We pick up our rescue dog on Friday, a 2 year old white Husky called Mya. Some of you will know her from K9angel's thread. We are very excited but obviously want the introductions to our existing dog to go well. Jenna, is a 9 month old Golden retriever x Samoyed (before I knew any better ) Now we are going to introduce them to each other on neutral ground and try and walk them together for a bit, before we come home and I will be feeding them seperately. Jenna is a happy, friendly dog so we are really hoping there will not be any issues but if anyone has any other tips to help them get along, or any other no nos I should definitely not be doing, I would love to hear them. 2 more sleeps ;)

We had our lab done at 6 months, no problems. Jenna was done earlier at about 18 weeks, same time as she had another op. No problems so far with her either. You Aussie Girl is absolutely gorgeous

Generally What Are The Quarantine Times For Usa And Uk To Oz?
teekay replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
We bought our Labrador over from the UK about 4 years ago. I'm pretty sure you have to bring them freight, It doesn't make any difference if you are on the plane or not. From memory i think it cost us between 3 and 4 thousand uk pounds (not sure what the exchange rate is atm) and then you have to pay the quarantine costs (30 days) -
At that price I, not surprised. They look so cute

A few of you have been following the Mya, the White husky from Blacktown pound in the rescue section. Well I am very pleased to announce that K9angel has agreed to let Mya come to live with us. :) We are all very excited and so happy that Rach trusts us enough to look after this special girl. For those of you who don't know, Mya was exceptionally thin when Rach rescued her from the pound. She was on the next pts list, which gives me shudders when I think how close this beautiful girl came to the bridge. Rachel has nurtured her back to health and she looks fantastic now. ;) We will do all we can to give her a wonderful life here with Jenna and the rest of us. Thanks to the people in the Sibe thread for answering my questions, I'm sure I will be on there more when Mya arrives. once again K9angel. It is a wonderful thing you do for these poor dogs.

Oh No She's Eaten A Load Of Grapes!
teekay replied to teekay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well we have just collected Jenna from the vets. It seems she hasn't had any adverse reaction to the grapes, she is eating and pooing normally so we are very relieved. However, I have just noticed she has a small lump on her snout. It's about the size of a pea. It's hard to touch and doesn't seem to bother her. Pretty sure it wasn't there when she went in yesterday. Groan, just something else to worry about. I will pop her back to the vets on Monday if the lump is still there. -
Oh No She's Eaten A Load Of Grapes!
teekay replied to teekay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks for the replies. It's nice to know there are dogs out there who have suffered no ill effect from eating grapes. It would appear that it's a bit of a lottery as to whether they will affect a dog and no way to predict which ones will suffer. Therefore we have decided, on the vets advice, to admit Jenna to the animal hospital for preventative treatment. They are giving her intravenous fluids for 48 hours to hopefully flush out any potential toxins in her kidneys. It may be overkill as she was perfectly healthy when I took her in but I would rather be safe than sorry. -
I have just found out Jenna managed to get into a bag of grapes and has eaten about half. I estimating about 300gms worth, going on what is left. She weighs 18.8kgs.She must have eaten them sometime between 9am and 11am this morning. I have rung round 3 vets and 2 have told me just to watch her. I am waiting for a call back from the third. Does anyone have any experience of their dogs eating grapes. there are some really scary stories on the internet about it. Right now Jenna seems fine and is showing no symptoms but I will be on tenterhooks for the next 24 hours. Keep everything crossed for my greedy guts :D

If you start early enough I think it is possible to train your dog to leave them. From when we first got Jenna I used to go out with her at night and just a loud "ah ah" when she went near them and she seems to have learnt to leave them alone. I do also look for toads when I let her out and get rid of any I can see.

Awwwww. There goes the housework Too cute, I could watch all day. Just wait til my daughter gets back from school, you'll be able to hear her squeals of delight from there.

Pet Insurance - Medibank Or Petplan?
teekay replied to Ruby Tuesday's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This was my reason for choosing Petplan. Have claimed a total of approx $3000 dollars on my Lab who sadly died early last year. Did take a while to process claims but other than that, no problems. -

What Strange Tastes Do Your Dogs Have?
teekay replied to mutt lover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Absolutely anything my teenage son is eating because he's a big softy and will inevitably share it with Jenna But she does LOVE pears -
Yes Jenna never wears a collar at home either.
-
yes but you still have to adjust it once on. I'm a little confused, sorry. Once you have set the size I'm presuming you can slip it over her head. You don't need to adjust it each time do you? I like the look of the Rogz beach bum limited check collar too. They appear to work on the same principle.
-
I like the look of the martingale collars, looks like that might be my answer. I presume they just slip over their head like a check chain but it is limited as to how tight it gets when she pulls? Jenna's not a great puller, she walks quite well but does have a tendency to get exited when we pass another dog.
-
Yes. She just has a fabric collar at the moment with a plastic buckle that you snap together iykwim. Every time I try to snap it together her fur is in the way. I try and put my fingers between the buckle and her fur and then snap my bloody fingers in it. I don't think a normal buckle would be any easier though. Well maybe easier on my fingers I will google some of the suggestions and have a look. Cheers

Yep, I'm afraid I have to agree with you

Hi, I have a dog with a very 'bushy' neck and am finding it increasingly difficult to get a collar on her without getting her fur caught in it. I was looking at the check chains the other day and thought, how easy it would be to just be able to slip it over her head but I am really not keen on using one, and I guess the fur would get caught in it once it was on anyway What do other owners of fluffy dogs do, is there a knack to it? It probably doesn't help that, as soon as I go to put her collar on, she lifts her paw up in the way every time and it becomes a bit of a struggle. aarrgghh.

Wow what gorgeous dogs, and fantastic photos. I especially like the one of the two sharing the stick, lovely and nice to see some action shots. I must admit I was one of those under the impression that Newfs were a bit 'lazy'. Not anymore. I guess they are as active as their owners eh?
-
Yeh, that makes sense, cheers

I have just been browsing the breeder listings on here. We will be thinking of getting another dog soon and I do have a soft spot for Labradors, although Aussie Shepherds are also on my list. I noticed something that confused me, though. One breeder has listed a future litter of pups, saying they will be all black. The picture of the Sire and Dam show one is yellow and one looks like brown but may be black, not entirely sure. If one of the parents are yellow does this not mean some of the litter may be yellow? I know my last yellow lab came a black Mum and a yellow Dad. Just curious as to how it works.

Ooh I remember reading about Fraser, so sad We lost our beloved Labrador Holly in April last year and got our new pup in August, bit sooner than expected but I fell in love with her. Is Henry another Labrador?
