Is Murray Bridge too far? I think they train on Sunday afternoon. Their contact details are on the Dogs SA website. -

Riverland Odc Trials - August 2008

My boy does pretty well, much better than I do actually. I get pretty nervous in the ring. He's the first dog I've trained so we're learning together. We got our CCD title and first novice pass in October but haven't trialled since then. I can just imagine your boy trying to work out why the people are following him around the ring. Where are the Retrieving Championships being held in Meningie? Lived down that way for a while. -

I can let you know about the schedule, etc. closer to the date :D. I believe the local caravan park accepts dogs but I'll double check that for you. You can camp on the grounds, there are toilets/shower facilities but no power. There is catering on the grounds too, breakfast, lunch and snacks and stuff. Loxton is maybe 30kms from Barmera, easy trip. I never knew about the Recreational Vehicle Expo there. Might look into that myself. Nope not the greys, I just started trialling with my whippet last year. We're in novice atm. You're driving down? What an awesome trip! -

It's in Barmera. Just up the road from Berri. I'll be there What info do you need? -
One of my greyhounds had one of these on her side right over her ribs. It went away by itself, about 6 or 7 weeks total.

Shar Pei / Obedience Trialling?
kdf replied to Miss Squish's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well I don't have a Shar Pei but I do have a Whippet. I don't think there are many of them in the trial ring either. We just entered a mock trial on the weekend and got a nice passing score so I'm really happy and so proud of my boy. Next step is a real trial. -
Someone told me that they had great success with Great Barko for weight gain. I started feeding it to one of my greys and it worked for him too. I only feed it 50/50 with another dry food but it really worked and he looks great.

I don't have any experience with the cancer stuff but I do have a dog who is missing one of the "wings" from one of the vertebrae in his neck (from injury). I haven't seen the xrays of my boy but I've been told the wing is completely gone. His head tilts a bit to one side because of it but you really wouldn't notice if you didn't already know about it. Wishing the best for your girl.

I have a no-pull harness from Wiggles, Wags, & Whiskers ( link ) which is a harness with the loop like a martingale collar. I use it on my greyhound since he has a permanent neck injury. I really like this harness and my boy doesn't seem to have any issues wearing it at all. The normal harness I had before would irritate the area behind his legs and they'd be red after he had it on (even if he only wore it for a short while) but we haven't had that problem since switching over. I don't see why you couldn't leave it on her while she runs but you'd probably be best asking the person you buy the harness from.

I don't leave martingales on either, they're just for walks. I have a plain collar with their tags on them all the time though. I buy my martingales from the USA because I haven't been able to find any I really like over here. Just ordered another one today actually :D
-
I brought a cheaper one too but it just keeps going and going. I'm waiting for it to die so I'll have an excuse to buy a cordless dremel but I guess the one I have is built to last :D ;)

I think $950 each is very high for 1 extraction! Mine all had quite a bit done (their teeth weren't in great shape when I got them). I just had a look back at the bills and the highest was $456.95 and this included multiple extractions, pre-op blood tests ($69), pain meds and antibiotics.
-
I've had 3 dentals done with my greys in the last 2 years, all with some extractions (only one had a canine removed). Bills were $400-$450. If the $950 was for both dogs I don't think it's too bad.

I used to go to that club I just moved at the end of last year. I never used a chain on my dog and I don't even remember it being an issue. My new club insists on the dogs wearing a chain and I still use a martingale or leather slip collar, it works for him so I see no need to change.

Do you mind me asking where you brought them? Mine are just normal dog coats and don't fit the sleek greyhound shape as well as I'd like

My whippet and greys all have coats. The greys have shower proof coats with fuzzies inside to keep them warm. They usually only want to go outside for pee breaks if it's raining anyway so shower proof is fine for them. I want to find something light for them to wear around the house but I haven't found anything I like yet. I wish I could make my own but I just barely passed home ec. sewing . Dallas has a polar fleece coat and a drizabone waterproof coat. He's already used the polar fleece coat at obedience class this year because he was cold in class, and just try and do a 3 minute stay with a shivering whippet ;) . We also train in winter and he's fine as long as he's not soggy so the drizabone is great. I've got a coat for Max too, but he looks at me as if to say, "Look woman! I have fur!!!" so he doesn't actually wear it much.

We upgraded to grade 5 this week Thanks again for the help.

Perfect this week! I got there early and took him for a walk right across the oval (it's pretty big). We were just goofing around, playing and stuff. There are some big concrete tunnels left over from a kids playground and we played around going through them, him waiting in a sit on the other side until I called him through (he loves the tunnel). It was pretty hot yesterday which may have had something to do with it too but I feel I have more options now and that we'll get there in time. We started learning to sit up from a drop with a hand signal from a distance last night. He is picking this up really quickly. Thanks for all the help

He is exercised normally on training days. I could do a little more I guess, see how that goes. Although we do train right next to the Greyhound track...

He's only just 2 years old and really friendly and energetic, class is really fun for him. I personally think he may just be having fun because does the circle but always comes right in and sits in front of me with a wagging tail and a grin on his face. I believe he does know what he's supposed to do because he does actually do it, just with a slight detour in the middle His recall is good out of class, I take him to the river in summer and he always comes without fail. And at a friend's bbq this summer he came to me every time I called even with 4 other whippets, a kelpie and 2 GSD X's running around. It's a bit hit and miss to decide what distance is too far for him to come right in because it doesn't take long for him to get a little speed 20 feet wouldn't be long enough for the rope thing because at that distance he will come straight in 100% of the time I'm not sure it would work so well at longer distances (maybe too much rope to handle). I do have some small food treats with me as we just started training again but maybe packsapunch has an idea with the squeaky toy. I might ask my instructor if I could do that. Thanks for all the help. My next class is Wednesday so I'll see what happens and report back

Dallas and I are in level 4 in our obedience class. We're doing off-leash heelwork, sit stay, down stay, and he's fine in everything except recall. He will come straight to me if it's a short recall but if I'm at a distance where he can get up to any sort of speed he will veer away at the last second and do a complete circle around me (maybe 10-15 metre diameter) then come and sit in front of me as he is supposed to. And does this in every recall now, always returning and sitting in front of me. My instructor told me to practice with a fence or something behind me but he seems to love showing off in front of the class because whenever we practice alone he is always perfect Any advice?

I feed my dogs Supercoat. They all prefer it when I add a little warm water to it. Also there are certain kinds of supercoat I can't buy because none of my dogs will eat it. They will only have the adult chicken and the energy.
