Waiting For A Puppy This Thread Is For You
aussielover replied to jess live die's topic in Puppy Chat
Cute pics!!!! I will find out if I can get my puppy on Tuesday! Am very nervous! -
By the way, your puppy is sooooooooooo adorable!!!!!!! I want him!!!!!
-
That is interesting!!! Do you have a link to the paper? or even the name of the journal it was published in? I am interested in doing some research on guide dogs as an honours project, and it would be intersting to follow this up in Australia as I believe (at least guide dogs NSW) still desex their animals at 6 months of age.
-
It will be cheaper for you to get it done before 6 months... once they are over say 30kg , it becomes more expensive- more anaesthetic to use etc. But you should really get it done whenever YOU feel ready for it to happen. I have seen hundreds of animals get desexed at 6 months and can't say I have heard of any problems. To be honest, I don't think it makes a great deal of difference when they are desexed (different in giant breeds), I mean the rscpca and shelters desex at like 8weeks of age. Can I ask those who have had their dogs done at over 6months, what was the specific reason for this? I don't have a problem with when people choose to desex their pets- better late than never!!! And I think an 8 week old puppy is probably too young for my personal preference- but it is commonly done.

Oscar is absolutely adorable!!!! -
Please bring your crate into your room and let the puppy know she's not alone. You can always move it to another area of the house later . Your puppy is a pack animal who has been taken away from her pack. Of course she is frightened and is crying for help in the only way she knows. In the wild a baby pack animal separated from the pack will die. All her instincts tell her to scream for help until the pack find her and she is safe again. You're not giving in to her or molly coddling her by letting her know you're around. You're just giving her an environment where she can feel secure. What if you can't bring the pup into your bedroom- my bedroom is upstairs and there is no way my parents would let me have the puppy upstairs! Should I sleep downstairs with the puppy for the first few nights?

Does Desexing Really Make A Difference
aussielover replied to Lucy's mama's topic in General Dog Discussion
While it is probably unlikely that desexing will make a difference, if you intend to get him desexed anyway, you might as well do it now. There is a small chance that it may help the problem (unlikely but maybe worth a try). Of course I agree you need to continue the training and get some more tips of what to do when he is naughty. Edit- 8 months is a pretty common age for dogs to be desexed. Any reason why you want to keep him entire for longer? -
What Can I Do With My Lovely Jack Russell
aussielover replied to hshen's topic in General Dog Discussion
Maybe ask your local vets to advertise as well? A Jack Russell Rescue group might be able to help you (if there is one?)- there are a few rescue groups in Sydney that have a no kill policy eg. Monika's doggy rescue and sydney pet rescue, but I am not sure if they only take animals from pound etc. Best to contact them yourself Or could you contact your breeder (if he was from a breeder) to help you rehome him? -
My sister and I were totally outraged when we saw that last night. There was lots of yelling at the TV. The police woman said she was a dog lover, but then said she was "totally fine" with killing an innocent puppy. No dog lover would happily accept killing an innocent dog. Anyone could see the puppy was totally friendly and not a threat to anyone. The owner was a bit of a loser though and didn't help the situation. I agree with removing the dog from a situation where it could have potenitally be used for fighting but couldn't they just have neutered and then rehomed to a responsible person? I always thought the UK was better for dogs (they are allowed in more public places etc) but now I think not. RIP baby puppy

We originally were planning on getting an 8 wk old puppy, but there was only one female available, who was "show quality"- it was $2000 which was too expensive for us. We got another older pup from the breeder, who was going to be used as a breeding dog, but luckily ended up with us!!! she was the perfect dog too! I've noticed that older pups seem to be cheaper... I suppose that is becuase everyone wants a baby puppy?

Triangle Of Temptation
aussielover replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi, Thanks for posting this, The program sounds like it has helped a lot of people. Would you recommend starting this program on the first day you get your puppy (pup will be 8wks old). Is it ok to do this inside as I am worried the pup will get cold outside and I want it to eat inside anyway? If I want to clicker train my dog later on, should I start with the clicker instead of the "yes"? Or can I just use yes and then later condition the dog to the clicker? -
Is it ruptured? A freind of mine also has a 40+kg Goldie who has a cruciate ligament injury. His is not fully ruptured though. They also went with conservative management and he can now walk short distances and have a bit of a run around every now and then. Is the dog overweight? It might be an idea for them to try and get some weight off him as well as cage rest/restricted exercise. Dogs that are overwight tend to blow the surgery anyway or just do the other leg! which would be quite a waste of money.

VERY cute rottie pup! -
Gorgeous Dogs!!!!

You can't seroiusly expect anyone to give money to her. If he is rescused, and I hope he is, surely the money should go to the pound, not the irresponsible owner. I thought, once you surrendered an animal, you have no resposibility for them and you can't receive payment as they belong to the pound now?
-
Thanks for your answers. Guide Dogs will be providing a crate, I have already spoken to them and they say they recommend crate training. Basically, they want the dog trained to be able to sleep inside all night without having an accident. I assume when I go to pick up the puppy they will provide further information on training etc, there are also regular trianing days for puppy raisers to attend. I thought I would just read up before, so I can buy anything extra I might needs and get the house set up.

I'd really love to have an Aussie, a GSP and a Bernese Mountain Dog. Do you think they woulg get on?
-
What is a telomian?
-
They will learn by buying one that has a multitude of health and/or behavioural problems, not to mention are an absolute nighmare to groom! Unfortunately, this will not be a pleasant experience for them, and may put them off dogs for life Of course there are some lovely crossbreds out there without any problems, but you never know which you will get....
-
I vote for a GSP. Every single one I have met has been lovely! One of my favourite dogs at the moment is a GSP. They are very clever, would be great for obedience and agility. They do require a fair amount of exercise and training, but once they are trained they are amazing! I think, as long as they are able to be with you, they would be ok. An Aussie Shepherd is also a wondeful dog, some of them are not as energetic and generally only require 1-2hrs of exercise. They are also great at agility and obedience if you have the time. But you seem pretty keen on gundogs, so I would go for a GSP.
-
That is horrible! Vets should provide emergency treatment immediately! Legally, they have to provide pain relief at the minimum. How expensive is it to get the animal on oxygen and give pain relief? It would not be $300. I don't know why they demanded that much, surely they could ask for payment later if further procedures (radiographs, surgery etc) were neccesary? And then to have the nerve to keep the rest of your money by letting you spend it at the same place another time- as if you'd go back there after that experience I am sorry this has happened to you.

What are those cancers that become more likely with desexing?
-
I have heard they are trying to train dogs to detect cancer
