I voted sometimes as I try to avoid it, but obviously it can't always be avoided. :laugh: I am not a germophobe but I really hate the sensation of being licked (by anything, not just dogs) and hate the smell of saliva. Having my face licked just makes me feel gross.

I noticed this too! I know joe public can be ignorant but that's a bit scary.

I can't imagine how the daughter must be feeling. Obviously she'd looked after the dogs before, but I'd be pretty wary of letting an old lady in with large powerful dogs when there was no one around. It's easy enough for a healthy adult to be knocked over by a dog that size.

It might depend on the person but I don't think it's difficult to tell a bitch in season - particularly in standing heat. The vulva gets very swollen.

I don't know about revenge mixeduppup, probably more pecking order. Dog got revved up, saw an opportunity and took it. We used to have to be very careful with our old BC as he would get very stressed when ever my friends and I (young teens at the time) would play wrestle or run around screaming. Had we not stopped or removed him from the situation, he probably would have bitten one of my friends in defence of me. Slightly different scenario but same dynamics going on.

Wowza. That sound at the end is freaking creepy. Glad I didn't listen to that when it was dark out. The first part sounded to me like what the dogs in my neighbourhood do when they can hear a siren or see an animal like a fox or something. There was quite a lot of howling going on as well as normal barking. Kind of bizarre that everything went dead quiet as soon as that creepy sound happened.

An elderly lady (now passed) who was a friend of the family used to tell me very fond stories of her pet fox. I have no idea how she managed to keep it in suburban Sydney but I have a feeling it was long before any tough pest-keeping laws came in. She never told me about the smell but they had a very special bond. She was so distraught when he died that she had him stuffed and put in her living room to continue to survey his domain. :)

Not long before my boy died he was very ill, and (bless him) tried to hide all his nasties in the only carpeted room in the house - my room. We did our best trying to scrub it out, even to the point of the carpet accidentally getting the colour bleached out of it. But unfortunately in the end we had to replace the carpet. I sincerely hope that isn't the case for you! Best of luck!

I must say I'm surprised the dog wasn't desexed by the breeder before they rehomed him the second time round. When I was younger, we rehomed several adult dogs undesexed as according to my mother, 'let desexing be the new owner's responsibility!" Even as a young child I pleaded mum to desex them but it never happened. All of those dogs went on to be backyard bred several times apiece.

Was the prosecution successful? I'm not sure if it's the same one but that rings a bell regarding a Dalmatian? I think his name was Tango or something? I can't quite remember the story but I'm pretty sure he was seized from his owner, and was rehomed. The guy was charged with animal cruelty, successfully I think.

I just can't understand people overfeeding their pets. I assume that it must, to a degree, have something to do with anthropomorphising them (i.e. "Oh poor Rover's giving me his big cutesy eyes, he must be hungry! He'll be ever so sad if I don't feed him") I agree that desexing needs to be factored in. My cats are on a strict twice a day regulated feed; very rarely do they get extra treats. My desexed female Somali only eats exactly what she needs and often doesn't even finish all the food I give her, whereas my desexed male DSH is on a strict permanent diet as I know very well that he would happily eat himself to death, literally, if food was left out 24/7. Thanks to good management he is a solid but trim cat. Particularly with my DSH I noticed steady weight gain from about three months after he was desexed, until I adjusted his food. I would feel incredibly guilty feeding my pets enough that they would become fat.

Good info here from experienced people. Apologies for comparing living creatures to objects, but I find that this is a pretty good analogy: Say you're looking for a new car. Obviously, there's tonnes of choices around - private seller, used car dealer, dealership etc. You come across two cars you like. One is from a dealership that offers a roadworthy certificate, full service history, warranty, RACV check and includes registration. The other car, although the same make, is at a shady used car dealership. Although it looks to be in okay condition, there's no warranty, no service history, no roadworthy and is unregistered. However, it's considerably cheaper than the first car you looked at. Which would you choose? For me, it would be the first car all the way. As for differing prices in different states, I don't know anything about that. I do know that there is a heavy concentration of 'breeders' of a certain breed in QLD who produce 'rare' different coloured puppies at inflated prices, but that's not related to Beagles in any way.

Individual RSPCAs' resources are beyond stretched, so sadly it's not particularly feasible to hold each individual animal long enough to assess, rehabilitate and then reassess. I ended up adopting a cat from the RSPCA, which 8 days earlier I'd found wandering and dropped him in. He was due to be PTS because he'd come down with a mild case of cat flu, which he'd contracted during his stay there. They were so completely stretched for resources and had more animals coming in than cages to house them, so when the weekly vet assessment came around, any animal that wasn't pristinely healthy was PTS. I digress, sorry, but when you look at cases like that it's easy to see how unrealistic it is, in current situations, to be able to even keep animals long enough to adequately assess them. There's a big problem but it's no easy fix. eta: Sorry, didn't see that there were rescue groups willing to take animals on for the RSPCA. My comment is therefore probably irrelevant. Why is it that they don't release to rescue groups?

Unfortunately ann those tests have proved rather unreliable. There's been a few stories about purebred pedigreed dogs being tested and coming back as cross breeds!

I don't really think the blanket answer is a good wallop. I can count on one hand the number of times I was smacked as a child, and it was only ever used as a last resort when I'd done something really bad. I turned out just fine. The fact that two kids ten and under were even out roaming on their own is a problem on its own, and an indicator of how they're parented. What a disgusting thing - and then of all things going around trying to sell the kittens?? I am so glad that none of the tiny babies died during the ordeal.

I've noticed a few people trip up with my username. It's sort of a double whammy. :laugh: I remember being surprised when I found out GT was male - also was very confused by both Steve and Erny for a very long time. I was convinced Steve was male for a good 12 months! Samman and DR are the only two that I've always known are male. Just too manly for their own good! :p And yes, I am female. :D

AHAHA Way to go! I hope she was fired for her dishonesty. She was not only stealing off of you, but she wasn't even putting it in her till for her company, don't get me wrong, NETHER of those situations is a good thing. I trust you got your money back in the end? But then, as a personal thing I find it rude when somebody is on the phone when they approach my register at work. I feel anybody on the phone ought to step out of the queue :) Still, when people hand me too much money - and last week I had two people who did so, one $50 note and one $2 extra - I give it back to them. My personal feelings on how they are acting towards me do no matter. I had a stupid moment once and accidentally gave somebody $100 too much in change. He just looked at me and handed it back. I was so grateful that he didn't just walk off with it!

Well there are lots of things wrong about that situation. If you weren't on the phone at the checkout it wouldn't have happened. BUT, the little thieving turd shouldn't have stolen the money and deserved being sacked and the possible criminal record. What a complete cow and sucked in she got caught. I have no tolerance for thieves. +1 I can't believe she even thought she could get away with putting it in her pocket and not getting caught. Disgusting.

I looked on his website. Seemed genuinely passionate about the breed and invested the time and money to import dogs. I agree though that having them on the trading post is probably not a good idea. Not so great if the pups fell into the wrong hands. From a young age I was fascinated by the Saarloos Wolfhonds and Czech Wolfdogs I saw in the breed encyclopedia I had. Beautiful, fascinating dogs.

What an awful situation, mantis. I'm confused though, how do some random tenants of the building have any right to interfere, let alone have any bearing on such a situation? One can only hope that the son has a change of heart once all the emotions die down. I would stay close just in case they grow tired of him and decide to PTS.

Definitely a gun dog I think, and I'd say something similar to a pointer. The stockiness is probably just a slight miscalculation of your dad's. That's just what I can see anyway. :)
