  1. I could crate her and go back to bed but I find it hard to fall asleep again after getting up. So qld doesn't get daylight savings then?
  2. Mindy is up at6.30-7 now due to daylight saving yay!
  3. I feed my 6 month old lab puppy 2-3 cups of puppy dry plus bones
  4. We use puppy food if we need to get some weight on elderly dogs or dogs that have been recovering from illness. You could just feed less of it if they won't eat anything else though
  5. I've never heard of that before. I would recommend staying on puppy food until the pup has stopped growing. Puppy food has a different calcium:phosphate ratio i believe? (maybe just large breed puppy foods???) and is also more energy-dense, so you'd have to feed more of the adult food to maintain condition on your pup. I'm pretty sure all puppies go through a gangly stage (to some degree) and this is a lot more dependent on hormones, rather than food. Do you think maybe the breeder meant 12 months not 12 weeks?
  6. that puppy just looks sooo cheeky! I bet she's keeping you on your toes LOL
  7. Sorry I completely disagree with this. The fact that your dog may have had APBT in him and the fact that he became "aggressive" towards your daughter are in no way related. And believe me, if he had truely wanted to do damage he most certainly would have. Most dogs need more than "affection, love, regular walks, played with every day, given all the love in the world". They need rules, structure, disapline and (for some) a LOT of training and mental stimulation. The fact that your dog lashed out may have had very little to do with bad breeding or true aggression and more to do with a combination of the dogs personality, poor pack structure and/or lack of respect for you/your child as the dogs "pack leader". Without seeking the advice of a professional you would not know this. And taking an "aggressive" dog to the pound is extremely irresponsible IMO. What were they to do with him? Two options there, rehome or PTS - and no-one rehomes an aggressive dog. He should have either been seen be an experienced behaviourist to determine the problem, or humanely euthanased by a vet. Good post secretkei, my thoughts exactly.
  8. OMG sooo cute!!! Lucky you!!! a mini lottie I've just realises, Lottie has very similar marking to Clovers- except in blue merle of course.
  9. I don't know what area you're in, some seem to be better than others, in my area, there are hardly any serious incidents. I would not take your dogs to a dog park if you are anxious, all the dogs will sense it, including your own and it can't be very enjoyable for you being stressed the whole time. I think it is dangerous to take a small "squealer" to the park as it can excite the others dogs into attacking. Perhaps organise some socialisation for your dog with other friendly, well socialised dogs so she becomes less stressed. Not all dogs need to socialse and play with other dogs. I do worry about some of the smaller dogs, just getting bowled over or stepped on could really hurt them. I think separate areas for big and small dogs are a great idea too, i wish we had some in our area.
  10. I hope it all goes well! Did you get to do it yourself? I love surgery, but wouldn't be too keen to operate on my own furries - I know students & vets who do, though. No, I didn't do it, she actually went back out to guide dogs to get it done. I don't think they'd entrust a potentially $30 000 puppy to a vet student either
  11. she is so cute! It is possible the breeder has never had it, though it is unusual they hadn;t at least heard of it.
  12. well, it won't hurt to start on the probiotics now So if you feel you want to, you should. I think a lot depends on what particular antibiotic is used.
  13. What an awful thing to happen to you! I hope your dogs pull through.
  14. Any recommendations? There is no point in starting it until you've finished the antibiotics. The abs do not discrimate between "bad" bacteria and "good " bacteria generally speaking. I have some PAW probiotics (you are welcome to have- they didn't do anything for my dog) but persoanlly i think those human-grade ones that are kept refrigerated are probably better, there are a couple of brands but i have used inner-health plus before with success. I hope Rover is feeling better today!
  15. Yes, you've read "marley and me" haven't you? :p Is she crate trained? A true working dog must have an off switch as well. No gundog would work 8 hrs a day, 7 days a week all year round. Most gundog work is seasonal or a weekend thing, the dogs have to be reasonably companionable for the rest of the time. Have you considered competing in a dog sport with her?
  16. Unless you can work from home I wouldn't bother taking more than one day off. It is pretty boring because you can't walk them or anything, you just have to sit around and watch them. She'll be better off just having quiet time on her own i think. You could have it done on a thursday, pick her up friday and then have the weekend though if you wer ereally concerned.
  17. Mindy is back! She is fine She is probably a little sore, as she seems a bit quieter than usual, thoughthe first thing she did was run up the stairs (which she is not allowed to do) She was well-behaved in the kennels and in the van, unlike her brother i'm told she is a very accepting dog though and seemed to take well to the kennel environment which is a good sign. It is nice to know she doesn't stress. Will be keeping her crated today and tomorrow and we'll see how things go from there. Will not be taking her out today at all, i think she can just stay at home and rest. She has an ecollar, but I will only put that on when i can't directly supervise her. Am very impressed with her wound though, it is only about 3cm long, quite good for a largish dog i reckon! I may take her for a short leash walk on sunday if she is getting a bit restless.
  18. Not really, we were just approaching a big open area, i didn't really intend on letting my dog run over, she wasn't really interested anyway, she was off sniffing in the opposite direction. The area is a walk-thru to another part of the park though, that we were going to go to. I was at least 500 m away, he literally saw me walking vaguely towards them and started yelling.
  19. Thank you! We love him a lot and while he is very food-motivated, he seems to enjoy training/doing tricks for the sake of it, so that makes it a lot of fun. He seems to love obedience class. I love the concept of doing DWD but neither my husband nor I would fancy dancing around in the ring with him wearing a silly outfit. At this stage we're hoping that one day he'll be suitable for agility ... he'd be great at agility, he is such a clever little fella
  20. That makes sense because it is sometimes the hormones that the ovaries produce predispose the uterus to getting infected (if i remember correctly?).
  21. I haven't heard how things went with Mindy today, but i am guessing no news is good news? I'm sure they would have contacted me if something had gone wrong. She is coming home tomorrow at lunch
  22. Did they actually give you the results for these tests? PCV is packed cell volume, checking for thing like anaemia, it can also be used as a guide for dehydration. cerenia is an anti-nausea injection, betamox is an antibiotic injection (the same as the tabs you have, but injectable). The health profile is a range of general health parameters that check such things as kidney function, liver function, glucose levels, pancreatic enzymes etc. I'm guessing that lipase was slightly elevated- that was the small positive for pancreatitis??? If they were really worried about pancreatitis, I would have thought they would have done a CPLI, which is more specific and diagnositic for canine pancreatitis. It actually sounds alot like what Mindy had (some kind of gastro/food poisoning thing), interstingly, I was told she stopped having tremors at the vet, but at home she started having them again. They vet said not to worry and to let her sleep it off, which i did, but also kept a very close eye on her. She was fine by the next morning though. I hope Rover feels better soon!
  23. The painkillers will only last for around 24hrs after given. We usually keep our spays in overnight, in a cage, with an ecollar, so they can't really get up to too much trouble If your vet is happy for you to take her home on the same day, make sure you crate her for the rest of the day and overnight. She may be feeling pretty sleepy and lousy anyway from the anaesthetic. After a few days (if you're lucky :D) of feeling a bit miserable, it is them up to you to limit her activities. Most dogs feel fine after 2-3 days (and quite a few feel absoltuely fine and bouncy as soon as they wake up!) but should still not be allowed to run around.
  24. Poor Rover! I hope he is feeling better after being at the vets for a bit. Please give him cuddles from me
  25. I've seen lab and kelpie type puppies being advertised as either low or moderate exercise requirements
