happy to report the lump is significantly down today. I've been thinking about this the last few days. will see if it continues to go down quickly. -

how long did it take to go away? Did you just get him to sit on soft surfaces all the time? Oberon will sit on soft surfaces but seems to prefer hard floors. He also prefers to lie on the hygroma side. -

He didn't talk about ruling it out at all. He saw the xray as merely confirmation to how bad it was. He was already talking surgery (though not by himself, but another surgeon). I am getting in contact with another vet who owns pharaoh hounds, i'd be more comfortable with someone who knows sighthounds to get a second opinion. I honestly think he had discomfort from how the vet checked because of how he put pressure on the limbs. he didn't yelp, just didn't like it. Also for the level of damage the vet was talking about, Oberon should be lame in some way. He shows no sign of lameness, This afternoon we couldn't stop him from doing zoomies, he went nuts. jumping, leaping. Here is a link to images of hygromas http://www.dogleggs.com/files/hygroma3.cfm there is a pic of a 12 week old weimaraner on the site. and here is a pic of Oberons leg. oh and a pic of my 'lame' dog in full bolt after a tasty leg. and a happy shot, don't want people to think he's sad And i appreciate you playing devils advocate. Its true it could still be ED, but not likely, i will get it checked out. -

sorry to hear of your loss. I'm so very glad that Oberon hadn't had a worse reaction than what he did. -

I started another thread on Friday about the lump and everyone thought it was a hygroma, which is what i think you're thinking of. I really hope thats what it is. In the morning the lump is softer but it hardens through the day. I'm still worried. cant help it. I keep reminding myself whats the chance of an 11 week old borzoi having both elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia like the vet suspects.eta, yep it was just the one elbow with a lump I've finally got time to come in and comment here and can I just say that any vet who gives a C5 to a young sighthound puppy who isn't even due for it's next needle, has already shown themselves to be an idiot. Then to not be able to recognise an elbow hygroma, instead insisting on 'severe' ED/HD is a complete and utter %&£%^*@!!!! We have spoken to a number of fellow breeders, who between them have hundreds of years of experience and no one has EVER heard of ED or HD in our breed, anywhere in the world. This is all very upsetting to my mother (and myself). She will be calling the AVA tomorrow, as the incompetance of that first vet is beyond belief and he has no right to upset you like that just because he cannot diagnose a SIMPLE hygroma. Morgan & Chocolate were both correct in their posts as to the cause of Hygromas. Its been a hard couple of days. I've felt like such a bad mum. I don't vaccinate my own kids and for once in my life i decide that i should trust a 'professional'. Is it too much to ask for, obviously it is. I did bring up hygroma with the vet too just to be dismissed. The vet was recommended too. lesson learned for a lifetime. I'm insisting he sits on soft surfaces but thats hard in a fully tiled home. Thankfully we have a lot of matresses and theres always the couch. oh and you guys will be happy to know he is acting quite normal again. Sad thing is my BILs weimaraner had a reaction to c5 at his 2nd vax and then they continued to give him the 16 week and year one with exactly the same hypersensitivity reaction. only found this out yesterday. -

He is rather perky today, even doing some zoomies without complaint. He still has some tenderness. I did some googling and got some borzoi pics and videos and Oberon is definitely not skinny and his gait is the same as the other puppies i saw on video. I'll be contacting a vet down at dayboro to give Oberon a once over. the vet owns a pharaoh hound so sounds positive that she'll have more experience with sighthounds. -

Vaccine Reaction Or Something Else

At this stage i'm more concerned about the reaction to the C5. He is much better but still tender. We'll be giving him some homeopathic remedies to help his system. The breeder was shocked at the vets diagnosis. From what i've read of borzois and of elbow and hip dysplasia it just does not make sense. Just got another call from my breeder, she talked to another breeder and she also hasn't ever heard of dysplasia in borzoi. Apparently a borzoi pups natural clumsy gait and odd development can be confused with joint issues, but its not. before the vax there was no pain. I feel a lot better and i'm being referred to a vet with sighthound experience. eta. yep getting Thuja, and we wont be xraying. will see what the other vet says also but i really do trust my breeder. she has always had the best interest of the dogs in mind. -

Talked to the breeder and i now have a direction to go in. will be back later to go into more detail. Feel so bad that he had a reaction. Just thought i was doing the right thing. bashing myself up now. -

