his show does come with a warning that states don't try it at home and consult a dog behaviourist if you have issues with your dog.
-
Fuzzy, you obviously haven't had to deal with a dog who doesn't respond to positive reinforcement. I have. And i certainly am not after a powertrip as you put it. Its a very narrow minded view that positive reward based training works on every dog. I use Cesars methods and i don't hurt my dog.

anyone know offhand how much we pay per kilo for our pets in excess baggage. and i assume if our baggage is less than allowed we can include them in that amount too?
-
See i see the first as being the alpha or pack leader. i agree they are a peacekeeper but not really a 'dominant' personality. The 'dominant' dog is usually not a pack leader. I personally think you'll have some submissive personalities and some dominant personalities and varying degrees in a litter. I think dominance isn't created through lack of training but is more likely made much worse through lack of training and poor owner responsibility. I don't have much experience but i see dominant nature as something you handle not necessarily cure but would be interested to know others views on handling the dominant nature.

Well heres my version. And i've had a good trainer class him as dominant. He will try to dominate other dogs, as in his physical behaviour is so that he will try to mount a dog or put his head over another dog. not aggressively but often gets him in trouble with other dogs. With us he will test us. he considers our bed to be highly desirable and if he's on it and we want him off he'll push his luck. We tell him "off", he knows we're serious but he'll hold firm often until he is physically removed or thinks i will remove him. He wont bite us in these situations but will try to intimidate(warning behaviour, not growls, he's not a growler) us into leaving him there.

that looks like one beautiful and unique little pup there. he's fantastic. so nice that Lola is enjoying his company.

Hitting The Ring For The First Time
pixie_meg replied to angelsophie's topic in General Dog Discussion
goodluck! We aren't ready for using food yet. he's too unpredictable with it. -
when mine was a pup he would flat out refuse to go in public. always waited till he got home. Now he will go in public but will make sure he can see whats going on around him while doing so. In terms of being clean. He gets very dirty sometimes but generally the the dirt comes out of the coat easily and they do groom themselves a little but not like cats do.

Came across this interesting spelling on gumtree. Not to mention calling a 'whip it' a mini grey hound oh dear. i know rottweilers often get called rockwheelers. and borzoi get called boyzoi(sounds a bit japanese to me).
-
i love the cheek puffing. i'd be interested to know if other breeds do it. i also like how borzoi use their front legs to tackle 'prey' (he does this with the kids in gentle play). Its similar to how a cheater trips prey or grabs them when hunting. i think saluki's do it too from what i've heard.

1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) First time owner, and now showing. 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? See other posts. 3. How common is it in Australia? Not very common. Its a rarity for someone to recognise the breed. And not very many at shows in QLD 4. What is the average lifespan? see other replies 5. What is the general temperament/personality? I'll just speak from my experience with my boy. He is fun loving dog and is up for rough play, fetch games in the yard. But he is also quite happy to do absolutely nothing all day. He is only 18 months old so he's not an adult yet, but he has happily spent life as mostly an indoor dog without complaint. He's a bit dominant and early on we had to become respected pack leaders to him. He is smart but wont follow commands unless there's something in it for him. This is part of that independant borzoi nature. That said he does sit, drop, roll over. He isn't terribly destructive like many puppies(of other breeds) can be. He's a chaser, very typical of a sighthound. very alert and an attention seeker(this part is not typical) 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Mine is fairly happy with some fetch games, and tag once or twice a day, sometimes just zoomies. We also walk him most days. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? from what i've heard most borzoi would be good for the first timer. I had one that didn't care if you told him off which is so not typical. I love his proud personality though. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Absolutely. Mine is often alone at home. He just thinks he'll sleep the day away if i'm not there. 9. How much grooming is required? very little considering the coat. I brush mine maybe once or twice a week mostly due to grass seeds. He always looks clean and doesn't smell doggy. Before i started showing i washed him once a month. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? My kids were 3 and 5 when i got my Borzoi. He chased them and was pretty rough with them. I'd say they were a bit too young for his level of play. i'd say over the age of 6 is more appropriate. My now 6 year old handles his antics and he respects her. They're not your typical childs dog for playing with. just my opinion from my experience with one borzoi 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? not that i'm aware of. 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Find a breeder you are comfortable with. My breeder is amazing and we are still in contact despite being states apart

Help With Making My Akita Take Her Medicine
pixie_meg replied to Lena.'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm a cruel bitch when it comes to tablets and we've had some very large tablets here. I open his mouth and shove the tablet past his tongue and then close his mouth and stroke his throat. he doesn't like it much but tolerates it. how far back are you putting the tablet. you need to put it right at the back so they cant bring it to the front. -
Absolutely agree as someone who has been there done that. i was bitten by my resource guarding pup and definitely had to do something about it, especially since i have kids. do something about it before she gets bigger and harder to deal with.

Caboolture Kennel Club Show On Sunday
pixie_meg replied to MissMonaro's topic in General Dog Discussion
If anyone can tell me whether any Borzoi were there or how many entered. Unfortunately Oberon is still recovering from his cut toe so we couldn't make it but would love to know how many were there. -
Big Congrats Erin. Well done to you both.

Another option is to buy two wire compost bin packs from bunnings. They are made of 4 wire panels the same as you'd get on a wire crate. they come with connectors to make up the 'crate' and you can buy additional zipties to make it more secure. you make it 2 panels by one panel and 2 panels on top. I use it at shows and its a lot cheaper and easier to transport. mine cost about $50. They fit my borzoi so should fit most giant breeds.

I know how you feel, its not a good feeling leaving them at the vets. Sending positive healing vibes to Daisy and some chill vibes to yourself. It will all be ok.
-
Thats Awesome!!! very cool.

yes there is a greater risk of infection. I've not done antibiotics and used colloidal silver instead for some punctures. I kept the wound open, cleared the scab and flushed the wound with it. its anecdotal but this is what works for us. It is however safest to see a vet technically.
