  1. Easy... Australian Shepherd i did think it was way too easy.
  2. add to that the borzoi is not one either. eek.
  3. ok, my turn. Can only think of one question. Name a breed where despite the name of a country in their name, did not originate there.
  4. No idea - but for special bonus points, what breed did the Captain of the Titanic own - it wasn't on the boat when it went down though. And the clue, Q Vic owned these too, although it was her daughter in-law who really took an interest in them. And thankdog it wasn't. Borzoi!!
  5. This is what I use on Howie. Just brain storming here but I wonder if some of those other products get a reaction due to Oberon's low body fat ratio. Might explain the lesions. Is Ivermectin stored in body fat???? something worth considering i guess. he is quite low on fat.
  6. George Bush also had a Bouvier De Flanders(sp?) They gave it away as Mrs Bush couldn't handle it or train it and it was pulling her over. Atleast so said 'dogs101' on Animal Planet.
  7. Just wanted to update the thread to say that Oberons test results for MDR1 were normal. So no problem there. We'll be trying Proheart tablets.
  8. lovely puppy. Goals for the year are 1. to have Oberon stack nicely and be less distracted in the ring. This is something i've got to work on. its very exciting for him with all those other dogs around. 2. Get a challenge cert worth more than 6pts. 3. To have lots of fun. We're on 6 pts after 1 championship show.
  9. ok, but for what purpose? Crossbreeding isn't happening for a genuine reason, its generally because people think they can make cute dogs and make a buck. breed development where people are aiming for breed recognition seems to be what you are talking about. This is different to everyday crossbreeding.
  10. Thats not to say that the poor examples of pedigree dogs were by registered breeders. far more likely that the shih tzu with a bad bite was by a byb than a registered breeder. Doesn't sound like you support pedigree dogs. Especially saying that there is nothing wrong with 'proper' crossbreeding. There is a huge variety of breeds to choose from to suit any person or family. We don't need some crossbreed, bred purely for fun or looks. People aren't breeding crossbreeds for purpose, their breeding for fun or money.
  11. There aren't too many deerhounds on this forum.
  12. oh wow. poor thing. Its a GSP right? He looks like he's been in an accident?
  13. They can the result of immune mediated issues; allergies; foreign bodies; and yes, bacteria .... to name a few things. I would guess there are more causes, but I'm not familiar with them. For the past 2 years I've been 'battling' allergy symptoms with my boy and at one point, just when I finally seemed to get the hive outbreaks under control, he broke out into cysts. In part it seemed as though he wasn't tolerating the foods he was eating - we (the naturopath and myself) hypothesised that the toxicity build up from what seemed to be an inability to digest properly was causing the skin eruptions, including the cysts. We saw it as just one other means of the body trying to rid itself of the toxins in his body. I've since had a hypothyroid diagnosis confirmed and now that he is on medication to help thyroid function, it would seem (dare I say it?) that his skin outbreaks are desisting. You might like to consider things such as diet - I don't know your dog; how long you've had him; whether he generally has a healthy coat or whether you've had other incidental health issues; how long he's been eating the current diet he is on; etc. (and I'm also not a Vet nor a Canine Nutritionist) so I'm not suggesting this is a cause, but only that you give it some consideration before you rule it out. Also check your dog's nails to make sure that they are not so long (or even so that they are not so short) that they could be digging into his pads to cause the cysts - or even to just make them worse. I had to watch nail length with my boy because of where his cysts were located and for a while it was better for him to have his nails a bit longer than normal so that they weren't digging into the protruding cysts rather than at least just pressing against them. ETA: When I first noticed the cysts on my boy's feet, they appeared as just slight swellings to the side of and along the outside edge of a toe pad. Then they seemed to become blood filled and angry before finally bursting and going down. Sometimes they would almost disappear but then come back up. I continued the Calendula Tea washes (let his foot stand in a bowl of it for a couple of minutes at a time) frequently, but also with a mind that I didn't want his feet to be continuously wet. Calendula Tea has anti-bacterial agents as well as anti-inflammatory agents. I really hope its not those cysts but it does fit. His coat has always been great but he has intermittent rashy sores(coincides with his heartworm meds, thinking it might be the flavouring). he just got over those. He eats a raw diet with the occasional treat(makes me also think of the flavourings) and is 15months old. He is otherwise alert and very healthy.
  14. what causes interdigital cysts? bacteria? the vet said the first sore is a cyst but wasn't concerned about the other swelling partcularly. The vet thinks its abrasions from slipping in the wet when running. We'll rest him. I think its likely that he got some bacteria from the mud thats been sitting about. like poodlefan mentioned, them damp and the heat.
  15. I wouldn't think it'd be something poisonous, but will mention it to the vet. we have grass seeds around but cant see any in his paw. how do they impact?
  16. Oberons paw pads in certain areas are swollen. it started Sunday night when we noticed his wrist paw pad had a swelling below it but attached that was pussy. it popped and pus gone, Monday when it was knocked it would bleed reasonably. Today it seems better but now one front paw pad and one hind leg paw pad are inflamed and swollen. And uncomfortable to the touch. We were at the beach Sunday morning, and we've had wet long grass. These are the only things out of the ordinary i can think of. We're off to the vet with him at 11.30. Any idea?
  17. thank you for that. I will have to check with my vet as to the actual test result. His allergic symptoms however do not match the list. his issues appear to be only skin lumps which develop into sores.
  18. He has had the mdr1 gene test to which he was negative. is it a different test you are talking about? i know that the mdr1 gene is one thing that can make you sensitive to ivermectin but he could also be allergic without having the gene issue. Proheart contains moxidectin, does anyone know how similar this is to ivermectin?
  19. thanks for your thoughts on the matter guys. i think i'll try proheart. i'd be pretty bad with the dimmitrol since its daily.
  20. So I wrote in another thread that Oberon seems to be allergic to ivermectin based heartworm prevention. Now i could try moxidectin based prevention like proheart but i'm a bit wary about that too. so heres the question. Advantix deters mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and mites. so since it deters mosquitoes which are the carrier of heartworm, would using it during the mosquito season be a decent heartworm prevention? If he doesn't get bitten by mosquitoes he cant get heartworm right?
  21. same thing happening here. did fine at his first show and then at his second he was all over the place.
  22. Last show we used fidos whitener only and then Schwarzkopf liquid silk conditioner. He came out so nice. I figure if i try these human ones and they don't go so well i can still use them on myself but tests of them are working out nicely. Nice flowing coat.
  23. oberon tested fine at 12months. so badger may be fine.
