Agility Training Talk Thread
RallyValley replied to Vickie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Cosmolo I was considering teaching running contacts, but you have to have your own, full size equipment. Silvia Turkjman (I think, i can't google at work ) a famous Slovenian with world champ dogs teaches them and explains her method on her website. -
Hey Tiggy did you hear anything back about Rally tonight? On Monday I swear Vicki and Cindy said it was on, but I haven't heard anything else. Not sure if I will come either way though because I am resting Toby.
-
All the dogs here wipe there faces and a fav trick of Toby's is to come in wet, jump on the couch and wriggle around till he is dry. He will then get on the other couch, spread out and go to sleep.
-
So he focus is on obidience for me and Toby for the moment. I was going to do some rear end awareness and lateral awareness exercised from an agility book, do you think these will benefit obidience or do they have thier own rear end awareness exercises?

I'm sorry valleyCBR I don't know the story behind this, but having rehomed two of my beloved pooches before moving over here, I know just how hard it is I realise that Byford is a quarantine station and not a luxury kennel, but the constant dampness in the kennels is surely not good for any dog and being kicked out of the exercise area when no one has booked it after you is just mean - it's the only chance the dogs get to get a bit of sun on their back and to be in a dry environment this time of year :D Thankfully he is not rehomed just on a holiday with his breeder to go to some shows/ get some retrieveing training/ they are taking him to Adelaide for the Adelaide royal. I can imagine how hard it would be to give up a dog forever, spending 6 weeks away from my boy will be torture.

Glad to hear Lincoln got there safely. How are you holding up??? My mistake, Lincoln wasn't on the way home but went to a trainee judges seminar and helped educate new judges about the breed along with his sister. That boy is going to have to time of his life!

When Do You Retire A Dog From Agility

I had the Bowen Therapist out. She found inflammation in his shoulder so he probably hurt himself hooning around with Lincoln or training in the wet. I am giving him a break from training for a few days (obviously) and will see how he goes. I have a follow up appointment next week and I will get a physio referral next time I am at the vets. -
Thats lovely that she comes to the house, does she do all areas? I think she would do Ellenbrook. PM me if you want her number. Toby is so relaxed and the therapist found inflamation in his shoulder so it's not his leg! I am not too bad Ptolomy but it hasn't him me yet I don't think. When I slow down it probably will.
-
They have kennels so he will probably rotate between the kennels and house, sharing and not sharing. Just waiting got the Bowen Therapist to come look at Toby, she should be here soon!
-
Lincoln made it alright and is currently in the breeders dog trailer with his sister on the way to his "new" home.

Oh no! Your poor animals seem to be having a hard time of it. If you dont come right with Toby's allergies maybe you should take him to see the derm, she is a lovely lady and i am sure she will be able to help, Mason has his tests on friday, will let you know how it goes. From the elimination diet we now also know that he is allergic to chicken. I am almost 100% sure Toby has a contact allergy to grass as his elimination diet did nothing to easehis symptoms but in the summertime when all the grass dies he is fine. We are taking him to the vet in a couple of weeks somaybe I can get a derm (as well as physio) referall and have a chat with them. (Hopefully I will win the lotto too to pay for these treatments) GR can't wait to hear more about this new pup.
-
My mind is preoccupied in two other places since Toby seems a bit lame and has the worst allergies atm and Lilly has started to lose weight and a few days ago took a tumble and couldn't right herself but otherwise seems fine.
-
You watch it RS or I might just hitch a ride I don't know what I will do with my weekends if Toby is out of agility and no Lincoln to show! Thank goddness I will be showing soggybear
-
I will get back to you Lab rat after Toby's Bowen appointment. He may be scratched due to injury but he is definately entered. I think the safer bet would be later in the month when a whole lot of Red Kids and two labs hit Bunbury for some obidience.
-
You are braver than me, I am having a hard time letting Mason stay at the dermatologist for a day I had a cry on the way to the train station and will probably have one tonight when it hits me he is gone.
-
I'm not at home! I had to work today and my dad had to take him to the airport. I had to say goodbye at like 7.30 this morning. Toby has the Bowen Therapist tonight, not the one you recommended although he will visit her too but he can't get in for a couple of weeks, I found one in my suburb so I can get some feedback sooner.

Lincoln is on the plane on his way to Melbourne. I am waiting for the call to let me know he landed ok!

When Do You Retire A Dog From Agility

Mrs Rusty bucket the lake a 10 min walk from my house would fit the bill perfectly for wading through chest high water. He needs to go back to the vets about his allergies so I might ask for a physio referral. I had forgotten all about physios -
(Waits for an obidience person to come into the thread and explain)

All the best people will be showing on the 10th

Toby is just over 2 years now. The break was a clean break through the radius and ulna about an inch and a half below the elbow (radius/ulna - humerus joint) so very far from the carpal joint. It was caused by a horse stepping on the leg. Because Toby was so young and still growing they were very hesitant to put metal pins/plates incase they limited growth, because of this that leg is turned in but the same length as the leg that did not break. If you look at my sig you can see the affected leg is still not as bulky as the undamaged leg. The accident was almost 2 years ago. I don't know if there are any underwater treadmills in Perth, I will have to find out and I couldn't find any 2 years ago. I do have some clips on youtube of him doing agility but none that are really close up. -

Wait for the therapist's opinion, but I'd say you're right. Agility is a front end sport. If he's starting to refuse jumps something's not right. It will probably be bone/tendon issues, rather than muscle that are causing the problem IMO. If he's not on joint support already, I'd be starting him but sounds like it's time, to retire if he's no longer enjoying himself. He already gets joint guard, fish oil and I am debating cartrophen injections. Basically he gets the same treatment as my 14 yeard old arthritic dog. -
Before anyone acusses me of being dramatic or a quiter I want to post a pic of Toby's leg after his cast came off at just under 6 months old where you can see the extent of the muscle wastage: Toby was cleared to do "anything he wants" by the vets after his final x-ray at 9 months old and again just before 12 months I took him to another vet and got an opinion on his soundness for agility who said it would be fine. I did however make the desicion that the A frame might be too much strain on the leg so he has only been training in jumpers. When we train it is for 5 mins at the absoulte max and never in a situation where he can't take off if he is sick of it. This winter we have noticed after he has been in one position for a long time he is a bit proppy on the leg, the vets say this is normal. He has started to refuse jumps and I believe that although this could be a training issue it probably isn't and he is probably trying to let me know he is hurting. I have him booked into a bowen therapapist but wanted to know if anyone else had any other avenues to try out. I just wanted to pick the DOLers brains for some ideas I might not have thought of. However I think I should go with my gut feeling and retire him.

Sounds awesome Rusky! Me and ST are starting doing some Rally stuff this Monday but we will be on the bottom oval. I will most likely be at the Show and Go on Sunday too!
