Heartbreak At Loonie Farms Animal Rescue
mr.mister replied to Alyosha's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
Oh god. -
It really depends - Border Collies can do fine in a small area, provided they are kept mentally stimulated and exercised - and breeds like the Border get more out of mental stimulation than just basic running around. Some lines also have less drive than others; and even a laid-back individual in a litter may suit. I wouldn't take a border out of the equation completely yet.

People Who Cannot Control Their Dogs.
mr.mister replied to mr.mister's topic in General Dog Discussion
At the moment, my main concern holding me back is that she will become a nightmare for my OH and his family - and, as bad as it may sound, they are my priority in the situation. Nothing to do with not wanting to be a 'dobber'. I have, however, contacted the council for details on reporting as they only had information on their site about dangerous dogs who specifically "attacked a person and caused serious injury". Still awaiting a reply, and in the meantime I will be keeping an eye out whenever I am at OH's place for any other stupid behaviour on the dog owner's part. -
People Who Cannot Control Their Dogs.

As I drove off the owner and the lady were talking; I have no idea what they said to each other. I will definitely look into reporting it though - but I will consider all possible consequences before I do so. Thanks for the replies everyone. -
Poor little Tip. RIP boy.

People Who Cannot Control Their Dogs.

I've never reported someone before, how do you go about it? Also, she is my OH's next door neighbours, not mine, and well.. she's just a bit of a bogan to put it gently. She seems nice enough but I think could easily become a nightmare neighbour. Myself and OH were the only witnesses I could see, so would I be causing issues for OH's family if I did report? -
OH and I were walking out the door of his place yesterday when we notice his next door neighbour. She lets her Dane X out of the yard to put him into her car - no lead or anything, and next minute, of course, he bolts. He starts doing huge zoomies around the street, zigzagging the road and nearly getting hit by a car. The lady attempts feebly to call him back - to absolutely no avail. I'm watching the dog running along the opposite side of the street, when suddenly, he seems to go into prey-hunting mode and starts sprinting. I'm wondering what on earth is going on when I finally see what he's 'hunting'. A poor middle-aged lady minding her own business walking down the footpath. We're both frozen in horror as the dog swerves at the last minute, but then starts bailing the poor lady up. She's pushed right up against the fence, quite terrified. Through all of this, the owner is strolling over to her dog, calling it to come and looking apologetic. She takes her absolute bloody time getting to the dog and the poor terrified woman, but then when she gets there the dog goes and sprints up the road and out of sight. I drove off after that, but it made me so angry and I felt terrible for the poor woman being bailed up. Why is it so hard to clip a leash on a dog? Why is it so hard to teach a dog basic obedience? Ugh. Rant over. :

Just A Silly Little Girly Sook. -sorry Pls Move To Off Topic
mr.mister replied to mr.mister's topic in General Dog Discussion
No, we went out as a bunch of friends together to do friend stuff. But yeah, you're right, I should have expected it. Haven, I know, it makes us feel like such n00bs And yes Roz.. thankyou for the diabolical plan - I'll keep that one in mind! :D -
I know, what's the point of posting if I suggest people ignore? I'm just a little sooky at the moment, so typing something up and getting it out of my system is much less time-consuming than writing it down, and also clears my head better so I can sleep. Anyway, I went out tonight with friends + my OH (all guys) and was really excited to have some fun. We went lazer tagging, arcade gaming and finished with retro nintendo 64 gaming at home (I am very bad at 64 games - never had a console as a kid and just dont enjoy it). Thing was, I was surrounded by competetive-man syndrome and got absolutely smooshed into the ground in everything we did - ie, I always came pitifully last. I also got a little bit left out after a while as the guys were all wrapped up talking about relevant blokey stuff and left me to wander around on my own. Reminded me way too much of high school! It wasn't a 'boys night', it was a friends getting together night, and I'm a little peeved now that I came away from it being completely utterly bored and realising I didn't have any fun. One friend who I'm particularly close to noticed and said, 'I'm sorry you didn't have much fun', but then dear OH decided to pipe up for me and say, 'Oh no, I think that was only toward the end of the night!' Thanks, OH. Anyway, silly sook, so yeah, sorry. I didn't want to say anything to them because they were all having so much fun - I would've felt like a bit of a killjoy. Now I've got that out, I'll sleep much better tonight. Thanks for that, collective dol community! :D edit: and now I've been a complete idiot and posted it in general. oh deary me.

