Dogs now welcome to join cafe society

    LOUISE HALL

    April 26, 2010

DOG owners say that new laws to allow allow canine companions in cafes and restaurants are a ''victory for commonsense''.

The NSW Government has introduced amendments to laws governing food safety and companion animals so that dog owners and cafe proprietors do not risk fines or being named and shamed by the Food Authority.

The prohibition on dogs in food service areas only came to light last year when Mosman Council received complaints from a few residents regarding dogs in Balmoral cafes. Until then, councils had largely turned a blind eye.

Barbara Perry, the Minister for Local Government, said the laws reflected the growth of alfresco cafe culture and the desire of pet owners to include their pooch when socialising.

''Cafe owners must have a choice as to whether dogs should be allowed in or not in order to remove any potential for uncertainty and even conflict - and that's what our proposal seeks to do,'' she said.

Business owners will have the discretion to allow dogs in outdoor dining areas, but pets will still be banned from indoors and food preparation areas.

Peter Higgins, a spokesman for Dogs NSW, welcomed the changes and said he hoped it was the start of a liberalisation of laws surrounding the state's 1.4 million canine companions.

''The concerns about hygiene are a furphy. The number of diseases that can be transferred from a dog to a human is small - you'd be more likely to get sick from someone coughing or sneezing,'' Mr Higgins said.

''In cafes there are kids, prams, people coughing, but you put up with it, and the same can be said for people who don't like dogs.''

But any pooches panting for a puppychino will be disappointed - the laws state dogs cannot be provided with food, must be kept on a leash and can't sit on tables and chairs.

Mark Lawrie, the president of the Australian Veterinary Association, said Australia tended to be overly restrictive of dogs compared to other societies. ''Allowing dogs in cafes fits with where we are at - times have changed, we're much better at controlling our animals and the smiles far outweigh the frowns when dogs are around,'' he said.

Mr Lawrie said the association wanted changes to permit dogs on trains and planes, as in the US and Britain.

Woohooo ! ....now if we could only get QLD to move out of the dark ages.....

heres hoping. I know someone who is exploring the legal avenues to have this done.

  4. The most scary thing was this comment really:

"The staff genuinely believed that Nudge was an ordinary pet dog which had been desexed to become a gay dog,"

So watch out any woman or man who has their ovaries or testicles removed(no matter the reason), I guess you'll then have to be gay.

  5. So I am pretty sure we are about to get notice to move out so i need to get my pet reference in gear. My real estate agent is going to write a pet reference, not that i know what that means really. So I'm doing a word doc and so far it has a section for the borzoi temperament and comments made by neighbours(ie. no barking). Also put in some pics of him. Just wondering what i'm missing. I was going to put in a general description like rarely barks, doesn't dig, gentle etc. any help appreciated.

  6. we might go give it a try.

How old is Oberon now PM.. I'd be very careful about doing this with a pup.

x2. They do have puppy runs though. Basically 50 to 70m at the end of the run (straight) to give them the feel of chasing the lure. There are also age requirements before they can do full runs. I just can't remember what they are.

He's now 7 months. I think he'd find 50m to be too short to be honest. We might go to the next one.

  7. Beth86's update of Lottie has got me thinking of doing my own update for Oberon.

He is now 7 months old and such a wonderful big boy. A real social butterfly with humans and dogs. He's 73cm at the shoulder (and still growing) and about 30kg. I think he's amazing.

Heres a pup pic at 6 weeks,

  8. Yesterday Oberon got out of his run which is not a big deal as the outer yard is fenced but i have no idea what may have irritated his eye. We got home and it was a little red in the white area and a bit gunky. Its worse this morning. Its weeping a fair bit. So I'll be making an appointment at the vets but in the meantime is there anything i can do to sooth it? Do dogs get conjunctivitis like humans because its kind of like that. definitely in both eyes.

  9. colour me confused - there is at least one doggy cafe in QLD where they have a menu for furry and human customers alike, aparently the stipulation is they must remain in the outside tabled area and not come inside - so if THAT is ok, what is the bloody difference when it comes to regular cafes?

is there some specific permit that must be granted and if so, why aren't they telling cafe owners about it?

What I'm about to say, comes 2nd hand....so don't take it for gospel.

Young couple I know who own a young lab, love to go, with him, to cafes in the Milton, Paddington area. They told me that the cafe owners had had to change things in view of the law. They said there's a distance set down....where the dog has to be, from anyone eating. So one cafe has put up a rail where people can tie up their dogs, at this distance. It means the dogs can no longer sit at people's feet & a table (inside or outside).

that is what my local cafe is suggesting but i don't like it.

"Mr Carruthers was also warned he could cop a $2000 fine if dogs were found sitting in the large outdoor eating area next to their owners.

“This is part of cafe culture, but we have to tell them they can’t do this anymore – which we were a bit devastated about,” he said.

Mr Brewer said the food act permitted only “assistance animals” in dining and drinking areas.

“In addition under the local laws, dogs are not allowed in the former Noosa and former Caloundra regions while the former Maroochy local law is silent.

“Under state legislation, the operator can face a $2000 fine while under the local law a dog owner can face a $200 on-the-spot fine.”

My favourite local cafe has just told me they've had to ban dogs from their cafe as they're afraid of the fines. Oberon loves going and I love sitting with him at brekky. this is ridiculous. I think cafes are an important part of their socialisation. great for teaching dogs manners.

Where can i see this specific legislation?

  11. just my 2cents worth mind.....

i think pb dogs in cities are becoming a fashion statement... the country areas... people often have lower incomes and can't see why a free dog should be des sexed, males especially.

when folks are tight for money they don't see the need.

I think you're right. We're on the rural Sunny Coast and most dogs are staffy crosses. We do have a fair few border collies too but not much else.

  12. I also saw some large spaniel or setter type dog. I didn't get close enough to figure out what it was but it had a long brown(liver) and white coat. And was about 50-60cm tall i'd say. any ideas?

Perhaps an Irish Red and White Setter? I don't know much about them though, not too sure about height.

If an red and white is similar in face shape to the regular red then i'd say not. It was also brown, not red. hmm, off to look at pics.

oh and Huski, i'll be sure to let you know when i visit next.
