  1. I don't think there's a name. She bought it off eBay I think. Ivy loved wearing it, she was strutting around lol. She didn't like her cool coat when she was a puppy but the rain coat was absolutely fine. Sounding a bit like a sales person for Hurtta here but they do make a raincoat with legs like that. http://www.eurodogdesigns.com/Hurtta-Outdoor-Overalls_p_67.html I do like the Hurtta one. It doesn't really rain enough for my to justify buying one though so I'm happy with mine.

  3. My sister gave me this rain coat for my aussie :D Love the back view   My kelpie hates coats, she prefers to sleep under blankets. She won't even pee while wearing one, I have to take it off her for toilet breaks. The greyhounds of course love theirs.
  4. I took my kelpie for a walk in town last night (can't walk out where I live after dark). She freaked out over a sunflower growing in someone's yard and a subway napkin trapped in a rose bush. She also has a strange fear of heights, there's a wall with maybe a 1 metre drop by the river and she creeps past like she's about to fall off the side (normal footpath width) and yet happily does agility contacts with no issues or fears.
  5. As a rate payer in the area I can't see how the council can justify spending $30,000 on a dog park either. For that cost I'd rather see bag dispensers installed along the river, walking trials and skate park area (and therefore people having no excuse for not picking up after their dogs), existing leash laws actively policed (and repeat offenders actually fined for a change) and an area such as lock 5 opened up for leash free use during suitable hours. I'm with ya :) I'd like them to do anything at all for those of us with dogs. We pay rates and dog registrations every year too and so far the only dog related things I see are signs warning people to not take their dogs on the sporting ovals. But it is the law, there is supposed to be somewhere that people can legally take their dogs for a run. Unfortunately bag dispensers don't always work either. Most dog parks have bag dispensers and they are filled with crap that people are too lazy to pick up. An obedience club I went to held classes in a fenced dog park. The 15 minutes before class was always poop patrol. eta And if the park is anything like the one in the next town over they might as well save their money. The one time I went there a large male kelpie was able to duck right under the fence with no problem at all. The fence was all but useless for anything smaller than a great dane! Hopefully they've fixed it.
  6. All this talk of off leash areas, fenced our unfenced, has me jealous. Technically my town doesn't have any. They're now in the planning stages of a dog park, with one councillor quoted as saying he couldn't justify the costs and that it should be up to the dog obedience club to organise. Similar thing happen to me. Found a dog but it did have id. We called the owner who said she'd come and pick it up. I had my own dogs in the car with the ac running. I sat outside with the dog for about 15 minutes and she never arrived. Called her again and she said she was actually at a party and would be a while. I told her if she wasn't there in 5 minutes I was calling the council and when she still didn't arrive I then did exactly that. By the time the council arrived my dogs had been stuck in my car on the side of the road for nearly an hour! Council guy was shocked at the woman's behavior. She finally turned up about 10 minutes after the council did. The dog was already in his vehicle. I got daggers shot at me by the owner. I really REALLY hope he fined her.
  7. Puppy was busted about to steal food from my plate when I left the table. She decided on snatch and run. Unfortunately for her she snatched the lemon wedge  The look on her face was priceless!
  8. My George. I lost him to cancer May of 2012. And nine days after that Lani went with bone cancer. This is Stevie at 10 and a half. My boy started going grey at 3 or 4. Every day I have with him is special. Right now he's drooling on my pillow, he's lucky I love him  I do love puppies but there is something very special about old dogs.
  9. My vet tattoos both males and females. My whippet was tattooed 11 years ago and my kelpie nearly 5 years ago, they're both still perfectly clear.
  10. I've taken greyhounds directly from the trainer, one from GAP, a puppy from the AWL and a puppy from a shelter. This year I got my first puppy from a registered breeder, I would do any of them again except for the shelter, the shelter dog is awesome so it's not because of the dog :) . If I could never get another purebred from a breeder I'd go with a rescue group. When I get another greyhound definitely GAP or a trainer I trusted and a dog I tested :) .
  11. Especially when they're either too embarrassed or just don't care enough to tell you that their dog just peed on the shelf of dog food or the leash display rack! Seriously it happens sometimes, just tell me so I can clean it right away! One of mine is anxious at the clinic, he usually ends up on the seat next to me or trying to get on my lap. I don't encourage him to get on the chair but don't push him off either.
  12. Yep, exactly what I was thinking  I had so many mothers snatching their kids out of the way of my big muzzled dogs. But when they passed the green collar test through GAP I suddenly had to start intercepting kids from running up and hugging my dogs while their mothers just looked on. Same dog but now that they could potentially bite they're seen as okay. Luckily they're great with kids because I've had the odd one ambush us or slip past and their parents just let it happen. My experience with Asian tourists is that they take a million photos of greyhounds. There must be hundreds of photos of my dogs floating around overseas   The best experience I had with my muzzled greys was a dog phobic woman. She was walking past with her bf and my dogs were calmly walking and wagging their tails hoping for a pat. He asked if they were friendly and when I said yes he asked if she could maybe pat them. He reasoned with her that they were the best ones to pat because they couldn't even bite her anyway. It was really cool seeing her trying to get over her phobia and hopefully my dogs helped her in some small way.
