Thanks all, we suffer with chewing animal parts and high reward treats, as he can only eat his super hypo-allergenic dog food and carrot lol. But the other suggestions seem alright, I think it's back to firm basics of "sit", and I'm just going to lie to my friends and family and say he knocked over a pregnant woman or something so they really pay attention!!! Thanks again x

I'm not too proud of this topic and have come back to the DOL forum for some help. I have a rough collie (4yrs) and G.retriever x Border Collie (3yrs). My G.RxBC STILL JUMPS UP ON PEOPLE. He doesn't jump up on me, but he has worked out that he can basically get away with blue murder with any human in the dog park, and any other person out of my reach. I have family members and friends that DO NOT understand he is very easily hyped up and they all do the typical "laughing" "hands flailing" "oh! oh! ha ha! get down! now now!" which, well, you can imagine the result. I have tried to say polietly, please just ignore the black dog until he calms right down, but it seems to have little effect on the people - seriously, to the point that they think ignoring means holding their hands up really high and staring at him. In these instances I usually have to pull Riley away, which I know he gets more excited if you pull him back on his collar. He also barks and carrys on with excitement. I keep him away from small children or on his leash, but even then he has terrible manners - he will bark, cry (kind of half excitmenet, kind of half tantrum) and still try to jump up from his "sit" even though I have the other end of the lead. Does anyone have any advice on how I can better train him not to jump up? I feel like I have got "don't jump on me" down pat (I firmly ignore him, stop all games and look away), but I'm really failing here in some aspect. I feel like I have only barely got a handle on this. If I had trained him right, then surely the don't jump up would apply to other humans too. We are currently walking him twice a day, normally it's once a day but I'm upping the anti. These are 40min to 60min walks each. He is allergic to some protein which we haven't isolated yet (lamb is definately one!) so we can't give him a bone to chew on (sorry i mention this because I really think this would help his energy levels so much). But again, I guess the real help I need here is how to better train him not to jump on other people. Any advice, criticism or sharing of experience would be much appriciated!! thank you! Faye

Next time say it's a highly deformed cocker spaniel. EDIT: This was a joke. Just realised it seemed a bit blunt. I think it's unfair how people judge dogs based on breeds. Dog's should be judged in person, I've met some rotten labs and B.Collies. Good luck with the coast trip. We stayed somewhere in Tuross, plenty of dog beaches around there too, maybe give them a go? :)

My dog isn't agressive, but he is "special" and used to get into scrapes (never bitten or attacked another dog, one of those socially inept, why do other dogs pick on me when i jump on them? Or greet them with my hackles up?) mostly due to his fearfulness. I've taken him to a behaviourist and now Riley is just a bit quirky at times (very quick to raise hackles, stiffen tail.. over rabbits). I discovered a local off lead spot on a river near where I am in Canberra, turns out the day was even better because the side of the river we were on was just us, whereas the other side was covered in dogs. In my instance there is actually no need for this separation at all, but it was nice to have exclusive river use! And it was good to have dogs all around us being busy and active without dogs necessarily interacting with us. The water was also a great drainer of energy for everybody! I'm not sure if you can figure out some equivalent watery spot to help? Also we often walked off lead in pouring rain, when nobody else was likely to appear, and really early on a Saturday morning or late on a Sunday when it was less likely to bump into other people and their dogs. Obviously I completely agree that nobody should be letting highly reactive dogs off lead without some sort of safety net in place. My post is just about off leads walks and exercises I have done to avoid other dogs. They certainly helped me to relax!

I've seen mine hoe into chicken poop like they just found a meaty bone. I've also watched them lick their butts and release an anal gland, watched them shove their noses into other people's crotches, watched them lick out each other's chops/lips after a tasty meal and of course, last but not least I've seen them stick their noses right up another dog's backside. No, no I don't let them lick my face if I can help it :).

Such wonderful photos everyone! I find something so excellent in watching dogs play in water. Some really great shots, thanks for sharing :) I'm going to come back here now every day to see more. I have just realised I'm missing a few photos from my computer er, hopefully back shortly with a bunch of photos. IF not I will be crying and hoping they are on a stored DvD somewhere :/ A damp Jazz in the rain will have to suffice for now. EDIT: Working out how to HTML and code on this. EDIT EDIT: I'm failing. Missing photos and skills in linking up pic from flickr. Be back with knowledge and photos.

Hi All (Long time no post for me!) Just thought with summer fast approaching we should have a thread dedicated to photos of wet dogs! I'm currently on the wrong computer to start off the trend, but I look forward to seeing everyone's cooled off pups below!

Good luck with it! Keep searching and rinsing with what you have. Any sign of ANY un-wellness jump in the car and drive! Mind you If you look at the pinned "tick" post at the top of the forum I've had a rough time with them lately! Small pup, I myself would be in the car in a flash if an ear went droopy! Just a reminder too folks PERMOXIN will kill a cat! Great for dogs, but if a cat even grooms the dog with it on, it will get very sick.

