  1. Hi everyone, I have yet another question regarding toileting, but it's more about location than training. I have had Chestnut (miniature smooth male dachshund) for 1 week and 5 days, and he is now 9 weeks and 5 days old. We have been using an indoor doggy toilet to toilet train him (It's a piece of fake grass over kitty litter in a tub). It is inside his play pen (piccy attached). At first, every hour on the hour we would take him to it and reward him with treats for peeing or pooping. Now we interchange confining him to a crate with confining him on our laps for a sleep or on a mat at our feet with a chewtoy. It's working okay but have had more accidents since we made this change. My question is this: Should I move his indoor doggy toilet outside on the porch while I am at home and take him there on a lead every hour? Or will this now confuse him as we have been asking him to pee indoors for the past week and 5 days? Our puppy school trainer strongly suggested we make this move, so I guess that is the right thing to do, I'm just concerned the change of location will result in a backtracking with the toilet training. Any ideas? I'm really trying to do the right thing, it's just hard to know what's right sometimes! Thanks in advance
  2. I'm going to CLEAR puppy training in January. Went along a few months back observe their classes, and it had everything we were looking for. HEre's their website if you're interested: http://www.cleardogtraining.com/
  3. I can't remember whether I have already sent you a message or not Nadz but your plan is my plan almost word for word! And we are also getting a miniature dachie! I am relying on him being food motivated as well, I have six puppy kongs ready to go! Not to mention the long term confinement area with a fake grass doggy toilet, water bowl and dog crate.. still a few things to get but we've got most of what's on our list! When do you get your pup? We are bringing our Chestnut home around the 9th of January, hopefully a little earlier. Have you looked at the dachshund breed sub forum? Lot's of proud dachie owners there. Actually, I have been wondering about the car harness too.. I want to get one before he arrives so I think I'll get the crate/seat belt attachment first then maybe a seatbelt attachment for his harness later... Also have you seen the "Ultimate Puppy Toolkit"? I got one form a pet store after being reccommended it by a puppy school. It has LOADS of practical information on obedience, games, prevention training etc. Well worth it if you can find it. Anyway, good luck! I hope to hear more PS- I've found selecting harnesses difficult too because he will be so small. In the end I just bought a collar and a harness and will adjust them or get new ones if they don't fit.
  4. Hi Genolium, I am getting my puppy son too- 5 weeks to go and counting! I have researched A LOT about toilet training as it is so important to get right from day one.. this website is fantastic and describes how to implement an errorless toilet training programme: http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/errorless-housetraining Also download the books "Before you get your puppy" and "After you get your puppy" here: http://www.dogstardaily.com/free-downloads I have read them both and have heard loads of people having success with this method. I'm going to try it so fingers crossed! Good luck, let us know how you get on with your trianing programme, there is so much to learn and remember! Caroline.

    Walking Poos

Hey there, this link might be of interest- http://www.dogstardaily.com/radio click play on season 2 episode 2, skip forward to 22 mins 50 secs where Ian Dunbar describes how he trains dogs to go in the one spot reliably. Hope it helps!
  6. Hi Judy, I have had a look at "CLEAR Puppy training" and they were just what I was looking for in a puppy school. Their website is here: http://www.cleardogtraining.com.au/ I went along to a sunday session and walked around and listened in, the staff were more than happy to answer questions so call them if you like. They advocate the methods used by Dr Ian Dunbar which was why I called them in the first place. I'm new to Brisbane but from memory their training grounds were on the northside of the river. I'll be taking my future puppy there in January =) Hope that helps =)
  7. This is all really helpful for me too, so thanks Corvus and Kiesha for your input. I think the training word dictionary is a really good idea. My partner and I are going to write a list of all the situations we want our puppy to be comfortable in. So for example walking past traffic, walking past construciton sites, on the beach, being around boats, being around other animals, being in the car etc etc. Are you thinking of doing this Lucy's Mum? We're going to write down all these things and then set a schedule so we can (hopefuly!) achieve them all. I've got to say this limited timeframe of the pup's 'socialisation period' makes all this training a bit of a time challenge! All the best Lucy's Mum, I'm sure you're as prepared as can be!
