  1. And this is precisely why I DON'T go to 'dog parks'. Thats fair enough and I would expect other people who dont want their dogs to be greeted by other dogs to also stay away from dog parks, there are plenty of parks that are not designated dog parks where they could take their dogs.
  2. Here in Perth on a sunday the Guide Dogs are taken to a park and are all allowed to run around and have a play together, they run a lot but are not aggressive and overly rough - just a joy to watch them relax after a hard working week.
  3. Does she look at you if you clap, whistle or call her name?? If she does as soon as she looks at you, wave your arms like crazy and call her name while spinning around and running away from her - worked like a charm for some of the people at our club who had trouble with recalls.
  4. Way to go Daisy I will cry with happiness when Mason can perform like that amid loads of distractions!!
  5. I take my hat off to working dogs, some people's lives would be much more difficult without them, their willingness to please makes labs wonderful service dogs
  6. Is this from CleanRun? I saw that and was hoping it would have free shipping, wanted to order it too! Do you mind me asking how much it cost you including shipping, and where from? I got mine from Air Dogs but it seems to be missing off their website now so maybe they sold out. It was about $45 with postage. Great minds think alike. I am thinking or re-training Toby using the method and training Lincoln using it, we can work through it togther on Thursdays. You guys should share your book and loan a copy to me and Amy I would also like to see it Valley I like the idea of a training club
  7. Agreed!! Very often many other breeds run up to my dog, he will have a play with dog and when I call him back he will come to me whereas loads of other dogs just ignore their owners .......
  8. Maybe he did slip his collar as he could have had both a harness and a collar on??
  9. I disagree, my lab wouldnt "eat it" he would play gently - he plays with my cat and she weighs 3kg.
  10. Holistic Select doesnt contain wheat or gluten, my boy is on this food because I dont feed him wheat or gluten due to yeast infections
  11. I got mine from crazysales.com.au. Just go on there and do a search, it'll come up quickly It was $17.99. That sounds awesome thanks!
  12. I also prefer to let my dog play with dogs I know
  13. Although I must say i love goldies too they are very special dogs
  14. Any dog can be aggressive and many are just down right rude, and yes Labs have been surrendered to our pound for both HA and DA and just like any other breed, and as long as people buy breeds like this thinking they have to do no training because they are the "perfect family Dog" and they have no need to put anything in to them they will continue this way. I agree with you they do need training just like ANY other dog, they are not a magic breed of dog that are born fully trained to sit, drop and come on recall- there are no such dogs.
  15. I dont mind if we leave after the 3hrs, I have rental inspection on Tuesday and I am working monday so sunday is my only time to springclean. I am off work today with the flu....
  16. :mad the OP's dog is a rude dog and I can't fathom why they think it it ok to behave this way The OP was on here asking for advice so I really dont think that your comment was necessary if she felt that his behaviour was fine she wouldnt be asking for advice now would she???
  17. My lab was chased by 5 chihuauas ( spelling?) today at the dog park, he was running away from them as they were growling at him and trying to bite his legs, while running away from them he took such care that even when they were running underneath him he never once stepped on them - obviously these dogs didnt get the memo that labs can be dangerous and aggressive
  18. Little, old dogs are just as entitled to use dog parks as big, bouncy boofs. It all comes down to responsibility for your dog. I wouldn't like a bouncy boofhead to approach my Mini Foxie willy nilly. She's a friendly, social, little dog (who is not old) but she shouldn't have to cope with rambunctious dogs just because 'they are friendly'. No dog deserves to be bowled over or stood on but I am saying its a risk you take as accidents can happen anywhere and I dont think its fair that labs always get the blame because there are other large breeds out there who do run up to other dogs just as energetically!.
  19. I wish! But I can't not miss my Saturday shift the night before, plus I let a big note on the notice board asking of anyone wanted to swap so it might look suss (apparently everyone has a life and will be out partying Saturday night :D :D ) You guys will have to absorb all the info and relay it back to me! I might try go to watch another trial at some stage with Lincoln. Its a pity you cant make it, I turned down a job as I was going to have to work every single saturday, I just couldnt be bothered
  20. Warning: A Rant There have been so many posts on annoying out of control yappy aggressive little dogs. I thought I'd offer "The little dog POV ..." Playful bouncy young labs are among the most dangerous dogs for my old chi cross. He has luxating patellas and a bad back. One playful knock would mean not only pain but quite likely the need for surgery. Even when I keep him on lead and tell the owners of these dogs that he does not like labs or that he may get hurt, they insist their dogs are friendly. When I pick him up to keep him out of their way, they lecture me on how bad it is to pick up small dogs--it makes them aggressive, etc, etc. However, when my dog is in obedience classes with well trained labs in a controlled situation he shows no aggression at all towards them. He'll sit next to a lab in long stays. He'll act as 'a post' and allow the labs to weave around him. We rarely go to off lead areas but even owners with onlead dogs want to force my dog to socialise with their dogs or want to "cure" my dog of his discomfort with bouncy young dogs by forcing him to interact. It drives me nuts. Di I think by naming labs as a "dangerous" dog for your old boy is being a bit unfair, ALL of the large breed dogs would be a danger for him then such as ridgebacks, great danes, boxers, they are all large and high energy. The only reason that labs get picked on is that there are so many of them around. Personally if i had an old dog I would never take them to an off lead park because accidents do happen , a dog could be running for his own ball and step on your oldie by mistake.
  21. My best experience this guy with a muzzled german shepherd walking in my neighbourhood offlead I am walking mine onlead - his dog jumps on mine, pins him to the floor and my dog is yelping and trying to get away he says to me ' he is just dominant he would never hurt him " - WHATEVER!!
  22. Yep, Masons Mom and I are going :D Are you?? :D I hate my job! :D Do you work every sunday?
