Working/working Line Dogs As Pets
RallyValley replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am in the minority here but I come from a breed with only one line. There are a few dual purpose breeds around. My boy had a huge drive to retrieve and has lines working tittles, actual working dogs on both sides of his pedigree as well as show dogs including several all breeds BIS winners. His litter mates have gone as pets, exclusively show dogs, exclusively working dogs and my boy is destined to be a show and sports dog (and retrieveing if I can ever figure it out!). ;) -

I am so happy that you get her back this arvo It hopefully won't seem so daunting when she is at least back at home. A man up the road had a GSP with cancer (not sure what sort) and he pulled through and must be at least 10 years old by now.

The Dogs SA open day did seem a little disorganized and was REALLY badly timed, but the concept was good and I got to see a tracking demonstration, earthdog demonstration and herding demonstration and some DWD going on. For the general public that would be really exciting and an eye opener of what they can do with thier dog.

I think people on the obidience/agility comitte are allowed to handle. I think the difference is that judgong for dog sports is more like maths - wright or wrong no in between whereas showing is less black and white, one persons interpretation on the day based on thier opinions/ interpretation of standards. WZ- I am involved in obedience, agility and showing and I also have a huge admiration for retrieveing and tracking. However (putting on flame suit) I have found that sports people more readily make fun of showing people BUT most showing people I speak to have nothing but admiration for those that do sports. Saying that though it really is up to us dog sports people to look after our interests because as much as showing people may admire sports they have a bucketload of work of thier own to do! Obviously since we didn't know about any of this WC stuff until too late I would like to know what can be done for the future? Get a sports person on the WC committie? Maybe we could copy Dogs SA and have an open day where we have displays from all dog sports and have the obedience challenge there. I know that sounds awfully naieve but all I have seen so far is finger pointing and no actual solutions. ;)

Go Chessies!

If it gets too much for the dog go and do the course without him

So sorry for you! If you don't feel like being alone this weekend and don't have other plans and it won't make you feel too sad you should come down to the Royal Show and just hand out with Dolers at obedience and showing on Sunday, and agility Monday. ;)
-
Am thinking that Ptolomy needs to tell us who we should send concerns too. Maybe start a petiton and send it to Ann Rushby? :D I am happy to get signatures on Sunday from the general public as well as us dog folk. ;)

I hope it continues to be and I would dummy enter my dogs to show my support. However I think I will be really into showing at the WC this year as licnoln will probably title there! Ooh exciting I don't know what I am going to do at the WC this year. Might see where the judges are from before making a decision since my show dogs are rejects atm and I doubt I would have a new puppy by then But then again I don't know how many agility dogs I will have as they might be out on maternity duty Nice relaxing weekend at home and just take Varda for the obedience (and Banjo for obedience and agility if I get my act together!)? When is the WC? We wont be ready this year but maybe next year...... In Feb (so next year )

This is the dog I took to the Perth Rally Seminar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j2ka0y2L38 He had NEVER don any heel work, did not know down and was distracted by the 100,000,000 birds flying around. And I learnt heaps!

Hmm just a question.. say I entered Lincoln and Toby in CCD and CD to show my support with my wallet at the Western Classic and then withdrew them on the night would thet be wrong? (Because in a few years when Lincoln IS actually ready for CCd and/or CD I would like to have a Western Classic to still enter him in!)
-
Hmm well the Royal might be the only big show Obedience has left after the stupid decision made today about the Western Classic!
-
Oh That sucks. I hope thier tests are speedy and conclusive for you.

Totally, and I am such a baby in situations like this! OH is away too which makes it harder. Leila was quite bright yesterday arvo and didnt know what all the fuss was about and why I was so panicy! The vet said this morning she is ready come home and doesnt realise the seriousness, but said she likes the drugs they have been giving her :D Yeah when I went to visit Lincoln he was bright and chirpy and trying to chase dragonflies but seeing him all shaved and with a drip made me . It's good she likes the drugs and you must be estatic to be getting her back :D
-
I hope all is well! DON'T GOOGLE Fingers crossed for you guys! Also if you go and visit take tissues cause if your anything like me you will be bawling your eyes out the whole time!
-
My boys don't really shed (Although they do have hair! )

Fingers crossed for her! It's so scary to have to rush them to Murdoch. Sending positive thoughts your way.

As I said, different subjects. As for rant, yes I do object to people that rubbish any Dog that doesn’t look EXACTLY like Dog-X. I am looking for a pet, so whilst I want the dog to comply with the standard, I am primarily concerned with hips, eyes, etc. (If my pet turned out to be suitable for breeding, AND I could find a decent sire, then I might consider it, but that’s not my primary goal.) I’m glad that you mentioned a few other things. When I bought Coco, I was told by this breeder that the Sire & Dam were Hip & Eye certified, and in fact that they had pioneered this practice in WA! Naturally this time I would ask for evidence. What do you regard as the issue, with only meeting the Dam through a Fence? She claims that she doesn’t let people go any further because of diseases? Thankyou for recommending the other Kennels. Hawksdale has a litter due next month, so I am contemplating putting my name down. They will be black, but I would prefer a healthy black to a poorly bred Chocolate. The others have no litters planned. I have only purchased my first purebred dog last year and his sire and dam were US imports so I was able to look up thier pedigree names in OFA and see all the health results for the sire and dam, thier litter mates, thier sire and dam ect. In Australia since we don't have an open online system I would request to be shown copies of the papers or given photocopies. Ok hypothetical time- say I went to go meet a sire and dam for a litter being born "towards the end of the year" a few years ago at a breeder. The breeder was unable to show me the dam as "a few bitches are having litters and I don't know which one it will be" they then brought the sire to the fence. At the time they were bringing out a few pups from a litter that were 4 weeks old in a laundry basket for a meet and greet. If said pups are whelped in the house why was I not able to go to the kennel to meet the sire and dam? If the litter is not on the ground I don't see the disease risk, if they constantly have litters on the gorund well... I have visited a few other breeders of various breeds and they all welcomed me into thier homes to meet thier dogs, even when they had pups on the ground. Obviously it is at thier discretion for hygiene resasons and not until the pups are after a certain age but never being allowed to see more then a breeders front yard ring alarm bells for me. ;)