What Is Pacing And What Is 'mouth Your Dog'?
mr.mister replied to pixie_meg's topic in General Dog Discussion
With the mouthing, do you just part the lips, or open the mouth for them? -
This reminds me of my friend who believes every Stafford is the devil reincarnated. Her reason? "Oh my friend told me about a friend of his who got bitten by one." She was as stubborn as turd on a shoe and wouldn't take no for an answer - despite facts supplied to her. Sigh In regards to your friend: Kids, like dogs, need to have interactions with all kinds of different things to help them be balanced people. I've seen a few kids now who have an unnatural fear of dogs because they have never been exposed to one, and their parents have kept it that way or even worse - instilled a fear in the child as a way to avoid the risk of dog related injuries.

Yeah, like whoever bred the puppy advertised in my local paper a while back - an Italian Greyhound x Pug.
-
I was rather making a comparison to modern day classifieds. I agree - they were onto something back then.
-
I was flipping through a 1939 lifestyle magazine (fairly typical woman's mag) my lecturer loaned to me for an assignment today. I got to the end and noticed what I suppose would be today's classifieds, or something similar. In the middle of the page was a feature on the Irish Terrier, explaining the breed and its assets etc. All around the article in a border form were ads for purebred, registered (or whatever was done back in those days) litters. Great Danes (from imported lines and encouragement to show the pups), Sealyham Terriers, etc etc. In the bottom right corner there was even an editor's note stating that all breeders found on this page were "guaranteed above reproach". No 'schnoodles' or 'pugaliers'. It was a really nice thing to see - it seemed so commonplace - you'd be hard pressed to find anything like that these days. I enjoyed imagining what it would have been like back then. Just an interesting observation I guess.

I just saw on the same website as that ad, a listing for "Boader Collie" puppies.

Didnt Know Bull Mastiffs Come In Blue
mr.mister replied to memphis09's topic in General Dog Discussion
Can't see anything wrong with someone advertising baked goods on fb. Sorry couldn't help myself. -
I used to have only a very small list, but since being on dol it's most certainly grown. The top two are my two favourite breeds my a mile, with BCs being my heart breed. I am dying to own a Borzoi too, eventually. The rest are in no particular order. Border Collie Borzoi Finnish Lapphund Shetland Sheepdog Pyrenean Shepherd Kooikerhondje Kelpie Koolie Whippet Greyhound Pharaoh Hound Italian Greyhound Boston Terrier Scottish Deerhound Staffordshire Bull Terrier Japanese Spitz :D I might get there one day.. with the use of the philosopher's stone, perhaps?

Look at those big eyes. Congratulations on your new addition.

 Oh my god! Sounds like a stubborn, sexist, stupid, set-in-his-ways old man. : eta: I wonder how he'll be feeling if those pups of his come down with Parvo! Some people shouldn't own animals, full stop.

Here's a link to a font website, and some nice script fonts: http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=601 Hope that helps.

poor boy. Sending lots of eating vibes your way..

+1 That being said, my breed being BC's, if a dog was structurally sound but had zilch working instinct or drive, then it wouldn't really be a BC to me. Ideally, a good combination of both soundness and type is in order. But yes, I agree with what pf has said above, if I had to choose, it would be soundness.

I understand that completely and I don't have any practical solutions - I wish I did. I am not 'condemnin' them, at least I am not trying to. But it is in my opinion that they shouldn't be using live dogs to practice on. But I do understand that that is my opinion and am greatly outnumbered on this thread as to what is a suitable method to teach students. Hi Leelaa, I completely understand where you're coming from - I had much the same mentality when I was younger. Euthanasia of healthy animals is something that greatly upsets me, I've cried quite a lot over it over the years. As it is though, it is happening in the masses, with no end in sight. The very best we can do is attempt to make acceptable lemonade out of the sourest of lemons. This can be done a number of ways, and one is to give meaning to the death of the poor souls who have run out of chances.
-
So, these dogs are put under GA, operated on, and then euthanised. How is that a cruel practice? The dog gently slips under GA, and from there is completely unaware of the proceedings. It feels no pain. It dies as it was destined to on death row, but now its death has been given meaning because it has aided a vet student to learn and thus make them better vets. Whether anyone likes it or not, it's more than probable that there will always be fit, healthy, unwanted dogs getting put down simply because their time is up and there isn't a home for them. That, IMO, is a meaningless (but not cruel) death. Utilising such dogs so that their death benefits other dogs does give their death meaning. Whether or not the Melb Uni's practices are as good as those at the QLD Uni that sparked this discussion months ago, I have no idea.