Some sad news. I work at a Veterinary clinic and we had a fellow come to see us recently. First up he came in with symptoms of paralysis on a Friday, after coming back from the coast (we're in Canberra - Canberra doesn't have ticks unless they hitch a ride from Syd or the coast and they will die over winter, can stay around somewhat in summer). The owners had spotted a tick on him and removed it, taken the dog straight to the vet. We treated him with anti-tick-venom (Not that ticks have venom?? But you get the gist) and saturated the guy in permoxin. Dog recovered well and went home. I answer the call from them the following Thursday, the dog is looking flat and weak in the hind legs again. The vet speaks directly with the owner and owner brings the dog back in. In the consult room the son finds a tick on the dog's neck! Dog is rushed out the back and we give another does of anti-venom. These figures are obviously not accurate but to give you an idea, about 1 in 100 dogs have an allergic (the immune system chucks a hissy fit at the foreign antibodies) reaction to anti-venom the first time it is given, the second time round the risk of an allergic reaction increases to about 10 in 100 dogs. The dog worsens and becomes completely paralytic, for the rest of Thurs we have to lubricate his eyes and move him about gently so he doesn't get sore, we also moisten his tongue so it doesn't get hard and thicken. He gets another does of a permoxin wash. Friday comes along and the dog has survived the night, but is not looking good. We give him oxygen to help his dropping oxygen levels in his blood. The dog is stablized, he can move his tongue again, we caught him swallowing a few times and once, just as I was leaving his ears shifted forwards. We put him on oxygen now all day to help him out. It's decided that the best action is to send him to the emergency vet who can monitor and keep the dog on oxygen all night. Away goes the dog, looking like his chances are now about 50/50. Sadly I came into work this morning and looked over the reports from the emergency vet, the dog's heart had stopped-apparently with the nurse right by his side. They of course administered adrenalin and attempted to resuscitate him. The following note had that the owners agreed not to continue resuscitation. The dog died. I spoke with the owner(and vet)who believe a rouge tick found it's way back onto the dog after the friday - despite the owners washing the dog's bedding etc. They had since thrown out all his bedding on the second attack. The owner also said that they had been visiting the coast now twice a year EVERY year since they had the dog. They had found ticks on him before and removed them, but never had any paralysis problems. To me, this was a stunning insight. You can take from this story whatever you like, but it is re-told as accurately as I can remember it. I wanted to share it with dog owners, because I myself had no idea how horrible tick paralysis was, how quickly it can set in but also - this case of one dog getting envenomed twice. The vets here say that dogs develop a kind of immunity to ticks if they grow up in a tick environment - this might be a comment to highlight the susceptibility of a Canberra dog who would never meet a tick unless it went to the coast, rather than claim "all coastal dogs are immune". But for me this has been a real eye-opener on tick paralysis and this seeming "randomness" of susceptibility. I hope this story helps you some how, and you all have a safe tick-free summer.

Brilliant photos! Seeing nudibranch(i?)('s?) swim is really cool too. This is a good example I don't know the video/owner. -
Clicking Mad I feel much the same way! All a bit of a rush at the end of the day. Your foam submission is really nice though - you def should upload your others. Krislin - bummer! Shell - how did you go?

Well I've got no macro, no ambition to turn my lens around and tape it to my camera o_O and an exam on the 21st - but what the heck: https://www.canon.com.au/en-au/worldofeos/photo5/2011-entries/entry-detail?mediaId=def5eac4-6a2e-4fb4-8044-93a9d72c1fd4&briefID=c81b2e6f-a864-4eb4-812b-5c632810a7de Just three more to go.... Anyone else still playing? EDIT : quite the "lol" moment when I pasted a link to a funny utube clip I had been sharing on facebook. *ahem* correct/relevant link now posted.

Beautiful ginger cat Dog is cute too, but love the stripes on the kitty

I'm actually going to guess a poodle X lab, just because of the square ears.

Just want to say that I stalk this forum and think all the photos are really good. All in their own way. It's great to see so much creativity and uniqueness in not only the breeds, but shots, styles and professionalism. Really impressive thread to browse through on a down day.

Was just about to post on my own facebook wall - then I finally got to the end of this post. Really pleased that you got the dogs back. What an aweful experience, but what a true show of comradery. Really pleased to read this ending.

Awesome photos guys! Thanks for sharing :D

Sorry Krislin, was just over excited. I can't see the new briefs, not too sure what I meant before. I think I meant I was just excited be be in the comp and looking forward to seeing them! I'll try to post the link to my entry dogfan. EDIT: This might work: http://www.canon.com.au/en-au/worldofeos/photo5/2011-entries/entry-detail?mediaId=74b34512-d690-409b-9032-c541517cdda4 Terranik I also couldn't decide between two shots! Annoying isn't it?

I concur. Had to laugh when the website wasn't actually up at all or working yesterday. I submitted mine this morning, but after some grief - I had to follow some conversations on facebook to work out that logging in to canon (not just the comp) meant that I could actually write a description. You would think they would have been a little more ready than evidently they weren't. Got two photos right on the last day (Technically last day before entry) and tossed up between which one to enter, I think I maybe went with the wrong one, but ah such is life. Very excited to be seeing the other briefs now! FYI - Facebook Canon mentioned that if you are entering, to start briefs before you recieve your box in the mail if they are already up on the website. This sound a bit ominous for the amount of time free to think and shoot! Glad you all got in ok in the end, it was very frustrating

Awesome Persephone! Where abouts do you call home then? -
I'm going in! Still swirling with ideas, but think it will be fun Does anyone know when the uploading period finishes? I think maybe this was in a different post by Roxy's Mum - but I don't quite understand the info. Good luck everyone, I don't want to know your ideas - but how are they all coming along? Faye

They are really cool photos Well done! Oh and... "I think OH is taking me/us shopping tomorrow to look at the 50mm 1.8 (or maybe 1.4) - I think that lens is awesome and would suit what I like taking pics of." I'm a bit jealous. lol A lovely OH you have there ;)
