  1. A farmer who lives near me in Kyabram where there is irrigation channels on his property keeps geese and a turkey he said he's never had a snake on his property since he's had the geese and the turkey! and the geese he says are cheap guard dogs also
  2. 3. It brings it all back every time I read of another little dog getting killed in a dog attack. Now what's the bet the owners get a slap on the wrist and get their dogs back as per usual. My heart goes out to this poor lady and I know from my experience that you never get over seeing you're beloved pet killed in front of your eyes no matter how many years pass.
  4. I rent and I have 2 small dogs and have never had a problem finding a place that will let me have my dogs! But I'm in a country town in vic so maybe different in suburbs though!
  5. I've always adopted from shelters I've always like the scruffy terrier x type dogs so that is what I look for and this little girl in pic here "Lady" I adopted nearly 12 years ago after my previous similar girl was killed in a dog attack; but I've always felt that Lady chose me rather than I chose her! she is an old girl of around 16 now but has been the most loving little dog and really helped heal my broken heart after my other girl was killed in the dog attack. And I might be biased but I think she is beautiful!
  6. Dunno about a character, she's a very spoilt n demanding old girl these days, but I love her to bits Dementia n all come 3 o'clock and she starts the bark for I want my dinner esp weekends when I'm home and weekdays If I get home from work around 4- 4.30 and If I go and feed my horse first Lady goes crook at me and barks non stop until I come in and get her dinner! I know who's the boss in this house and it isn't me that's for sure!. She's always had some strange ways about her like when I moved to the country after living in melb suburbs, would she walk on dirt roads (NO) I had to take her in car into town or to a park that had pavement for her to walk on she'd just refuse to walk on dirt or gravel country roads, guess you can take the dog out of the city but you can't take the city out of the dog . A previous landlord where I was renting once asked me "If I thought she knew she was a dog"? To which I replied "Ssssshhh I haven't told her yet" Honestly what would be all do if we didn't have our animals to make us laugh I think I would of had a breakdown years ago if I didn't have mine to make me laugh at the funny things they do!
  7. Yeah is funny what dogs like and dislike, I was visiting a friends place couple of years ago who has a couple of Shelties, all lovely dogs but NO Lady wouldn't have a bar of them either, and at the same time friends brother was there with his Kelpie and Lady was happy to interact with the Kelpie but not the Shelties, Is hard to figure out what dogs she likes and dislikes. A former neighbour owned a GSHP and she also loved this dog to play with even though it bowled her over and was so much bigger than her, I guess perhaps dogs are not unlike us people that perhaps first impressions count for them also, I know when I first meet someone if they are my cup of tea or not so maybe dogs are the same but would love to know what goes on in their heads thats for sure! But I know one thing for sure that she won't have a bar of my SWF dog even though hes very good and worships the ground she walks on if he comes inside after going out to toilet and she's still outside he goes back to door and waits for her and wags his tail and sticks his nose out to her but she completely ignores him and looks other way like If I can't see him he doesn't exist lol! she also barks at him if he's on couch having a cuddle from me or if he's on couch and she's on floor will bark at him until he gets off then she's happy lol! (I tell her she's an old grouch), I'm lucky in the fact that the swf keeps to himself is happy to entertain himself with his toys and doesn't annoy her or crowd her in any way he learnt that when he first came to me after getting snapped at a few times from 'old grumpy bum'.
  8. Well my old girl Lady made me laugh so much today, Driving home from work this aft I saw a whippet running along my road and pulled over as I didn't want to see it get hit as its quite a busy road with lot of milk tankers etc, was a very friendly dog happy to jump in my car and come home with me, did not have collar so didn't know who he belonged to but thought it has to be a farm near where he was running along road. Anyway took him home so I could get changed and ring a few people I know in my area and my old dog Lady saw him through the sliding door and wanted out. I went and got a spare collar and lead and put on him just in case he wasn't dog friendly but was fine. Well Lady danced around him wiggled her bum at him and squeaked and bounced like she was flirting with him and when I let him off the lead they played in the front yard for about 5 mins before Lady decided she'd had enough then sat down next to him and wouldn't come inside. Now I find this really funny as I have a male maltese x shih tzu and she will not have a bar of him wont even acknowledge he exists and if he tries to play with her he gets grumped at she obviously likes bigger dogs which makes me wonder if whoever owned her before I got her perhaps had a bigger dog as well but it just made me laugh as she is around 16-17 years old and is very arthritic these days but can obviously still turn it on when she wants to. Oh and did find owner of dog who was very grateful that I rescued him off road apparently he'd gone up to the shops and his mother left door open and didn't realize the dog had got out, I think my old dog Lady wasn't happy that her new friend went away.
