Rottweiler Bob Tail Gene
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Jacquiboss&scoop's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yup they are real , but was wondering why they are not more common , it has been a few years since the ban on docking was introduced so was wondering if there is health reason why more are not being produced now , I know a few breeders walked away from the breed when the ban was introduced , bit sad love my rotties tails and all , -
Rottweiler Bob Tail Gene
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Jacquiboss&scoop's topic in General Dog Discussion
LOL I did 2 20 years ago until I saw one in the ring , they are few and far between as far as I understand it but some lines do carry it , was wondering why it was not more common -
Hi I would like to know why the Bob tailed rottie lines are not more common now , I recall reading somwhere many years ago that the bob tail gene was often found to also link to entropin in the breed but as to its factuality I could not say. My question is because we are starting to consider adding to our family of furies and would consider looking out for a bob tail if it has the required confirmation and temp thanks

Downtime After Training
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Red Fox's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
any body got link for latent learning studies in dogs and animals? I would find it a very interesting read as I have only come across the concepts in humans before , when I think about it I always play a fast hyped game with our dogs for little while after we finish and then leave them to themselves , but I did it because it can be hard work so thought that we all needed a rest have not considered the latent learning angle at all . -
Downtime After Training
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Red Fox's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Just a suggestion but could it be connected more to the concept of deprivation in training , I know a few people who train then crate before training again when they get intensive , perhaps not so much allowing them to absorb the session as making them want the interaction with the handler that much more perhaps ? -
HI Magstar Would suggest you try the triangle of temptation posted at the top of the training thread , it also creates a basis for other training , if you hit issues with it just post to the thread and steve will help you out

Buying From A Breeder's Very First Litter
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Hemingway's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have done and did very well with both her and the breeder , was my first rottie , she showed to aus champ in the late 80 s and obedience titled as well lived to be 11 years old no probs , was fantastic experience , due to kids they only ever bred on other litter although their dog was used a bit , if all looks good go for it -
Dog-related Good Manners
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes that does say it quiet well , how easy it is to focus on the joy of the moment and the strength of the passion , -
excluding socialisation with focus on commands 1. recall real good recall 2. Drop fantastic drop Yes I train these from the get go , for their good as well as mine a good recall will get them back to you and fast a good drop will stop them in their tracks and keep em still until safe for a good recall until I can rely on both no off lead anywhere that is not on my own property ( we dont do doggy parks I live on acres )

Dog-related Good Manners
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think that the if you dont have anything nice to say keep your mouth shut covers most of it , Remember that this is a first meeting with someone talking about a passion that they have , what impression would you like to leave ? try pretending that the owner of the dog that you insult or are rude to may one day be the person who interviews you for that fantastic job , hmmm think they may recall the person who was nasty and hurtful in a favourable light ? Remember the rules that you apply when meeting people at a party or work function apply them when you meet other dog owners ? Sorry Sky but think that trying to retrain adult humans how to be social and polite is a martyers job , would rather teach a DA or HA dog would have an easier time of it LOL dogs are easy -
Have You Been Dog Snobbed?
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yup funny enough I have 2 mutts and one pure breed Rottie, I get the snub for the rottie , are you not worried that she will turn on the kids ?, that one is just insulting big dog with orange eyebrows , most of the time It isnt a bother dont let it get to me I know what she is like with kids. I did however feel sorry for a lady I met one day recently with a blue harl Dane puppy bitch I thought she was beautiful and social , commented on her unusual colur and was sad to see her hunch up and explain that this was a fault I still think she was a beautiful Dane such a shame that her owner was so uncomfortable talking about her , I would say some people have been very mean and it can be hurtful after all most of us love our dogs no matter what they look like, people should be more gentle with each other a little kindness goes a long way -
I have three that do it the rottie growls this turns into Woo Woo when I get in late Keisha the cattle cross yodle yawns and growl noises ( think the cross might be husky ? ) the staff cross grunts ?? all funny noises the Rottie is a little off putting for strangers as it sounds a bit scary she is the only one of several rotties I have had that do it , little Emmy looks like a spitz breed , most of these that I have met talk to some degree the mals and huskys are real talkers

How Many People Should Be In Charge Of 'training' A Pup?
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to goldee's topic in Puppy Chat
Hi Training options are many , puppy schools , obedience clubs and come to you personal training vary in cost and timing I like the ones run by the obedience and breed clubs , puppy interacts with dogs of different ages and contact with older dogs is often good to help teach them manners as running with just puppies can sometimes teach bad manners you also get to interact more with different owners and trainers that have different approach to each other but they often get similar results they also focus more on the dog learning what you would like them to learn instead of being a puppy play group which a lot of puppy preschools sadly are personal training is the most expensive of the options but for some people is easiest , advice would be to use only someone who has dogs that you like the behaviour of or from people who have dogs they have helped with and you like the results and methods used seeing as she is your first own dog then a breed club puppy school or an obedience club would give you lots of people to talk to about training and care methods so that you can adopt the one you feel works best for you and your puppy and increase your confidence in what you are doing -
How Many People Should Be In Charge Of 'training' A Pup?
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to goldee's topic in Puppy Chat
Perhaps a little off topic but an example of what can go wrong when people hit puppies This I watched play out in the waiting room of my vet , the vet nurse was as stunned as I was Choc Lab puppy about 5 months old came in with family in tow father grandmother mother and kids x2 Puppy sat quietly with grandmother and all looked good , father got out of seat moved over to grandmother and pup , pup tucked tail between legs backed up beside grandmother and began agro bark and jump at the father , he growled back at dog and smacked on the nose , the puppy appeared fine with the rest of the family but I expect that it would have been PTS before it was 18 months old for being HA , Very sad as poodlefan says the most prob will be head shy but the above could well be the senario for your family as well , -