What if the breeder has no experience with ED? Giving that advice is not always going to end happily for puppy owners as some breeders are just not happy to hear about genetic problems in the pups they've produced. I think we've seen evidence of that on here on several occassions. I certainly do think that the breeder needs to be notified but if the dog has a joint problem then a specialist vet who needs to be called. Perhaps the breeder can suggest one but otherwise I'm not sure what else they can do. The breeder gave a guarantee for genetic issues like this. she was so sure it wouldn't happen. am going to call her now. -

Thank you for all your replies. He seems a lot better this morning. his lump on his elbow also seems to be a lot better. reduced in size and softer to touch. He has had some steep growth in the last couple of weeks. he'll get more solid for a couple of days and then shoot up. the vet thought this was too quick a growing pattern. He mentioned over nutrition but he is on eagle pack holistic large puppy. and he doesn't eat a lot of it maybe 2/3 the recommendation on the feeding chart. I mean how ribby is too ribby in a bozoi pup? He also mentioned over exercising as the cause, but i cant see that we're doing that. We've only just started doing leash walking and only for a couple of hundred metres. We have a couple of acres so he does run, sometimes with us sprinting for 5 minutes or so but only every couple of days. Is that too much. he is mostly inside, thats where he wants to be. thats the thing, he would let me play with lump and he wasn't fussed. he's been a little slower with exercise but not lame from what i could see. The lump was harder yesterday, but the days before that it seemed to be softer, fluid filled in my opinion. Its not that the vet even thinks its mild ED, he thinks its more developed than that. I'll be calling the breeder today, and try to get a recommendation for someone with more sighthound knowledge. -

maybe a little warm, drinking and eating fine, no vomitting etc, good gum colour. we'll be waiting it out i think, he seems a bit better. i was shocked that he thought it was dysplasia given he's a borzoi. He was quite convinced. not sure if he's experienced with sighthounds. the vet nurse didn't know how to spell borzoi and the vet thought Oberon was too skinny yet a russian woman in town thought he was a fat borzoi puppy. I think i'll talk to the breeder tomorrow. Just way too emotional right now. thank you. -

see right now he is sleeping normally. just cant find any info on vaccine reactions. doesn't seem to fit with snake. -
Oberon went to the vet this arvo for his c5 vax and also to get his lump on his elbow looked at. The vet was very concerned about the lump and after hyperextending both elbows believes he has elbow displaysia. He thinks there may be hip issues too. So we're going to get his elbow xrayed asap. I'm shocked at that but whats worse is how he is tonight. We got his C5 done at about 4.30pm. brought him home. we're under instructions not to let him run too much because of the elbows. So at about 7pm I notice he is sensitive to the touch. I can normally pick him up no problem, but he yelped. It has since escalated to where he'll just be laying and he'll wimper and yelp. If i touch him he wimpers. Its his normal bedtime so its hard to tell whether he is just tired or whether he is more tired than usual. His paw pads and skin are also redder than usual. So is it the vaccination? If it helps it was Canigen KC and DHA2P. I was wondering whether it may be a snake bite since he was under the house this afternoon. but i haven't seen snakes. Please any advice. Would you just see how he fairs overnight?

thanks for the advice. we'll keep an eye on it.

so i just did some reading on hygroma. Can i take it that it may be reabsorbed at this stage or that it will likely get worse if not drained. would you take to the vet to be drained or leave it to resolve on its own as i've read thats suggested. he has been sleeping through the day on floorboards.

Oberon has a fluidy lump on his elbow. Doesn't seem to be bothering him too much so i'm wondering if i should just wait over night to see if it is just some inflammation. Can you tell i'm a first timer? I cant see any wound just a lump the size of a 50c coin(so its fairly large on his elbow. I'm thinking he just bumped it but what else could it be?

we're finding a Petbuckle travel harness to be really good for our big pup. There was no way his adult sized crate would fit in the car. With the harness he pretty much just lies down and sleeps.

I like that last shot of Nina, Anniek. now for some doggy shots. Oberon 9 weeks.

Ruth, your pictures have such warmth to them. beautiful.

I think i'll join in. These were taken a long while ago. This is a true reflection of her character. This has got to be one of my fave portraits of my husband and our first born.