  9. My Angel "Lady" is just that my Angel as she came to me in a dream I had not long after my previous little dog had been killed in a dog attack. I was still an emotional wreck and at the time I wasn't ready for another dog and hadn't given a thought to getting another 1 so soon until I felt emotionally ready but I woke up one morning and had a very strong urge that I had to go to rspca that there was a little dog there waiting for me and there she was and as her time was up she was due to be PTS the next day. I truly believe she was sent to me to help heal my emotional trauma and perhaps she had a guardian angel watching over her also and now she is around 16/17 I know her time will be up soon and again I will be an emotional wreck but I cherish every single day I've had with her MY LITTLE ANGEL "LADY"
  10. I'm in northern vic and my vet recommends yearly vacs as he said they see a lot of parvo up here, but he said it's entirely up to me but said u dont see a lot of parvo in the melb suburbs so the 3 year would be ok.
  11. I did just that today had him outside on long lead and asked my neighbor/landlord to come in through side gate about 6 times within space of cpl mins apart, and as soon as J started barking I told him NO and he stopped straight away and I gave him a treat, (he's not as dumb as I thought) after landlord coming back 3 times he gave a half hearted woof then stopped and looked at me like well where's my treat . the last couple of times I took lead off and just let him run around back yard and he happily sat near side gate and just watched landlord work in garden and when he came back through the gate the last time he just wagged his tail and went up for pat. Landlord said that when he's outside J will bark couple of times only then stops, that he doesn't continually bark which is what I thought he was doing so I'm very relieved about that, and thanks to the people who gave helpful advice much appreciated! BUT THINK I'LL PASS ON THE HAVE HIM DEBARKED COMMENT!
  12. He gets walked for 1/2 hour every night after I come home from work but prior to me been given him 8 months ago he had lived with an elderly lady since he was 8 weeks of age and wasn't walked or taken out anywhere only lived inside and only other dogs he saw was the one from next door who used to come in and play with him, since I've had him I've taken out for walks with my friends and their dogs, and been to numerous outings where there have been other dogs also and he's fine he doesn't bark at all is just at home seems to be a dominance thing perhaps with him and other dogs near his territory!, No he isn't treated like a toy by me that's for sure, since I've had him I've taught to sit and wait till i put his dinner down and tell him he can have it and sit before we cross road, I think his former owner probably did treat him more like a doll not a dog as when I told her he sits and waits for his dinner etc she said she never taught him anything except to sit on her lap and be groomed so at least he likes being groomed and clipped. I guess it will just take time for him to learn new boundaries seeing as he's obviously never been taught any.
  13. A Maltese is not a terrier at all. They're in Group 1 (Toys). Terriers are Group 2 Thanks for that info, Is something I obviously didn't know as everyone I've ever spoken to has referred to him as a maltese terrier and is very interesting to know that even the so called expert dog trainer was wrong.
  14. A Maltese is a terrier breed, trainer said he wasn't a shih tzu cross in his opinion just a maltese and that these dogs are renown for being little yappers was his comment!. His former owner told me he used to bark whenever anyone walked past her place but she just ignored him as she thought he was being such a good little watch dog! Don't think a SWF would scare anyone, hopefully as he's only 3 I can train him out of it.
  15. Thanks for your reply, I have done this when I've been inside when he starts barking and he responds quick, but problem is mainly when I'm outside doing something on farm and he starts barking at landlord or his dog through window, If I stop what I'm doing and go tell him Quiet he stops but the min I walk away he starts again, I've been putting him in back bedroom with door closed and curtains closed so he cant see out if I'm working around farm but I feel really mean, but will def try the clicker training and treat at same time, may even get landlord to come and go outside and do this as it may help reinforce it. Thanks again for your helpful advice.
  16. My male maltese x shih tzu I acquired 8 months ago has settled in well but his barking at absolutely everything and anything is driving me up the wall, like the landlord who's house is over other side of fence from mine J will still bark when he sees him outside, or when horse runs around paddock he barks at her, if anyone walks past he barks, he even barks when he sees neighbor driving up side road to their place, It is driving me crazy as I've never ever had a barker, my old girl lady would only bark when she was younger if someone came onto property but this maltese x is beginning to really be a pain in the butt, I asked a dog trainer who was at rspca paws walk in Shepparton and his response was "He's a terrier you will never get him out of it"! I've had terrier x breeds all my life and have never ever had a barker. No matter how many times I tell him no bark or quiet, he just doesn't seem to get it, he even barks at me when I'm outside if he hears me and hasn't seen me go out, I don't want to fall foul of the landlord with him living so close he hasn't said anything but I now it would drive me up the wall if his dog was barking at me all the time whenever I was outside. Is there anyway I can get him out of this as he's a great little dog otherwise!
