I have used VAN since bringing both my dogs home, only as it is easier. In saying that i dont go through it quickly, as i still use fresh vegies and such with their fresh meat. Ive never had a problem with it, but as is said i dont live by that alone mixed with their raw meat.

Appointments Or Walk-in At Vets...
sandra64 replied to stormie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Last time i was at the vet, he was a little ahead of his appointments and i was in there for 45 minutes as megs had gone to sleep on the table(which she always does cause she must think it will all dissappear) If he didnt run appointments i wouldnt have had that luxury of having a good talk with him, but then he is that sort of vet that doesnt rush anything. How on earth could you schedule your operating times if people were just wandering in off the street, If you have 3 or 4 ops each day, you cant be leaving mid op to see patients. -
Chewing Us Out Of House And Home!

I would hate to think how many sony play station3 remotes we have bought.... and foxtel remotes have bite marks all through them. Our amstaff boy only seemed to grab the last thing the boys had touched. He only did it a few times. He melts slide into the ground when you say "did you do this" thats all that had to be said to him, anymore and you would break his heart the big sook. Ive got a 14yr ol stumpy blue that when she was a pup, my goodness anything that i wore to gym including the shoes was mulched up in the front yard if i left her. She would go through the washing basket in the laundry and pick out my clothes and rip them to shreds because i left her. She grew out of it, but was an expensive few months. -
Thanks for those pics. Megs went for her first herding lesson on wednesday, she did so well...She went to see Kate Beck. Kate was very impressed with her. No excitement at the sheep just did what was expected, so in the new year she will be doing a little of that....Yes its official im addicted to my kelpies....Mandy has nice shots of megs and the others from katya's litter on her site under other kelpies...

What do you mean by Agility/flyball not being an indication of temperament- do you mean in their ability to work stock or their temperament in general? im your age nearly and i have 2 kelpies and they a perfect for my lifestyle. Wouldnt want any other dog.I dont find kelpies demanding and i have had a few in my years, as pups you have to train them just like any other dog, if you want more out of them thats your choice. Yes you are right ,It does come down to pick the right dog for lifestyle, but hasnt that always sort of been the case. I run my dogs x country every morning for an hr and they love it. My 6 month old girl you wouldnt even known she was in the house from day one, she has never chewed anything, cried , been naughty in any way. I could almost say the perfect angel:=) Hi Sandra Another brain-fart on my part sorry I should have added I had bone cancer 6 years ago and 1/3 of the anterior tibia was removed, 5 months in hospital, a further 12 months in a wheelchair. Although I have returned to full time work now, even though I am back in my feet I am seriously restricted - I would have trouble running to the bathroom let alone running cross country. I have 1 geriatric show titled Kelpie couch potato who's prioity in life is to be on the couch, a borderxkelpiexcoolie who does obedience (there was an brief article about us in the January Dogs NSW journal) and our 2 labs bitches. With hopefully one in pup. I hope that better explains why I find the Labs better suit my lifestyle. know where your coming from. My eldest boy has spent 4 years having a new femur cultured, as he had none or a patella due to a near fatal accident.45 ops on,It does limit ones movement. wow ;) Sorry to hear about your boy. I must say though my most stable and reliable support at the time was my old Kelpie, ( my current girls grandmother) who constantly stayed by my bed and was there whenever I needed her. She made me laugh and she let me cry - Kelpies are fantastic emotional support Oh no he's fine, like you you become very strong and then hide behind a door to cry. I am just so very grateful he is alive and did not suffer brain damage, as he was very close to that point. He was very good through the whole ordeal, and yes the best thing he had at that point was a dog to come home to every time he returned from hopspital...

