RIP Sam my old man, had you 12 years this year and loved every moment, went through loads of stuff together and will remember you for ever!!

Thanks Rubystar, going to go check my account to see if this months has come off, I always double check that it has though as I often have claims in. We will stay with Petplan due to the fact that his allergies wont be covered if we move but also because they were the only ones willing to consider covering his tear ducts in 24 months if he has had no other eye issues....

BIG Congratulations Mas1981. So when does agility training start??? It started last night, we joined the class after assessment we learnt rear crosses, forward crosses, running recall ( these are probably not what the exercises are called as I dont know their proper names). It was a lot of fun, we will get to go on the equipment next week.

I was so proud of my child tonight, he passed the agility assessment and did not run off once tonight to greet other dogs

My lab is purebreed but I often get asked at the park by ignorant people " your dog is lovely, what breed is he" I reply " he is a labrador" they reply " but he is so skinny for a lab" I say " no he is actually not thin at all he is just fit" they then say " I did not know they come in black i thought they only come in gold " I then say nothing and walk away..................

I think for the stays I must be aware of what foot I am stepping off on - Mason is observant and maybe I am somehow confusing him...
-
When I got my pup, the 2 most important things were recall and focus, we are still working on the 2nd one

Its only a case of teaching them the new cue - he must know what wait means but to him at this point in time sit doesn't mean wait. PSST - just because the rest of the class uses sit and wait doesn't mean you have to. An example of this is "bang" on the see-saw - everybody used to use touch, contact or wait and then one person used "bang" and now lots of people do. Lol, I know, Mason can be blonde at times Anyway I am leaving my stays for this week, and we are starting beginners agility tonight if he passes the assessment so all hold thumbs pls, he has to complete a number of exercises off lead. G is also not too stressed about the sit stay we will probably work on it more when he comes back.
-
We used to just use position commands but then in this class we have been taught to tell them to wait or stay. If I dont say wait he will move when he feels like it. With his SFE I tell him to wait and walk away and he does not move a paw so he must enjoy standing

If i had to go dry I would go with Holistic Select

To Puppy Class Or Not To Puppy Class?
Mas1981 replied to RealityBites's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I liked puppy class as they get to meet and interact with dogs their own age, it was important for me as he was going to be an only dog. -
Consider this a slap (bugger I don;t have access to all the extra emoticons ) You are being negative - Rubystar will tell you we don't do negative You have not broken it down small enough pieces to fix the problem You must have lumped This is not a dog problem but a handler one ;) Go to the back of the class and come back when you are little Miss Positive please xx PS - perhaps you need to post what is happening, how you have tried to fix it, and ask for some suggestions on where to go from here I am actually avoiding the sit stay issue at the moment as whatever I do seems to make it worse, I went back to basics after it started happening and I taught him stays from scratch using a different word, i stood right in front of him for a very short time, treated, went a bit further etc, then jackpoted ( eeekkk how do u spell that) - then his stays were fine for about 2 weeks and when I asked him to stay in our special group he started lying down again. I am going to be brutally honest here and say that I probably dont practice stays as much as I should, I do the other stuff way more than stays and even less now because his laying down makes me feel like I have done something wrong - which I probably have in all honesty as I dont have great handling skills. Hubby recons he sits for awhile and then when I dont call him like I do for a recall he gets bored and lays down?? I also believe that he is lazy and when he realises he cant move he just lays down, he had a beautiful sit stay before so I do think that he knows what a sit stay is, he is just too lazy to sit there and wait - either way if he knows it or not I have to find a way to fix it. I have been lucky so far as I think he has been a pretty easy dog to train so this is a nice challenge in a way.

Thankyou :D I was very pleased that Ruby maintained enthusiasm with 3 trials in one day, that is quite an ask! Definitely getting to offer some verbal encouragement throughout helped with keeping that head up and tail wagging ;) Watching those videos back, I noticed heeling around the cones in the two last runs she was anticipating a figure 8 pattern and started to take herself in that direction Things are looking good RS, So you are allowed to talk to them in Rally then? Yep, you can chatter away to them to your heart's content :D And in Novice level you can even give your dog a pat for encouragement when in there ;) I have a few minor concerns of Rally possibly affecting "traditional" obedience, but not enough to not take part should it become recognised and they start holding trials here in WA. eg. One of the exercises you have to get your dog to sit, and then down from the sit, which I try to not encourage because I have one of those dogs who lays down in sit stays ;) Another is you have to do both types of left about turns, and after working to eradicate the behind the back one in the ring, all of a sudden I had to reintroduce it. But these are very minor, and it is a lot of fun to do ;) I am keen to give Rally O a go as I have a dog who cannot do sit stays.....

I used to get that issue with my dog when he was younger he threw up everytime, he gets a roo bone a day now and we have no problems, as soon as I add chicken necks or beef bones in he throws up again.