  17. Whenever someone says to me so what type of dog is that mongrel referring to my beautiful old girl Lady I keep a straight face and reply ever so sincerely 'Excuse me but she isn't a mongrel in fact she's a new breed called a 'Bolshoi Terrier' they are very rare you know. Is so very hard to keep straight face but you can see them thinking is she yanking my chain or is she for real, even if they ask if I'm joking I say 'No' figure if they want to be rude then they can cop some crap back, yes all my dogs I've ever owned have been the good old hi bred vigor mongrels but I wouldn't of traded any of em for a million bucks or for any other dog if it was offered to me. Mongrel indeed! I think she's just beautiful.
  18. Awww thanks everyone for your nice comments, she has always been my little angel, but is more of a devil these days think she has dementia and barks if I'm not in same room as her or if she can't see me seems to get a bit confused these days and her eye sight isn't that good now and is on monthly Cartrophen injections for her arthritis and is very tottery on her little legs now as well and doesn't want to go for walks anymore either, but she's still eating ok as I still have to count all my fingers when I give her a smackos She's lying on her bean bag bed on floor next to my computer asleep with a blanket over her and is covered up with a blanket where she sleeps on my bed of a night also I have 1 long cushion at base of bed on floor with another 2 on top at 1 end so she can get up on my bed and get down again and doesn't move until it's time to get up in the morning, (Yep life's certainly been tough for this little Lady)! :D
  19. Just thought I'd pop in here and post a pic of my old girl 'Lady' who is around 16 or 17 years of age don't know exactly as she was a shelter dog from rspca burwood 11 years ago and according to them she was 8 but my vet said she was no older than 5 or 6 so has to be at least 16. she was sitting on one of her beds in computer room this afternoon and had such a cute look on her face I couldn't resist taking her photo, I feel so very blessed as each day comes around that she is still here and I get to spend another day with her.
  20. When my Dad was in Palliative care before he passed away, he was telling nurses about my little dog and how lovely Lady was etc etc, the nurse told me that I could bring Lady in to the hospital that animals were often brought in if they were well behaved and on a lead or cats in cages etc. So every day for the 2 weeks before he died Lady came to the hospital and sat on the bed with him or curled up in a chair in the room she was very comfy. One of the nurses asked me if she could take Lady around to visit some of the other patients who liked dogs but unfortunately she got as far as the door and Lady hit the brakes "I'm not going anywhere without my mum", so off I went with the nurse to a few patients rooms so they could have a pat and a cuddle you could see it lifted their spirits. My brother was horrified that I'd take the dog in to the hospital he just didn't get it really.
  21. I recently discussed this with my vet up here in northern country vic, his response was "It's entirely up to you", he said he didn't feel it was necessary for people living in and around suburbs of Melb as there doesn't seem to be parvo outbreaks in the city, but up here in country vic he said they do see a lot of it especially from dogs living on or near orchards and for the cost of treating a dog with parvo compared to the cost of the vaccinations he knows what he'd choose but doesn't push for yearly vaccinations if owners only want 3 yearly. So am still none the wiser if I should get my 3 year old maltese x shihtzu done as he is due for yearly vaccinations next month, I haven't bothered with my old dog of 16 lady this year as she doesn't go out for walks now and always seems to have reactions to vaccinations and is a bit off colour for couple of days. My friends vet in Rochester told her he'd go with the vaccinations this year with her 2 young dogs then wait the 3 years, but again said they do see a lot of parvo outbreaks up here so I guess it's a risk you have to weigh up according to if your vet as to if there is much parvo in your area.
  22. I also just ordered 1, have thought about this a lot as my 2 little dogs are always inside in the lounge room/kitchen during day time when I'm at work, our local CFA unit is directly across road from my driveway but the guys have still gotta get there. Of a night time I take my handbag which has my wallet and car keys & my 2 dogs collars and leads and put in my bedroom of and shut bedroom and hallway door so the dogs have to stay in bedroom as that way I'd know where they were if ever a fire did happen of a night and I'd open sliding window push fly screen out and lower dogs to safety and climb out after them is only about 3 feet off the ground so not far to jump out if needed.
  23. Bloody Sick Bastards, I hope they find them and should do exactly same to them I'd tie em up in main street and let puppy's owners belt crap out of em with a stake, you gotta wonder about the mentality of some people!
  24. I used to take my old girl Lady to work with me as I work as a personal care worker going into old people's homes and helping them with their daily activities etc but they were giving her too many sweet biscuits etc and then she was barking at them wanting more all the time and was getting too fat so don't take her anymore lol!.
  25. I knew I shouldn't of popped in here in my lunch break from work, now my eyes are all teary and red. I'll tell em I have hay fever ! Jed you truly are a very remarkable woman and I'm sure you've heard this many times but with your way with words and your beautiful tribute to your darling but a bit wicked Magnus you should write a book about your animals and their little quirks etc it would be a best seller world wide. Jed I hope you continue to be stronger each day and the pain is getting less, thanks for sharing such a beautiful story he truly was a very unique dog.
