Does She Really Need An Elizabethan Collar?
teekay replied to WExtremeG's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have had two bitches spayed, neither of which needed a collar. It depends on the dog though. I would suggest try without and if she needs one then go get one. My vet in the UK gave me a collar and let me return it if i didn't use it, so that's what I did. :) -
Oh no, Poor Charlie, you were a brave little man. He fought a brave fight and so did you wSibs. Charlie will be missed by many. RIP Charlie Run Free

Great to see so many breeds but to my (very untrained) eye I agree some dogs look very strange. The Greyhound and the Golden retriever in particular. The samoyed doesn't look fluffy enough either, surely it should have more hair? As for the ears on the Dobe and Boxer The Old English Sheepdog looks like a stuffed toy

Great news It's such a relief when you get them home :)

My Mum suffered with hyponatremia a few years ago. Yes, it can be fatal and has to be monitored very very carefully. It was a scary time, it affected her mind and she would behave like she had severe dementia. It was horrible to see her like that but after restricting her fluid intake, her sodium level gradually increased and after week or two she was back to normal. It wasn't as a result of drinking lots of water though. The docs were not sure why she got it but she had been vomiting a lot just before it started so maybe that threw her sodium level out of wak. Good job they diagnosed it when they did though. I'd never heard of it before then.

Juice. I don't have any experience of lumps and stuff but I did have a dog who was ill and I know how hard it is while you are waiting for a diagnosis. Really really hoping it is a good outcome for Bonn.

I got some recently from here: http://www.dogtreatsaustralia.com/ I used Sway (whelping supplies) last time. I do like to support a fellow doler but they were out of stock this time. Great service from the above company. 3 good sized antlers within a couple of days ETA didn't realise that was the same link as earlier, sorry. I must have got in just in time. They do have some mediums though, for those interested.

I'd second that. You may find it's not as expensive as you think because you are already paying for a GA. I had Jenna spayed while she underwent another proceedure and it didn't cost that much more. Can't remember how much though, sorry.

Ok confused again :D If black hides brindle, how can it be dominant. Or do you mean dominant over fawn. Even so if black is dominant over brindle how can the gene be eliminated without genetic testing? Think of it like coats of paint. :) A dog can have a base colour of either black or red. Then it will have a top colour of brindle, sable, or black mask or clear. So you can have a dog with a base coat of black, with a top coat of black brindle stripes. The dog will just look black, you wont see the stripes at all. But they are there and can be passed on, and if that black is mated to a red, any red puppies will all inherit the brindle black stripes over their base coat of red. Which is the visible expression of brindle. Genetic testing is a faster way to find out genetics than the old method of doing at least two generations of test matings to red dogs. There is info about the brindle gene here . http://www.doggenetics.co.uk/index.htm The site is outstanding because of the way it takes this complicated subject and translates it into easy language. Makes it so much easier to understand how the genes interact with each other, and lots of photos. Thanks GM. I sould've just gone to that site eh? Right, now I have got my head around the white spotting gene, I will move on to brindle :D

Just read the dachshund link and I find it interesting that they seem to lump piebald and merle into the same basket without any real evidence. They have surmised that because double merles have problems so will piebald to piebald. As far as i know merle to merle matings are know to cause a high incidence of problems but i still can't find any evidence that piebald to piebald does. Especially as in some breeds it is a very common practice and the breed has not suffered. Surely the piebald gene either causes problems or it doesn't. Or is it possible for it to cause problems in some breeds and not others? Eta Added quote for clarification.

Are white schnauzers white because of lack of pigment, or because of a pale ee expression? They have pigment and like a lot of white dogs, can have some biscuit colour to the top coat. She's pretty. Good to know that they are fully pigmented. Anne, I remember the big thread we had here about pugs. I'm not convinced that brindle is supposed to be in the breed. Even if it is in the breed, by making them a registrable colour, there will be a lot more of them in the breed. Because black hides brindle it will take test matings to know if a black is a carrier, and because of the way the gene works, many litters will be all brindle or all fawn. Brindle is a dominant gene, so all fawn dogs are already known not to carry brindle. The gene could be eliminated from the breed if people were prepared to do that, unlike a recessive gene which would be nearly impossible to eliminate without genetic testing. Ok confused again :D If black hides brindle, how can it be dominant. Or do you mean dominant over fawn. Even so if black is dominant over brindle how can the gene be eliminated without genetic testing? Never heard of a 'panda' gsd. Was surprised when I saw the pics because the colouring is nothing like a panda, lol. Should have just called them pied or piebald GSDs. Very interesting links WextemeG, thanks for those. There sure were some vehemently against breeding them on that GSDs forum. And some who refused to believe that it wasn't a result of a cross with a husky somewhere down the line, regardless of genetic evidence proving they were pure. Sorry if this has already been answered but, can the colour be registered here? Personally I do not like the look of them but it is interesting.

I have a question too. It makes sense to me to not exercise them for a period of time after they have eaten, while the food is new to their gut and moving through etc, but I do not understand the theory behind why you shouldn't exercise them for 2 hours before eating. We usually got for a walk and then they have breakfast or dinner. Not straight away, but I don't wait 2 hours. I usually wait til they are no longer panting and have completely settled down, probably about 30 mins on a normal day.