Jacquiboss&scoop replied to goldee's topic in Puppy Chat
agree with poodlefen One person to train new commands , others can reinforce , every one should use the same command and hand signal for the same action , if people are interfering with the initial training then do this when they are not around , one person to give command at a time. Perhaps the reminder that puppy is a baby will help to stop hitting the pups nose after all you dont hit human babies and offering alternatives that work to settle the undesired behaviour. Perhaps that you like the fact that everyone wants to help but that everyone has to do things the same way for the puppy to learn quickly Good luck -
Hi Aussie lover Might be worth asking all the same questions that you would when buying any other puppy of known heritage , do the parents have health clearance for inherited conditions as we are talking poodles and labrador they have different issues so you would need at least eye certified clear hips scored within the tolerances for both poodles and lab and elbows done as well think there is a DNA marker test done with breeding poodles "am not 100% sure as not my breed ) , registered purebreeds have to have this done before breeding so this would be my min requirment for any other dog where both parents are known . General health history of parents and grandparents as well. Best way to know if you would buy a dog from anywhere is to talk to visit and use your own gut feeling as to how healthy and well adjusted your pet may be should you buy from there . I would suggest to the friend that should they wish to buy they should require the same testing as for a pure puppy as they appear to be paying pet purebreed price. As to the ethics and standards of the business in question this is clearly a business but the only way to know if it reflects what you consider good animal husbandry or not is to visit , in saying that it is not unusual for breeders to request visits by appointment only we all have times where visitors are not appropriate for lots of reasons and most kennels are attached to a persons home so do drop in is not encouraged. I am not a supporter of designer doggies a mut is a mut I have 2 one from the AWL and one was a dumped pup both are very nice dogs, I am a little suprised at the claim of no shed on all their pups one of the reasons that they did not continue to breed them was that the coat was not predictable even after I think 5 generations , so are they culling the incorrect coat types ? is a question that I would like to ask , if not what do they do with them ? as the variation in coat is very high. Most breeders breed for the next in the chain of a planned outcome , break even is a hope profit is unusual, most breeders would like to register as a business but the ATO takes a dim view of business that loses money 4 years out of five LOL good luck but if people are determined then the best you can do is arm them with as much info and warning signs as you can cheers

Hi Alvin If puss is an inside cat only try having puppy on lead in the house and correcting before he goes to chase ( when the ears go up and he gets tense preparing to pounce ) , in a lot of dogs cats running sets off their prey drive inciting them to chase it is almost impossible to stop them once they start but with good timing you can get them before they do Correction with a bah ,growl no, if he goes to take off and click treat when he is indifferent to the cat and sitting with you quietly Because he has already gained reward from chasing puss this one will be hard to extinguish it could be worth getting a trainer out to see and advise you at home Breed can be a factor in this behaviour as well a sighthound is going to be harder to control the prey drive of than a pug would be You may have to accept that the cat and dog should never be out in the yard together with out being controlled as small animals are prey and if puss runs the dog will chase this can end up with a lot of heart ache , if your pup is a large breed a paw squashing can be enough to hurt the cat badly

I might sound a little cruel but I just want them off , I suppose salt could be considered a cruel choice how complex is a leaches nervous system anyway ? yup instant death would be the most humane but even insect killer would take time to work , umm an ethics question I didnt expect now am thinking of how I dispose of the slugs and snails in the veggie patch ( beer and salt )

Hi Adding another dog doesnt always mean twice the time and work , sometimes it is less , if your current boy loves company then it may be a good move , but I would have to say for the sake of any future puppies if you have any doubts then dont other puppies will come up should you change your mind later and feel that it is a better time with more time to dedicate to them Also remember that a young puppy needs time away from older playmates to rest I dont know how full on your boxer is but if he is all day on the go in doggy company it would be too much for a new baby

Yup using salt at the moment to get them off , have used it myself and it does sting a little when the little blighters let go as it gets on the wound where they were hanging on , we are pretty wet at the moment , might be our grass is long around the house too as the lawn mower has bitten the dust and OH keeps putting off getting the new one ( would then need to catch up on the grass ) plus the girls love any thing and all things wet and muddy , thanks for all the suggestions thank dog its too cold here for the cane toads eww yuck things (and we would lose all our frogs )

The AVA recently changed their recommended vaccination plans , the issue with Parvo vac as I understand it has to do with the vaccine type ( live vs dead ) used with the dead losing effectiveness first . Facts are that in some dogs the immune response never happened with out testing the serum levels you dont know if puppy vacs have worked or not the other 2 have shown in studies to have several years worth at least of cover so am not sure where he is coming from on this ? So perhaps some truth involved , but did his usual not present all available info , suggest you read the studies and make an informed decision LOL Having a Rottweiler makes me very careful about parvo but as I read more I find that the timing of the initial vacs make all the difference not the yearly vacs so much

Moving To A New House And Immunisations
Jacquiboss&scoop replied to 4 Paws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi 4 Paws your vet can test for immunity levels before you move , should they be to low to protect them you can then reconsider as to re vaccination for them I am unsure of the costs others may be able to give you an average for it , I dont think I would be willing to risk there not being parvo on the property just based on an exsiting dog being ok , as this dog may be immune Hope your move goes well I hate moving house
