  1. Sounds like a purple swamp hen if it was black and blue. Thanks from me also for helping the poor thing. Can't post a pic but if you google it, I'm sure you'll find one.
  2. And that is why we love dogs. I do feel sorry for people who don't, as they will never know that sort of comfort or devotion. Sure hope you are now on the mend and chopping the zeds, Jacqui....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
  3. I guess this means you haven't opened the LDH link on the OP's posts.
  4. You are kinder than me, Clyde. I was going to suggest Hubby crash in the shed. Congrats on your rescue Akita girl, Lena.
  5. Goldenoodle? I heard this type of crossbred dog referred to as a "Golden Retroodle" on a very funny show called 'Party Down' on ABC2 recently. It was meant to be satirical but truth is stranger than fiction as they say...
  6. Well done, Tapua. And of course, Tua and Croftie! A very worthwhile activity that will bring so much pleasure to nursing home residents who are unable to have pets of their own. Cheers!
  7. They are guessing the breed because, as Koala says, they are having a bit of harmless fun. Nothing sinister or dangerous in that. No one who has responded on this thread has speculated about breed characteristics inherent in this dog. And the OP said her relatives would be ensuring the dog received appropriate training. I think people who don't take themselves too seriously can agree that this little pooch is a Cattle X Corgi X Akita X Kelpie X Basenji X Shibu X BorderCollie, although Akita might be stretching it!
  8. Tim Vasudeva is profiled in today's 'Good Weekend' - the magazine liftout in the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age. Sounds like a top bloke!
  9. Me again, Elina. There are many differing opinions expressed on DOL but one thing most DOLers agree on is that puppy farms are inhumane, are run for profit only, and contribute to the large number of dogs in pounds and shelters around Australia. You probably know from reading DOL threads that puppy farms are a type of intensive farming, where miserable, unhealthy breeding bitches are kept in terrible conditions producing pups every time they come in season. Do you have puppy farms in Finland?
  10. Thanks very much Elina - it's great to have this perspective. Can you tell us about desexing in Finland? Is it compulsory for dogs that are pets only, that is, that are not show dogs or working sheep or cattle dogs?
  11. Warning, my post is Hi Elina Do hope you're still tuned in, or will be soon! I'm very interested in your comment above, from page 3 of this thread. Can you explain why Finland does not have an abandoned dog problem please? As it is off-topic, it would be best if you could start a new thread. Many thanks! I have found this thread very interesting - I had not heard of the Caucasian Ovcharka before.
  12. Your post is all over the place Shortstep but I assume the last two paras as are your actual contributions and the rest is Raelene's. You are unbelievably rude and your post contributes nothing to the dialogue. Raelene has been a respected rescuer in the Canberra/Queanbeyan region for many many years through ARF - ACT Rescue and Foster, and has fostered countless pound dogs. You owe her an apology.
  13. Be fair. Ms Le Couteur acknowledges that it's an exposure draft and that there are issues that need to be further addressed: "If they’re younger than the legal age, the animals must be sold with a ‘desexing voucher’. Certainly there are some tricky issues with this and we’re looking at how exemptions might work - for example where the dogs/cats are sold to someone outside the ACT, or are for breeding/showing. These are the kinds of things we’re working through, and submissions will be helpful."
  14. I agree too. All those devastated people forced out of their homes and leaving pets behind - among all the devastation it would at least it be some comfort to know their pets were safe.
  15. I have already donated to a flood relief fund but would very much like to donate to an animal charity that is helping out as well, if anyone knows of one. There must be many lost and distressed pets which would be adding to the trauma suffered by those people evacuated from their homes. Not to mention the drowned livestock and native animals....
  16. I have sent a polite but quite strident email to the journo who wrote the article - her email address appears (most conveniently!) at the article's end. And rather than a thumb's down emoticon to represent Ms White's stupidity and the paper's culpability, my sturdy peasant origins incline me to prefer a boot up a date.
  17. Very unfortunate that the RSPCA rep didn't better explain the veterinary costs by emphasising the importance of desexing and vaccinatiion. Or perhaps she did and the paper chose not to use those bits. It's an appalling, unbalanced article and the newspaper will certainly be hearing from me!
  18. Just in case anyone missed it the first time... Seasons greetings to all!
  19. How do you know this, lillysmum?
  20. I concur. And I wish there was a simultaneous crying and clapping emoticon because I would be using it now. Dearest Bonnie - so glad you are safe and comfy now, girl. XXXX
  21. Beautiful, beautiful Tammy - congrats on your anniversary, Madam! And to you too, Cazstaff - Im glad she brings you so much joy.
  22. Life Matters has just started on ABC Radio National - there will be an item on Oscar's Law within the next hour ie before 10am (Eastern Summer Time) In Canberra Radio National is AM 846. In Sydney it's much lower down the dial, something like AM 576. I should know Perth's too but have forgotten! Life Matters is repeated each evening around 9pm so there is plenty of time to establish your area's station setting if you want to catch the repeat. We half a dozen RN listeners Australia-wide frequently find this station most illuminating! :D
  23. Con-grat-u-laaaaaaations! (As Cliff Richard would say.... ) But why are we not surprised?!! Well done k9A, Luki and family! XXXXX
