Incidence Of Heartworm In Nsw, Qld & Sa
teekay replied to Inevitablue's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Do you know the details of what preventative she was using Rebanne? Was it a monthly and she only missed one dose because that goes against the inofrmation on the leaflet in my Interceptor Spectrum packet which says: Very interesting information some Dolers have posted in my recent thread on this. Linky if anyone is interested http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/237758-heartworm-protection-dosage-intervals/ -
Only just read through this thread, Rach. Fingers crossed for little Cookie, she is a darling little thing.

Pretty sure PetPlan is your only option if you want this. That's who I use, for that very reason. :)

Thanks for the replies. :) With regard to the yapping in the crate. I think I have accidentally found a solution, for now anyway. If I put the other 2 dogs outside and Luka in his crate, with his kong, he is fine. Done this the last 4 days and he has been great. I even set the video camera up to see what happened while I was out and he just settled down to sleep after finishing his kong. I have been ingnoring him with his barking too and I think he seems to be doing it less, other than when he is outside playing with the other 2. He doesn't usually bark when it is just him and Jenna playing but if Mya joins in then Mya and Jenna start playing and he's barking as if to say "Me, don't forget about me. Play with meeeeeeee". :D

Heartworm Protection Dosage Intervals?
teekay replied to teekay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank Dju for that link. Very interesting reading. When I took Luka for his 12 week vaccination recently I was concerned that he hadn't had any previous heartworm tablets but the vet told me it was fine as heartworm medication kills off any little worms up to 3 months so that supports what that article was saying. I am going to talk about it more when he goes back in a couple of weeks for his 3rd jabs. -
I know there has just been a topic about Advocate dosing every month but I was wondering more specifically about heartworm protection so wanted to start a new thread. I have used Interceptor Spectrum on my dogs every month for years now but having had a close look at the leaflet in the box I am now wondering whether it is necessary to be doing this every 30 days. Here is exactly what the leaflet says: What happens if I miss a dose or I am late in Dosing? Going by this I would say, at the very least, they only need it every 45 days and if you can effectively maintain protection after 60 days (as it says) maybe that is ok too? Are there any experts out there who could shed some light on this? Not only would the cost benefits amount to a considerable sum, the chemicals we are subjecting our dogs to could be vastly reduced over their lifetime.

Hi all Luka, my aussie shepherd puppy in case you haven't seen my other thread :) , is 13 weeks old today. On the whole he is a wonderful puppy and is very quick to learn. We have encountered a couple of problems, though, and I was wondering whether I am doing the right thing. Would welcome any suggestions. 1. He does have a tendency to bark. Mostly it is to try and get Jenna or Mya, my other 2 dogs, to play, but sometimes it is just to try and get some attention. Obviously I do not give him any attention when he is barking but any hints on how to get him to stop would be great. If I do "shhhh" he will stop and I have been giving him a treat but then he will just start again, so not sure if this is the best tactic. 2. Leaving him when I go out. I have not left him for extended periods yet, but I have left him when I do the school drop off/pick up. Only out for about 30 mins at the most. I put him in his crate with a kong with some peanut butter in it and he is fine going in there but invariably when I get back I can hear him yap yap yapping. I have been waiting till he is quiet, even if only for a couple of seconds before I put my key in the door to try reinforce that barking will not bring me back but, again, any other suggestions would be very very welcome. I always go out without any fuss and when I get back I open the crate, open the door for him to go outside and don't really talk to him at all. Trying the make the whole coming and going thing as boring as I can. he is totally fine with me disappearing into another room so he is not that attached to me and he is happy in his crate at night so I don't think he hates the crate. Here is my little man, I'm sure piccies are a necessity in this forum :D

Hi PS. I did get in contact with Wajoma Kennels about any future litters they were planning, but no, Luka came from Tillsun Aussie Shepherds. In fact that reminds me. I should let Helen know I have my Aussie now :)
-
I definitely haven't ruled it out tdierikx but not for a while. Once Luka is fully grown and all pack dynamics have stabilised I would certainly consider it. :)

Oh now I'm flattered and feeling guilty at the same time

Thought you might like that one Rach :D Mya is a husky, one of k9angel's awesome saves Jenna is a Golden Retriever x Samoyed ( before I knew better - always feel the need to add that ) :)

