What Breeds Wouldn't You Recommend For A First Time Onwer?
pixie_meg replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
yep thought Danes were a little out of place. Why do people think Dobes aren't for first timers. curious. -
No to both. I am so over people(negligent obviously) bringing their DA dogs to the dog park and my boy getting picked on.

I saw a Basset Fauve de Bretagne at the royal show on Friday.

numbers are pathetic. I went yesterday to be with the Afghans. I looked at the catalogue for Borzoi and there are only 2 entries. 2????? Whats the point. Same owner so i guess theres no issue getting best of breed. Wish i could have gone for the gun dogs.

We love our off leash park but that said we have had bad experiences too. To be honest i think Oberon would go nuts if we didn't go. He really enjoys a run with the other dogs. He has been bitten and pinned on a couple of occassions but this has mainly been by dogs that were new or not regular users of the park. We are now very careful about new dogs in the park. We also have the advantage that Oberon is fast so he can easily get away from dangerous dogs. It really bugs me when people bring their dog aggressive dogs to a busy dog park. These people need to get some brains. If we had another dog we wouldn't go as often as we do.

Have The Means To Make A Doco On Puppy Farms
pixie_meg replied to melzawelza's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm just playing devils advocate here... The bolded parts may cause issues. Whilst we are all aware that there are puppy farms out there like this, there are also puppy farms out there who try to meet the absolute minimum requirements of health testing etc, because they cater for the 'educated' buyers who do ask questions. You would be safer sticking to issues that are negatives of ALL puppy farms... overbreeding, not breeding for betterment of the breed, undersocialised. If you start throwing around claims about health testing, there is always going to be someone who comes out with, "but we health test". If you're not prepared to back up your statements it's best to avoid making them in the first place. (I'm not saying that you're not prepared to back up your statements but it can be pretty hard to stand up and say that ALL puppy farms do the same thing when the fact is that they don't.) good point. -
Have The Means To Make A Doco On Puppy Farms
pixie_meg replied to melzawelza's topic in General Dog Discussion
haven't had a chance to read through the posts so apologies if this has already been said. I think a comparison should be made between a puppy farm and a registered breeders. even with dot points on the screen for each. eg. puppy farm - no health testing or behavioural testing - poor living conditions - cages etc - undersocialisation - bitches being bred too often causing health issues - for profit registered breeder - health tests where necessary - breeds for the betterment of the breed - socialised puppies and dogs - breeding adults behaviourally sound - number of litters limited to protect the bitches health etc etc. -
Help With Breed Selection (formerly: Gsp Vs. English Pointer)
pixie_meg replied to Joel's topic in General Dog Discussion
There are a few pointer(and possibly GSP) adults available on DOL. They're not rescues, just often dogs that didn't make the show grade. might be an option. For me I'm a big pointer fan. There are a few breeders on the pointer breed subforum who are nice to talk and there are a number of litters on the ground at the moment. -
proof they can use utensils. lol. I don't think he's thought it through though. best get those dogs some opposable thumbs. i think he was about 4 months old in that pic.

wish i was down that way. oh well.

What Do You Use To Walk Your Dog And Why?
pixie_meg replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
we use a martingale and 6 ft leash. I hate those extendable leashes. They frustrate me to no end. -
Hey I like it I think its great too and a good composition. colours are crisp and it depicts the movement well.

anyone have a link to the dates for the lure coursing. I'm hoping to make the next one.

good post. One of your last points about newbies being caught up in cuteness and not asking questions or researching. Perhaps it would be beneficial for a blurb on 'questions to be asked?' to be easily findable near the ads. could be a link to a page listing suggested questions you could ask a breeder. As well as a list of what makes a good puppy buyer, eg responsible pet ownership, basic dog requirements.

Thanks Sway, thats what i wanted to know.

When did i say all breeders are the same. touchy a little. Quite the opposite, i'm saying that the problem is that there is a small minority that are doing the wrong thing and that they bring down the whole reputation of pedigree breeders for some people. I have had great experiences, i do my research. I know that the majority do the right thing and I really respect breeders what you do and the effort you put into breeding good dogs and finding good homes for them. I'm in no way badmouthing you. I had a feeling i'd get misunderstood about this.

Perhaps re-read my post. Not once did i the admin to do anything, i was just opening up the discussion for possible solutions to a problem. bad breeders are a problem for ethical breeders. I know a few people off line who think registered breeders are just as bad as puppy farmers because of their bad experiences. What about a positive review site. If nothing bad is being said then puppy buyers can either assume that an absence of reviews is just that the breeders are new, or relatively unknown or not good. Positive reviews that include information about after delivery communication, and ethical practices say a lot more than another review saying "my puppy is so cute".

I'd say a good idea would be to take pup to the park first when there aren't many kids and later when there are a lot. Let kids one on one come up to the pup and pat it, and perhaps give treats. My boy was a little worried about kids but now he is very used to them. your own kids are very different to random kids and its the random kids that you need to let your dog know are ok and sometimes a little unpredictable. We often take my dog to the local park/bus stop where there are a ton of kids. its been really good for him.

I was by no means saying that all complaints equalled cancelled ads, I just thought it was worth considering some of these extreme cases. I don't know what goes on behind the scene, and i'm sure many others don't and wonder what does. A chance to get some knowledge of what goes into weeding out the unethical in terms of what canine councils do. Afterall, some discussions have led to a lot of distrust in some CCC's actually enforcing that registered breeders are ethical. I agree, its hard for breeders, they're immediately put as the baddies, justified or not. They're not here to defend themselves, i'm more talking in the case of a breeder of 'unnamed' breed who takes money(full deposits for a puppy already born) from puppy buyers and never gives them puppies. 1 person could be a liar or just bad luck, misunderstanding, but multiple stories of the same outcome, thats a different story. just an example. I can understand why its sticky ground and word of warning is always buyer beware. Just wondering what can be done. Maybe an external site rating puppy buyers experiences with breeders. Much like builder reviews. one bad review doesn't kill you but multiple bad reviews of jilted buyers must mean you're doing something wrong. I know many of us would rate the breeders we've bought from favourably.

I want to pre empt this by saying that i am genuinely interested in how this all works and not accusing anyone of anything. I am concerned however that because of the trust that newbies put in the site, they also extend that trust to what is advertised - rightly or wrongly. I've been reading over the last year or so since joining about many peoples bad experiences with some registered breeders. From scams, to no papers to other unethical practices. Many of these breeders were found on the DOL puppy advertisements. I understand that these are paid advertisements and buying a puppy should be done with a lot of research. But, I'm wondering what can be done to limit unethical breeders advertising. When there is real proof that an advertised breeder is doing the wrong thing, does the admin of this site restrict their advertising or do anything. Especially because of what this site represents being purebred pedigreed healthy breeds, i'd hope that something is done. Perhaps a strike system, advertising at the discretion of the site admin. thoughts?

we kept our large open bags in an aluminium bin. never had a problem with ants or other vermin. Didn't smell of anything but dry food then.

i was 2 weeks early for one of their promotions and they still gave me the promotion, which was free food. very happy.

Depends on the local council i believe as to whether they enforce it or not. They started enforcing it up here just 4 months ago i think it was. over $2000 fine for the cafe. The cafes cant afford the fine so stopped letting us bring our dogs. They may start enforcing it down in Brisbane at any time when they feel like it.
