fee for the life of that dog so maybe this is the sort of thing they will look at. Those that have a big problem with what is being proposed just have to be sure they lobby the council and make their feelings heard loud and clear. Certainly in regards to keeping my dogs Logan council has been a lot more dog friendly than the previous Beaudesert Shire in that now I can keep 4 dogs ( with licence), previously I could only keep 2.
  13. Are you able to run an electric fence wire or 2 along the shared boundary with your neighbour ? That would keep them out. I know it's an expense for you but better than relying on the neighbour. I know it's not your responsibility but at least it would fix the problem without causing more potential problems with the neighbours and everyone can move on.
  14. Yes I have had to ask that question ! We have a proper garden hose hanger attached to the wall of the house and the hose is hung against the wall nice and neatly. The first time I went out after we had got the new pointer who was one year at the time, I came home to no dogs at the gate so as I got out of the car I was worried and thinking uh oh and then as soon as he heard me at the gate he started screaming his head off and I of course thought he had half killed himself. I rushed to the back of the house to find him with the garden hose around his tummy and he was hanging on the wall with his legs running for all they were worth in mid air ! I was laughing so hard it was really difficult to get him down ! I have NO IDEA how he got there !
  15. I have 3 pointers. My youngest is NEVER still unless he's asleep ! Running, hunting lizards, bees, butterflys, birds....running, gardening, digging....running, throw toys around, more digging, annoy second brother.....running, stir both brothers up and get all of them running, rip up bed, jump in pool and swim as now very hot from all running.....and...repeat until it's time for dinner....then inside, cuddle mum and dad, chew up teddy.....sleep.
  16. HI Joel, I have 3 english pointers and can't recommend them highly enough. Lovely lovely breed, very affectionate, very funny and sometimes very destructive in the teen years LOL !! If you were to decide on this breed just wanted to say there is one in the Melbourne Lost dogs home at the moment. Might be worth a look. All the best with whatever you decide to get.
  17. As you say you have suggested another dog perhaps it would help them if you suggest a rescue dog ? Explain to them that the rescue dog would be feeling much like they do after losing their family and having no one in the world to look after them and love them. This might make the kids feel better and like they are doing something to help a dog feel better ? Also assure them that even though they get another dog that if the original dog is ever found that of course you will welcome it back and how lovely for it to have a doggy brother or sister there if you take in the rescue. Just one way of looking at things. All the best to your children.
  18. with absolute respect and not trying to be rude (things can come across as such on a forum-and i really don't want to be misunderstood ), i think that is pretty naive aussielover. resuce orgs will not take on a HA dog, but more importantly by keeping this dog with a child you can be not only endangering the child physically but also mentally scarring it for life. i live with a phobia and wouldn't wish it on anyone. it doesn't take much to give children serious fears and phobias and the longer this pup lives with a child the more likely it is that some damage will be done. "it is only fair" to get this poor pup, who is probably scared out of its mind and freaking out, humanely euth'ed. after all, professionals on this forum don't need to know a whole lot more about the pup that the behaviour described-if they were trying to rehab it, of course they would need mounds more info, but to make an assesment on the best option for the dog and the family? that one is easy, take it to the vet and put it down. it is in the best interests of the dog, the parents and the child. i feel really sorry for the people who took this dog on, yes they were silly, but someone palmed off a sad situation onto them and now they have to do the hard thing. jeeze, people can really suck sometimes, can't they? I know you're not trying to be rude But my point is, we are making recommendations to PTS based on second hand information, obviously i'm not saying the OP is lying but the owner could certainly be exaggerating or even misinterpreting the situations. Very few here are qualified behaviourists and I doubt that a qualified behaviourist or great dog trainer would assess such a situation based on online, second hand info. Again, not trying to be rude, but I think you're quite wrong about professionals not needing to know more than what has been said here on the forum. In my opinion the responsible thing to do was get the dog assessed ASAP. I'm not saying its wrong to PTS. Also, in light of the new info regarding the lump on the head- a trip to the vet is required! Howver, I also accept the fact the the decision is up to the owner, I am disappointed to hear they will not get the puppy professionally assessed. Hopefully the person they manage to pass it on to will be able to help the poor thing more Yes I agree with your suggestion to first get the pup professionally assessed before jumping on the PTS solution. In my opinion someone who was naive enough to be conned like this in the first place is not the most reliable judge of a pup's character, just saying...........
  19. Done. Great job in getting the other one rejected. Good on you all.
  20. Hi, sorry to hear your boy has had pancreatitis. I have no experience of dogs with this but as a human survivor of pancreatitis myself I thought I could offer you a tip that works for me in the meat department. I have found that I can tolerate small amounts of kangaroo fillet. It's very lean and it might be worth a try for your boy. Good luck with managing him, the pain from this condition when it's acute is such that you really think you might die so Ivan has my utmost sympathy !!!!
  21. Hi, One of mine had ringworm and it did not have a scab, was round red bald patches. If it is ringworm then it can take awhile to clear up. My rescue came to me with ringworm ( we knew he had it before we took him) and it took about 3 months to clear. We used human antifungal cream for ringworm ( ask the chemist). 3 times a day I would wipe over with betadine and then apply cream and 3 times a week I washed those areas with Malaseb, leave on for 10 mins, wash off and dry thoroughly. He was not in the best condition so I believe it took so long to clear because his immune system wasn't so great at the time. We didn't catch it due to being very diligent with washing hands after handling him but one of my other dogs did catch it but on him it cleared up in a few days due to him being very healthy I am assuming. Like with lots of things some people and dogs are more likely to catch it than others. Get on to it early and be CONSISTANT with the treatment. Good luck, hoping you don't have it !
  22. Electric fence top and bottom just as others on here have suggested. No collar then needed if you are worried about it catching on things. Trim back all shrubs etc so wire is unobstructed. We did this on our acre and my pointers never get out. We keep the fence on ALL the time. Best of luck.
  23. My pointers have to get more food in winter otherwise they too lose weight. I feed twice daily and they get fresh lamb flaps everyday and that seems to do the trick.
  24. I sometimes have used a tin of oily fish and that has helped. Hope he gets 'moving' soon!
  25. Yes one of my dogs did the same with my father-inlaw. He knew him well and was never any problem but on the last visit he made to our house my dog sat about one metre away from him and just kept barking at him and wouldn't go near him or let him touch him. One week later my father-inlaw was hospitalised with Parkinson's previously not diagnosed . Maybe your dog is sensing something is amiss ??
