A child 4yrs and under can be 'taught' as much as you like, but they still won't remember it in the heat of the moment. Ever seen the ad with the kid who runs onto the road after a ball? Same thing. They have one track minds, even older kids. However, having said that, the parents should be there supervising the interaction. We were molested by a child who would have been 18 months old on the weekend! The parents were nowhere in sight. I couldn't even ask the child to leave the dog alone because she was too young.

My friend recently got a lab puppy - you may have seen my posts about her wanting to rehome it. It is now about 9 months old, very very destructive (their yard is bare dirt now with pot holes), it is very very bouncy and is always knocking over her two small kids and the poor dog is bored out of its brain. My friend also wanted a cute puppy, and now she has an annoying, active, naughty dog.

Vet Says To Leave Anal Glands Alone?
Kirty replied to jaegertheweim's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thankyou for putting that reply so succinctly because the preceeding comment was making me quite grumpy. I'm pretty sure I can speak for EVERY Veterinarian that they would be glad never to have to deal with another anal gland abscess as long as they live. Also the insinuation that we enjoy letting animals get to the stage where they are in terrible pain for our own monetary gain is just plain nasty. We had one 'release' at work the other day and OMG I hope I never have to smell that again! Seriously, it would have to be a vet's least favourite job. I have never had a problem with any of my dogs, thankfully. -
Its actually two different playgrounds. ;) We had a busy day.

Finally got around to getting a few photos of Tilly today. I have been taking her out with me whenever possible to try and get her used to being around strange people. She accepted pats from several kids today which was a big deal for her. She is a funny little dog and we have a long way to go, but she is so gentle and sweet. ;)

Is There Anything You Can Use/spray To Deter Dogs Toiletting?
Kirty replied to Kirty's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't really want it to be aversive as such. Thats why I thought something like Oust might deter them if they really smell the ground, but won't affect them if they are just hanging out. I spray Oust on my bathmats to stop the cats pissing on them, but it doesn't stop them from sleeping on them. But maybe it might upset the dogs. Hmmm. I could block off the deck but then I have to somehow get the cubby (where the dogs sleep) off the deck! LOL! -
Is There Anything You Can Use/spray To Deter Dogs Toiletting?

It might work with Tilly, but my own four terrorists would rip it to shreds in seconds and unfortunately they are all sharing the space. -
Tomorrow is the first day of Operation Stop-crapping-on-my-deck with the new foster dog. I have been told about products that REMOVE the smell of wee and poo, but is there anything you can use to deter them from going there in the first place? It can't be too strong because the dogs eat and sleep on the deck. But I was thinking maybe if I sprayed "Oust" or air freshener or something similar on the deck if it might deter her when she sniffs around before going to the toilet. Any ideas?

My dog used to get NG and it was the only thing that didn't give her the runs. However, when we bought it (about 5 years ago) it definitely DID contain offal! I clearly remember finding the odd claw or piece of gut, etc.

How ironic. The Chinese want their dogs to look like tigers, meanwhile they are the ones driving them to extinction.

Cool, thanks JAG. The faded girl in your pic is exactly like the one at work. He was a very sweet little dog.

I don't walk in the rain. Two of my dogs wouldn't care, the other two would hate it.

I'm so sorry keetamouse. I think you did the right thing though. RIP Snowy.

What are the possible colours in a toy poodle? Do whites have black pigment? We have a standard that comes into work who is white but with black pigment, so when he is clipped his face and feet look dark - can you get this in toys? Also, we had a poodle come into work the other day that was described as being 'chocolate'. Is there such a colour? I thought brown poodles were called brown, not choc? Also, this particular poodle is actually a really interesting colour. He seems to be purebred but he is a smokey brown colour. Its a very light colour, the tips of the hairs are brown but the bases are grey/silver. If he was a cat, I'd call him a choc smoke. What colour would this poodle be?

What can you say? Morons.

Does she produce enough saliva? Wasn't there a story on here a while ago about a dog who was not producing saliva?

Rec For Vet In Eastern Suburbs Melb? Non-yearly Vaccs!

No vet can make you vaccinate your dog. Take in for a vacc, then tell them you'll see them in 3 years! -
Have Organised To Get Pups To Brisbane - Now I'm Told Very Strongl
Kirty replied to Pipsal's topic in General Dog Discussion
Look at how many dogs and puppies come out of pounds every day in Australia - most of them are unvaccinated too. Sure, it is possible they could be carrying something, but its unlikely given how healthy they are now. For your peace of mind, keep them in a laundry or garage at your place - a room that can easily be washed/scrubbed clean. -
You could also just add some hot water to her biscuits, let them soak for a while and then give them to her. They soften up nicely and seem to be yummier for the dogs. I sometimes also add a teaspoon of gravy powder to the hot water. If she is having trouble swallowing and has UTI's, etc, I would think more moisture would help? So adding water to her food may be a way for her to get some more water without having to drink.

10-15 years ago they did not have severely squashed faces and restricted airways.

How could you not fall in love? I fostered one - and failed! After years of fostering hundreds of dogs and cats, this gorgeous little Greyhound puppy stole my heart. She is naughty and cheeky but so affectionate and sweet. I love her to bits. She loves to run but only for a few minutes. She loves her walks too. Don't recall ever hearing her bark, but she whinges and whines a lot! LOL! Oh and the screaming! Far out, I thought I had killed her the first week we had her! She came racing up to me on 3 legs, screaming her head off. Turned out she just had some tanbark between her toes! ROFL!!

I think most beaches are open to dogs during Winter. Not sure about on-leash/off-leash but I know we used to take our dog to lots of beaches in Winter.