  13. I have a crate and some beds in my bedroom. My bed seems to be the preferred spot though.
  14. My greyhounds get a fair bit of attention and the aussie pup does too. Around here it seems no one is very interested in a kelpie so poor Ellie (who LOVES attention and pats, especially from kids) is pretty much ignored. I usually don't mind stopping for a chat or for people to pat the dogs, our walks are social and we're usually not busy/in any kind of rush when we're out. I find it a bit strange when they take photos but I don't say anything, in my head I'm thinking why do you want photos of a stranger's dog??? I find this odd, as my Aussie gets the opposite. Almost everyone tells me he is a Koolie!I was going to comment that there seem to be alot of Koolie experts around here. People are always saying my Aussie is one too, although I've definitely seen more Aussies than Koolies around here so I don't know where this expertise is coming from  Yep, my Aussie girl gets Koolie a lot or the nbt makes them think Stumpy Tail X. People think my whippet is a grey all the time. He is a big whippet but nowhere near greyhound size. Can't say it's ever offended me though  I usually say no, he's a whippet not a greyhound then nod as they exclaim how big he is  He's only 17kgs so not exactly huge
  15. Depressing. I foster and try to promote the breed as pets. Those numbers are awful but not something I didn't already know. Hit me on a bad night or something though because it's got me thinking how little one person, or even one adoption group, can actually do. My (maybe) couple dozen fosters and my own adopted dogs are not even a drop in the bucket of the 17000 dogs a year they quoted. Hardly anything at all. I do know some people in the industry. Good ones who've shed tears over lost dogs and kept pets of their failed racers. Or the one that paid for surgery for an injured unraced puppy so they could rehome him when many would have just PTS. On the other side is one of my dogs who had a disgusting excuse for a human being as his owner/trainer. I think (sincerely hope!) that he isn't still racing after what he did to my gorgeous boy.
  16. I have a Kramar one which has an adjustable click. It's pretty quiet when it's on it's quietest setting.
  17. I've had greyhounds, a whippet and a kelpie and now have an aussie pup. Love the greys and will have more eventually. Fantastic dogs. My whippet is a special boy and I don't think I could get another after he's gone. I think it'd be too hard to not compare them and that's never fair. I think I like my kelpie Ellie so much more than I like the breed (if that makes sense to anyone but me  ) and probably wouldn't get another. She wasn't planned but I fell in love with her. Best decision to keep her but not the breed for me. I waited 5 years to get my aussie (was planning when Ellie came into my life and had to wait for an appropriate age gap). Love this breed and can easily imagine more in my lifetime. There are other breeds I'm interested in so who knows what the future holds.
  18. Everyone we meet is a potential future greyhound adopter :D so even though I'm not usually the chatty type with strangers I'm happy to talk about my greyhounds. Parents are sometimes wary of big dogs so if their kids look like they really want to pat them I'll let the parents know that my guys are friendly too. My guys like attention and love well behaved kids. It's harder with the puppy. She's not quite 5 months yet and is fluffy and cute and really loves everyone. People just rush up and get her revved up and super excited. If they ask and take it easy it's fine but too many don't.
  19. My aunty used to breed and show Shih Tzu's and I swear my uncle's favourite joke was "What do you call a zoo with no animals"..."a sh!t zoo" Kinda funny when you know they're joking  . Just sad when you know they're not.
  20. I had someone ask me how to spell Shih Tzu. She literally wrote Sh!tzoo Um, no  How can you own a dog and not even know how to spell the breed??? I've had my greys confused as whippets and a having a bigish whippet (16/17kg) means people always think he's a greyhound. I had to walk away from an elderly man who was trying to have an argument with me about my whippet being a greyhound. I know what breed my dog is but I don't really care enough to stay and prove to you that I'm right! My Aussie Shep is 18 weeks old and I think I've only had one person that actually knew what breed she was without being told. Most tell her how cute she is though so they're forgiven  Most think she's either a Koolie cross because she's blue or a Stumpy Cattle Dog cross because she's a bob.
  21. Now you mention it kdf when I first satrted fostering I had and information book to help me. One of the points for ex-race dogs was the startle reflex that HW mentioned. I remember waking up one night and tried to push Stan over in bed and he growled at me, just not used to being woken in a deep sleep. As you said he's fine with it now, he's used to me shoving his big butt over he just groans now  In kennels they're usually woken up long before anyone has a chance to actually touch them. It's especially not fun in the dark in the middle of the night. I usually wake up like this --->
  22. He may be unused to other dogs waking him up if he was an only dog. Some of my foster greys have been like that at first but they quickly get used to it. I'm so glad he's got a great home.
  23. This is my girl Lani on the day I adopted her. All that muscle! I got yelled at more than once telling me to feed my dog while she was in that condition. She was the laziest dog on the planet though (retired after 5 races lol) so while she still had a rib or 2 visible all her life that built look didn't last long. My other girl, Stacy, never ever looked like Lani. She hardly had a rib visible even in her racing days. They were built very differently.
