  1. Very cute! I'm sure blue eyes would make a great selling point. we once had a family adopt a kitten. It was too young to go at the time they saw it an when they came back they wer elike "no thats not our kitten, ours had blue eyes" At least they took it anyway
  2. All young puppies have blue eyes I'd quite like a silva lab too. How about a mini german sheppard cross with a dash-hound?
  3. After recently receiving advice from Mindy's puuppy contact, I have started giving her "checks" on leash if she starts sniffing or gets otherwise distracted. I feel bad saying this but its actually been much more effective than getting her to look at me or her focus on me because it means she can still look ahead at the distraction but not go mental about it. I have been trying to use mainly positive methods with her but this correction has seemed to be more effective in acheiving a calm focussed walk. I'm not pulling her hard, just giving a quick tug on the leash (she has been remarkably recepetive to it so far) and only on a flat or martingale collar. Has anyone had any bad experiences with using this method, or do you think its ok?
  4. what is a lamb flap please? I went to the butcher to get some the other day and they didn't even know! They ended up giving me some weird rib type thing and two "dog bones" which are god knows what- looks like a femur of some sort, probably lamb judging by size- is that ok for a largeish dog to eat? I sometimes give mine a lamb shank but take it away before she can actually start to eat the bone, just to give her teeth a workout and a bit of a clean. There is also a fair amount of meat on that type of bone (people it- yuck ) I used to let my old dog eat the whole bone as she actually chewed her food unlike Miss Vaccum Cleaner.
  5. What an awful thing for you to go through. So sorry for the loss of a very loved family member. I will keep your family in my thoughts. RIP beautiful Riley
  6. Would you say I had alot of hair? way to much
  7. Oh my, what a cutie I'd be hopeless at trying to discipline him! My puppy was a bit like that (though not as bad by the sounds it of!) until quite recently, like, 2 weeks ago (5 months old). Now she is great to walk- moves forward really nicely and deals with distraction very well 90% of the time. So maybe it is an age thing. I wouldn't pick him up and take him back in (ie give him want he wants) until he does at least a few steps forward. Can you bribe him forward with some yummy food or something? I did a lot of leash work in the house and yard to try to overcome Mindy's stubborness. I would scatter distractions such as toys and when she went to stop and try and get them I gave her the command "leave it" and if she did, then a treat. If she didn't i'd give a short sharp tug on the leash and as soon as she moved forward again i'd treat her. However, he may be too scared to listen to you? Maybe try in "his" area first where he feels comfortable. Are you going to a puppy school- they may be able to give you some tips. To get his confidence up, maybe try carrying him (if u can LOL) and just hold him outside for a bit while he figured things out? I have also heard that bullmastiffs are a bit lazy! He may not really want to move at all
  8. Yes, thats true, at our puppy school we are provided with the treats. mindy is on a special diet for the moment, which means she can't have them (they are high in processed meats and fats) and has to have boiled chicken for treats instead. So I have all the puppies hanging around me now
  9. Don't let the Dodgy Brothers Kennels get hold of one of these. Their beady little eyes will light up at the truly amazing & rare 'breeds' they could produce with a Schnoodelgroodlecockerroodle.. Only work would be... what other breed to mix it with, where to tack the other breed name on....& how big to make the price. This thread is so close to reality. I keep reading the posts & thinking....'Yes, that happens!'. Well obviously, the longer the name, the more justified you are to charge the higher price. how about crossing it with a spanalabradanepointador? think of what you chrage if you combined those two!!! They are also guaranteeed never to have any health problems and are hyper sorry hypoallerggenic and dont need any training.
  10. Nope. Don't do oodles. No money in those anymore. Its "developing breeds" where the cash is. Oodle breeding is for amateurs Do u think? Becoz i sell my Schnoodlegroodlecockerroodles for $5000 not including papers or health testing. I only charge $1000 xtra for papers and $2000 xtra for getting a vet to sign a fake doco ahem, *health testing*. vacionations and wormings are included because i am such an ethical responisble breeder but I just dilute the doses down a bit to save some money.its not like they really need the hole dose.
  11. i'm looking to sell my two labradogroodles, perhaps in exchange for a jungle rockwheeler? They are a breeding pair, very efficient at pumping out the products. They do have some hip problem which means they can't really walk properly, but they can still do you know what, so are still vaulable assests. anyway if you cross them with another breed like the schnoodlemoodlechi then the hybrid vigor will overcome these problems anway.