Just wanted to share some pictures of my new Aussie Shepherd pup Luka I've wanted an Aussie Shepherd for a few years now and recently decided I didn't want to wait anymore. 3 dogs are that much more difficult than 2 to look after right? After contacting a few different breeders I went to pick up my little man last Wednesday. He is an absolute joy. So funny to see him playing with Jenna. I think she is enjoying having a little playmate. She was a bit jumpy at first but is now getting used to him. Mya wasn't to impressed at first but she is also coming round to him and has even had a little play with him herself. :) (Mya is not a very playey (not a word I know ) kind of dog so this was lovely to see) Anyway, here he is :D Mya and Luka sleeping With Jenna

Sorry got caught up and forgot to check this thread. I'm right at the Southern end of the Sunny coast. Most of the suggestion are quite a drive from here. I may just suck it up and go back the my usual Vet. Other than the stuff up with the heartworm injection they have been good and I like the fact you see one of 2 vets each time you go. Seeing someone who actually knows you and your dog is important I think. They did apologise and offered to refund so I think I will give them another chance.

I have recently had a bit of a falling out with my vet. My OH took Jenna for her annual vaccinations and when he came back, she had been given the yearly heartworm injection. I was not happy - with either him or the vets. I called the vets and they said the computers were down and my OH had said yes when they asked about the injection. I will admit they were very apologetic and offered to refund the money for the jab but I'm still not happy. The computers may have been down but it was quite clear by the vaccination card Jenna has never had the injection. Anyway it got me thinking. I read on here about people saying they have fantastic vets and others who seem to be pretty average. Is there anyone on the Sunny Coast who absolutely swears by their vets and, equally, any who have had a negative experience (probably best to pm any negative stuff). :) Needless to say I will be taking the dogs for any future vet trips and OH has had a lecture about how he really should know more about the dogs and not assume I will do/ will know everything. TIA

That didn't take long PS. Wow Poor oscar, that really is alot of wrinkles. I love the comment on FB that someone has let the air out of him  In all seriousness though, I presume this is not a desireable amount of wrinkles. His skin must feel so heavy. Good luck with him PS, he certainly is in good hands

It's all happened so quick. I was reading about Pei's being rehomed and feeling a little sad for poor CB and then a phone call on Saturday, and Sunday morning he's gone. It's a little bit but more Way to go Charlie. Hope you get the wonderful life you deserve. I will miss our cuddles, he was just so smoochy, much more so than my girls. -

So Charlie Brown has a meet and greet arranged for tomorrow morning. Have given him a bath today, he's smelling luuuurvely. Hope it goes well for him. Will let you all know how it goes. He and Mya have really started getting on well lately too. They have been having some great zoomies and bitey bitey sessions but with hardly any noise from Mya. Until she's had enough that is. Then she lets him know in no uncertain terms, Game Over. Here's a few photos I took today of one of their chases. I'm gunna getcha Nearly Gotcha All made up, still friends :) -
So sorry to read this Rach. Tess had a wonderful life thanks to you. Run Free Tess.

Oh Jen said she had had a few enquiries for him but I didn't realise he was featured in the paper. Which paper was that? Haven't heard anything else so far though, so I am guessing no one was suitable. Not sure, Jen will probably be able to fill us in. -

I had an even better one with his lips really flapping in the wind  But it was not quite in focus. Hence the impromptu photography lessons from hubby. :) There will be more. I think photography may be addictive  -

A little update on Charlie Brown. (And an excuse to post more photos  ) Still doing great. We have discovered his favourite pastime is ridding our garden of those pesky birds. Boy can he move when he wants to. Not as quick as the birds though, thankfully. Got some great shots of him trotting back to me though. I took him to the beach earlier this week. He really didn't know what to make of the waves so we just trotted along the beach. He did have a bit of a paddle in the still waters of a lake type thing that is only connected to the ocean at high tide, but wasn't overly keen. Was content to just run on the sand and stop and sniff everything :) Charlie had a great time at the Peinic this last weekend. All those butts to sniff............heaven  So many Pei for me to meet too. It was great, and they were all so well behaved. I didn't see any nastiness, a few growls but nothing to worry about. 32ish Peis all together chasing, sniffing, rolling, splashing (we'd had lots of rain but thankfully not on the day) just generally doing what dogs do best. I'm sure they all slept wonderfully that night. Charlie was great in the car. We had quite a long journey because I had to take my daughter back down to Jimboomba after the peinic before heading back to the Sunny Coast and there wasn't a peep out of him he just settled down and slept for most of it. My daughter's homestay family absolutely loved him. They said he was so placid and well behaved and would make a great family pet. I couldn't agree more. Mind you they do have two crazy crazy untrained labradors Anyway here's some more photos. I tried to get some action shots. Hubby is giving me camera lessons so there will be more soon. :) -
They are all so cute, but Charlie