I didn't actually get the impression she was in it for the money and I still maintain the thread did not 'promote' parti poodles. The discussion was sensible and informative. Oh And to keep things clear. Can someone please point me to the rule that says we cannot discuss purebreeds that are not registered. I still can't find it. Maybe the "as recognised by the ANKC" in underlined writing in the forum rules is the giveaway? And it wasn't the discussion of the dog, it was the breeding of unregistered dogs that was the problem. DOL doesn't promote the breeding of unregistered dogs. There is also a "We reserve the right to change these terms and conditions at any time without notice to you." clause in the forum rules ;) That's fine, I just think it should clearly say somewhere in the rules no discussion of breeding of non registered breeds or non standard colours. Simple really. It does say this : This site was created for pure bred dog discussion (ANKC recognised breeds) The primary purpose of this forum is to promote and discuss pure bred dogs (as recognised by the ANKC) so we ask you respect our aim when visiting here. If you own a cross breed dog, you are also welcome here, but we ask that you refer to it by its proper name (eg a pug-x or cavalier-x instead of the designer term 'pugalier'). But that isn't particularly clear, especially in this circumstance as the poodle is a recognised breed, just the colour that isn't - ambiguous. Just suggesting another rule be added to make everything clearer for newbies.

Hmmmm that has got me thinking. So did she just not see it or did she think the pigment would come in later. I presume it is the breeders decision whether a pup goes on main or limited register. Does anyone check that the pups adhere to the standard when they are put on the mains register?
-
Yeah, you're probably right JulesP, but the I've just read the rules and IMO they could be clearer on the subject. Maybe there should be a rule stating No discussion of breeding non ANKC registered (or foreign equivalent) dogs because I can't see it actually says that, although regulars know anyway but for the newbies. Unless I'm mistaken and I just can't see it, perfectly possible

I was really enjoying the discussion on Parti poodles and the genetics behind colours and breeding. I honestly do not think it broke any rules. These poodles were not crossbreeds. We were discussing an ANKC recognised breed, albeit a mismark. Last I looked it was a civil discussion. Did it get nasty towards the end and I missed it? I understand it is a bit of a grey area because these poodles cannot actually be registered but the thread wasn't promoting them, it was discussing them. Maybe the title of the forum needs to be changed Australia's Pedigree Dog Forum because the dogs being discussed were 'pure breeds' just not registered. Maybe the wording of the rules should say 'Registered with the ANKC' rather than 'recognised by the ANKC' . It's a bit ambiguous. Not meaning to cause trouble just disappointed an interesting thread got deleted. And I know it's your Forum Troy and you can delete whatever you like I am not disputing that fact, just trying to be clear on the rules.

Ok that was more complicated than I thought :D They only do pills for dogs up to 10kgs $30.88 for 5 and pills for dogs up to 3kgs $12 51 for 4 Going by my heaviest dog (22kgs) she would need 2 of the larger pills and one of the smaller (or just 3 of the larger but that works out a bit more expensive) Works out to $15.47 every 3 months so $61.88 for the year (interestingly practically the same as the chews, I would have thought the chews were more expensive but there you go. So including the HW, yearly cost is $94.68 So for me and my dogs it works out cheaper (and a lot less hassle) to just give them the one chew every 45 days Not sure if anyone else was intersted in all this but I was :D

So because it's raining and I have too much time on my hands, :giggle I thought I would see how dosing separately, compared to the current regime I use. Hopped on Budget Pet Products ( who I always use) for all the prices. I do have largish dogs though so obviously all prices are increased. Drontal $31.00 for 2 Heartworm only pills $16.40 for 6 Yearly cost for one dogs using Drontal every 3 months and HW pills monthly $94.80 (decreases to $83.60 if only using the HW every 45 days, not sure about the HW only pills and if it is safe to do this. It is a different active ingredient to Interceptor so I do not know. Another reason why I prefer Interceptor though, having a Collie breed Ivermectin is a bit of a no no) Interceptor spectrum $41.35 Yearly cost for one dog using Interceptor spectrum, dosing every 45 days (works out to 8 times a year) $55.15 Bloody hell, I never realised Drontal is so expensive There are probably cheaper alternatives but Drontal is the only one I know. It's the one the vet always recommends. I also don't like the weight range on the drontal pills the medium size only covers dogs up to 10kg and the next size up covers dogs up to 35kg. My dogs range from 16 - 22kgs so seems over kill to get the bigger ones. These prices are for the chewbale tablets. I suppose I should check the hard pills. I'll be back

I space it out to 6 weeks under the instructions of my vet. The manufacturer is there to sell the product so naturally they will say it's needed 4 weekly rather than 6 weekly. As for the worming and flea treatment I myself prefer to do it all in one hit. Of course, everyone does what suits and that's OK too. I'd agree with this. Have a look at the leaflet in the packet. What does it say about a missed dose. I use Interceptor spectrum and here is copy of what the instruction leaflet says Once a month, ideally on the same date. If a dose is overdue by >15 days, treat immediately and resume monthly dosing. If a dose is missed by 15-30 days, heartworm prevention can be maintained if treated immediately and monthly dosing resumes for at least the next 2 months. If a dose is missed by >60 days, a veterinarian must be consulted in case the animal has contracted heartworm. Dosing may be recommenced, and a blood test for adult heartworm must be performed after 6 months. So what they are really saying is it is effective with a 60 day interval. I don't actually go that far but (and in consultation with my vet) I dose every 45 days. I like to limit the amount of chemicals my dogs are exposed to unnecessarily.