Does Anyone Separate Their Dogs When They Go Out?
sandra64 replied to geo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The only thing that should be separated in our house is the manx cat thats the size of a pea, who freaked out when i brought the first dog home, and he absolutely let her do whatever, then when the second one came into the house she thought i have the backing of my mate here and she rules the roost. If the cat want to look in their food bowls they step back, the 6 month of female pup take s a wide step around her sometimes, but they all get on on megs chases the cat and when the cat stops megs puts on the brakes real quick., in case she gets swiped. -
wish my lot didnt know the difference between homebrand and name brand products.... they just wont eat the cheaper ones. typical

Gees Rappie you guys need to buy yourselves a few sets. You know you can get disposible ones donĀ“t you? These days they discharge people from hospital with their own staple remover so they can take it to the GP surgery to have them removed (even though most GP surgeries have several of them!) i know this one real well. every time my son came out of hospital with staples in his leg we would get a set(.After 45 ops) We would say to them keep them, my g.p. got so used to me having them, he went out and bought a spare set.....

Ok playing devils advocate,by adding kelp in whatever amount ,how can you be sure you are not throwing their thyroid totally out of whack? that why i buy vets all natural its all premixed to a vets specification. i didnt say make up my own amounts. I have always been of the belief that the thyroid is something you don't mess with and really how many wild dogs eat seaweed? Surely they get enough iodine from organs... geez i was just using those two ingredients of examples of whats in the mix. i didnt say i force feed the dogs seeweed no wonder people dont post on this forum they get executed. if id said there was rolled oats in it, i would have been in trouble for that as well. you feed your dog what you want and ill feed mine. im sure the amount my lot eat of kelp, they would be in more danger from the toxins coming out of a cars exhaust when we go for a walk. I'm not qualified to give an opinion on it, i leave the trust in the professionals, but my breeder has an honours degree in science majoring in zoology, and she gives her dogs vets all natural, so if it was going to damage the dogs in any way we wouldnt be feeding them that. WOW talk about sensitive. I was questioning it because it is NOT needed. Yep you feed what you want to and your dog can get a whole load of additives it does'nt need and you can possibly screw with it's system. I am NOT bashing you but if you go and google information about feeding kelp to dogs and the pros and cons then that is my intention, not to upset you. Make sure to look for the cons too....this forum is all about sharing information and debating the postives AND negatives of things. Sorry but we are not here to agree with each other all the time, how damn boring would that be! Oh and kelp IS seaweed . Oats won't make your dog psychotic but kelp can! Execution is illegal in Australia as far as I know. So don't worry keep posting you are safe. think i know what kelp is, i am allergic to iodine. Next time my dogs are having a great time playing in the surf, i will make sure they dont chew on any plankten.

we had a cold hot dog fall on the kitchen floor one day and my dog just sniffed it and walked away.hee hee. then the next one came along and did the same thing. hmm i dont think i could get away with using them as a treat., but i find them yummy......really good training food for a endurance mountain biker. NOT!mine would crash tackle me if they had the chance for a liver treat though.Australian made ones of course.....

i find using a bit of vets all natural complete mix in with whatever raw meat i am using usually chicken or blade steak, but i also add their vegies and whatever leftover's i have in with it. i dont live by vets all natural, but i find it saves me buying all the ingredients ( kelp and lecithin and such) its all in the mix. my 6month old girl has not a problem munching on a cold stick of celery or cold watermelon.

Exercise Before Obedience Class This Morning?
sandra64 replied to fainty_girl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
last time i went to obedience class, with a kelpie, he was 4 months old and in our beginner group i had about 6 small breed dogs that just barked the whole time, they said the first class would be just under an hr but he had all these beginner dogs out there 4 over and hr and a half. i ended up walking away as the yapping was doing my head in. That went on every week. I so much wanted to learn more but threw it in after those 6weeks.These clubs mean well, but you cant concentrate yourself in that environment. As i found out nothing had changed since i went 20 odd years ago. -

Not saying anything is right or wrong here, but the breeder i deal with has a biology, honours in science, zoology, degree. studied physiology and dietry needs of animals, and the list is endless. i try and stick to part of how she has studied her own dogs over the last 15years, and i follow as much raw as possible. Its not that simple obviously, but i works for me
