Oberon seems to think that me having a shower is an opportune time to steal yet another one of my bras.

Tick Treatment , What Do U Reccomend?
pixie_meg replied to springdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i find its pretty easy to find them. a definite bump even when they are super tiny and then they get bigger as they feed. they get to about the size of a plump pea when engorged. I check my dog very regularly. don't forget to check in between toe pads. -
i think they mean dogs like the labrador or mixed with ie. lab x poodle sadly. they do mention long coats so probably golden retrievers.

Tick Treatment , What Do U Reccomend?
pixie_meg replied to springdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
we get lots up here. Dogs in the area generally develop a form of immunity. heres what i use to identify the bad ticks. http://www.lanecovevet.com/ParalysisTicks.html The most common types of ticks found on pets and livestock are the paralysis tick, the brown dog tick and the bush tick. The latter two are brown in colour, where as the paralysis tick has a slate grey body which becomes lighter as it grows. -
Yes Challenge is best dog and best bitch. It's 5 points plus one point for every animal of the same sex over 6 months of age. So in the scenario given above, it would be 5 points plus 7 because your own dog is counted in addition to the dogs beaten. If they win best of breed they get 5 points plus one point for every dog AND bitch over 6 months beaten, in addition to the point for your own dog. Group and Best In Show are a maximum of 25 points, again awarded on the basis of 5 points plus 1 point for every dog or bitch over the age of 6 months in the group or show. It is possible to NOT get a 25 point group, they aren't automatic unless there are a minimum of 20 dogs of age in the group. This is particularly applicable at smaller shows. Best In Show is usually automatically 25 points. thanks.

so challenge is best dog and best bitch? and so say they beat 6 dogs to get challenge then they get 5 + 6. then if they win best of breed how many more points? then group? etc, etc. its to a maximum of 25 pts??
-
Just a question about points. At a championship show are points awarded for say reserve best in group or only if you get BIG do you get the points? still confused about the points system.

I'm so glad you said this. we're considering showing my 1 yr old but its so daunting to think that perhaps your dog needs to be perfect from the get go. my boy is exciteable and will bark and cry a little because he wants to play with other dogs. so hopefully we wont make too big a fool of ourselves. barking i'd assume is not typical amongst his breed in the ring though.

good point, but its so hard when people and thats people who know sighthounds think your dog is too skinny. i thought he was fine before anyone said anything, so i should just go with my instincts on it.

thanks nekhbet and persephone for the suggestions, fairly certain the local butchers wouldn't do ox cheeks or pigs heads though. if they did they'd probably charge through the roof as is their style up here.

I've also been told its an age thing too but i've also been told that a bit more weight will improve his general health and show in his coat. not that he's unhealthy at all, i just want to make sure we're doing the best by him.
-
i talked with the breeder yesterday briefly but also wanted to hear from the raw community and others on suggestions for fattening up. he's not exactly skinny but it would be good to find a way to get him enough energy foods. We've had more success with his weight since feeding him raw.
-
My boy is currently on a raw diet but i'm thinking about supplementing his diet with a power formula as he could do with a bit more weight on him and seems to have a high metabolism. he currently eats more than double the raw feeding recommendation. I'm considering both eagle pack and artemis with their power formulas which contain more fat. Anyone have recommendations? how else would i add fat to his raw diet safely? oil? meat fats? which would be better?

perfect for the day of the dead. Halloween is just around the corner. -
what a great capture of jumping the creek.

In a word, yes. But he seems to have had an unusual shed in that he lost his puppy coat just before winter and has kept going with some more minor shedding since. Supposed to only shed once or twice a year, so i think this is a fluke.

oh yeah its exactly like a heart in that pic.

i love the bubble photos so pretty.

I don't think its acceptable at all that he growled. We had this problem when our boy was a 12 week old pup. We saw a behaviourist and there was no pussy footing around the issue. the behaviourist and us took a pack leader stance. if my boy didn't relinquish the food to us then we used a lead and made him. It was all about who was the at the head of the pack. I now have a dog who instantly moves away from his food if i go near him. I don't tease and i don't take his food away but he recognises me as being higher. I'd highly suggest seeing a trainer/behaviourist about this matter.