  12. I feed Mindy at around 4pm and she hold on until morning. She woke me up to go outside last night at 1.30am though because she was given some left overs which obviously did not agree with her. I'm just glad she let me know she wanted to go out as I have carpet in my room!
  13. Makes perfect sense. Thats what I was sorta thinking people would be thinking. I started the thread to see if that was the general thinking. you will find a lot of us on here dont have "general thinking" in regards to matters like this I know myself, I had my heart set on a particular breed (rarer breed) and cost wasn't really a factor. Personally I prefer to have contact with a number of breeders who may or may not have pups currently, contact them and talk with them and see which ones I particularly like, rather than just looking at price. You will notice a lot of the ads on the DOL webpage don't even have a price listed.
  14. I would also suggest you look into canine medicine specialists or small animal medicine specialists as they may have seen a few cases of this before as well. Maybe contact you breeder or the Shar Pei breed club and see which vets they use? I hope your doggie feels better soon
  15. I'd be speaking to the breeder and asking what healthy testing, importing etc they are doing and then decide if it justifies the cost. However, breeder have a right to charge whatever they like, and I don't think they should neccesarily not make a profit or at least be able to break even. I don't have a problem on them making a small profit, if they are improving the breed, doing all the right things and people are obviously willing to pay that much. But TBH if I had my heart set on a particular breed and found a really awesome breeder, that did all the right things, I would be happy to pay whatever they were asking, within reason (its not like i'd be paying a million dollars or anything ). To me it is more about whether the potential pup will be suitable for my lifestyle and personality and that everything possible has been done to give it the highest chances of having a happy, healthy and hopefully long life. I actually know someone who was a puppy raiser for assistance dogs who offered them $40 000 to keep the pup (the cost of producing a fullly trained dog). The dog failed in the end, so they ended up getting him back anyway, I bet assistance dogs were thinking they should have taken the $40000 :D
  16. As a kid I used take my aussie shepherd when i went for a bike ride. We used a harness for her but just held onto the lead or looped it around the bike handle (not very safe i know). We rode on the footpath for a short time but mainly on actual bike paths. I'm not sure if its legal. I wouldn't want my dog running on the road, I find riding my bike on sydney roads by myself bad enough with all the aggro drivers! It is illegal to ride on the footpath for adults, so i;m guessing riding with your dog would also be illegal. Not sure about on those shared walking/bike paths I assume thats is ok?
  17. Did the vet take a blood sample before giving the meds. I think it is quite likely, as part of the investigation of the cause of her clinical signs. As long as the kidney and liver blood results are within the normal range, there is low risk of problems occuring. I am not sure I would personally use NSAIDs if the dog has a disease that predisposes it to kidney problems, but I would have to read up a bit on Sharpei fever and the mechanism for causing kidney problems first. Sorry I am confused if she has had both cortisone and rimadyl? They are not generally used together but your vet would be able to tell you more. I agree about seeing a specialist.
  18. God, I've really been struggling with this one! The only way I can get the movement is to have a ribboon looped around her ears and then dangling in her face. I started putting the hand signal on it after a few sessions, and I thought all was going ok... but now when i tried without the ribbon, she has no idea and ends up offering every trick shes got LOL So i'm, guessing she's associating the ribbon and maybe thinks the command is "bat the ribbon away"??? any ideas? I've tried smearing food on her face and putting sticky tape on it as well, but hasn't wokred
  19. I'm up at 5.30am as well. Keeping her up longer at night doesn't really help.
  20. No treats??? how did you train her then? toys? I'm surprised they expected all puppies to use toys as a reward.
  21. Thanks K9, great explanation and insight as usual :D. I would be definitely be seeking help from a behaviourist then!
  22. whats the point of a school if everyone is already well behaved and knows everything? It wouldn't have surprised me if it was dogs in the lower classes, but it was actually worse in the dogs in the "higher" levels. I would have thought teaching a dog to be quiet and calm around other dogs would be one of the most basic things to achieve before progressing to more challenging things :D I could totally understand if an effort was being made by the trainer to help a dog, like Banjo, who had barking issues, but there was no attempt made by anyone to get these dogs to be quiet. When I raised some concerns after class, the only response i got was that "the dogs were excited" and about my own dogs ability to handle the class "she'll get over it, she has a nice sit"
  23. How is she behaved at obedience? When i took my pup to obedience I found that the MANY dogs that were non stop barking didn't really make for a nice environment for me or for her. Really, you'd think an obedience school would have better behaved dogs LOL
  24. K9: So do you mean that even if Dupree is removed, the rank drive in Kuma has been triggered and he may start to challenge his owners?
