  1. So glad to hear the girls are back safe and sound! Thank goodness someone decided to do the right thing and hand them back. Best of luck for an easy delivery of healthy babies. :D
  2. Shared on FB. How shocking. I hope the girls get reunited very soon with their owner - well before the time of whelp.
  3. Perhaps he's so elated that he doesn't feel sexually frustrated anymore? Seriously though, I'm not aware of that kind of behavioural change with castration. Perhaps he was just in a playful mood.
  4. Great solution - dump them to be killed rather than investing in training and socialisation. And then they'll just go out and find another breed to give a bad name. Despicable. Congratulations Victoria.
  5. I don't like people that draw paralels between their dog's sexuality and their own sexuality. Please don't talk about your testicles here. Agreed.. A dog has no notion of the fact that he has testicles (let alone what their function is) and do not miss them in the slightest when they're gone.
  6. I know someone who wants to call their next dog Pumpernickel. No idea how that will go, but no I don't really think that 3 syllable names make too much of a difference to a dog.
  7. From what you've posted previously (if I'm not mixing you up with someone else) your dogs love eating all kinds of interesting things. My boy would do anything for an almond.. does that count?
  8. My sister has had three rotties - every single one an absolute sweetheart and the first grew up with her young daughter. Courageous and loyal when needed but deep down just big gentle sooks - never unpredictable or aggressive. That there is even a poll on this makes me sick. By the way things look now dogs as a species will be banned from Australia within the next 20 years..
  9. One of the reasons that people are so paranoid about this is because you can't prove your dog's heritage. Why is this important? Because legislation is being passed in Vic where a council officer can ID your dog as a pitbull or pitbull cross and you will have to prove that it isn't - they don't have to prove that it is. If you have no documented evidence of heritage, you will be in a pickle. If your dog is registered you will have to comply with dangerous dog legislation - even if he is placid. You will need to comply with fencing regulations. he will have to wear a muzzle outside your property and he will never be allowed off leash on public land - never to set a paw at the local dog park. If he isn't registered they can come into your house and seize him, then he is PTS. Your dog is tan and muscular. I wouldn't call him a pitbull x but some would. Suddenly those papers look pretty darn important... Very well said Megan.
  10. So many missed opportunities in that doco. I agree that it was more of a socio-economic observation than a message about BYB, though hopefully it may make some people stop and think. God, that father of two was a real deadbeat. Not wanting to lower himself to do certain jobs and then breaking into a place for an 'opportunity'? How is that raising the standards. If he really couldn't afford his dogs vaccs then he couldn't afford to go to the pub either. And don't get me started on 'Pitbull' Talking about her Corso that would attack any person or kid without hesitation. What a nutjob!
  11. It can also be particularly dangerous if the dog has been previously roused on for growling or other similar behaviour and then there's no warning next time. What a terrible thing to happen to the little boy. Very well said, Poodlefan.

Does anybody know of a specific MP or similar that we can contact about this? Would we contact the member in our area or someone in Melbourne?
  13. Definitely thebookdepository.co.uk Often have sales on their books and do free shipping worldwide. I have bought over ten books from them now and have never had any issues - and they have all arrived within the two week mark. Only thing is if you are buying multiple books you might receive them separately over a few days, as that is how they work out their free shipping.
  14. Sorry, my comment was on the whole BSL issue in general rather than just what has been sparked here. The government is just worried about votes so goes with the general consensus rather than do any research or put in an interim measure. The Councils and governments are to blame as they should have put in stricter regulations for owning pit bulls so that not any idiot or redneck/yob could own one and the community all round would have been protected from these owners. The dogs are not to blame but the stupidity, ignorance by our government and the owners who do not prove to be responsible. But how do you stop a certain person owning a certain dog though? In the end I think the only way it can be discouraged is having severe consequences for the owners of the animals that do become dangerous, rather than a slap-on-the-wrist fine. And even before that happens, to invest in some serious education schemes to teach people how to handle their dogs (of any breed) and how to avoid dangerous situations.
  15. Sorry, my comment was on the whole BSL issue in general rather than just what has been sparked here.
  16. It's really interesting. When governments are upgrading infrastructure or creating new laws in regards to the environment or what have you, they normally consult the professionals in the particular field before doing anything. Not so in this situation. Something I find quite fascinating. Hopefully (but improbably) they'll listen to those vets and professionals who are warning against these knee-jerk reactions.
  17. I'm currently in the process of attempting to talk a family member out of randomly breeding their dog. I don't like my chances. You have got to be kidding me! They must have cement in their head. :
  18. That would be terrifying! If I were you I would report the owners. It might be a frail little old lady with a swf next time.
  19. Ask him if he is willing to fork out what can be an astronomical amount in vet bills if the dog inherits some genetic disorder from the parents. I know from reading around on DOL that some people have spent upwards of $20,000 in vet bills alone because of their dog's condition. And I definitely agree with whoever suggested taking him to a show. There he'll be able to meet the purebreds in the flesh and in their prime, and you will be able to talk to the breeders thoroughly about the breeds. Just make sure you approach them after they've been in the ring as then they won't be in such a crazed rush preparing the dogs. Keeping with the object analogies, buying a crossbred dog from backyard breeders is akin to buying a bomb car from a dodgy seller, without checking any of the service history, repairs history or mileage. If he thinks that's stupid (which I'm sure he would) why would he do the same thing with a dog? Good luck.
  20. He is papered, and as far as I know, not yet. However, with all of these people who keep mentioning what a good specimen he is and that she should breed him, I doubt it would take long for her to find a suitor. She wanted to breed him with her partner's young stafford bitch because they would make 'handsome puppies' but luckily the partner is against it and is getting her desexed. Thankyou for the suggestions guys. Does anybody know of the health tests (if any) that are routinely done for rotties?
  21. Hi guys, A family member has a male Rottie that she has now decided she doesn't want to desex, because everyone around her keeps telling her he is so stunning that she should stud him out. She has a less than stellar record of her pet-keeping over the years, and can't see the problem with just 'letting him breed'. She knows nothing about breeding and of course the dog isn't health tested or hip scored. Unfortunately, she is incredibly headstrong and will probably brush any information I have discouraging her aside, but I figured it might be worth a shot consulting DOL for any factual links to information that may scare her off it. It's a really long shot getting her to not do it but I am at least going to try. Any information at all - again, facts with links supplied, would be fabulous.
  22. Dogs aren't put under anaesthetic when they're being collected. As far as I know.
  23. Ah. I had no idea. So Dudley and liver/brown are different things? I stand corrected.
