  1. Exactly my experience! I wanted everything to be perfect and had really high expectations for myself and for Bella - because we have relaxed a little, so has she! :D
  2. Well, its been less than 2 weeks since my original post, and I'm pleased to say that things are much improved. Hubby & I are getting more sleep, Bella is calming down (a bit) and we are starting to feel like she is a real part of our family. We still call her "our nightmare", but it is an affectionate term! Its amazing how much things can change in such a short periord of time! Looking back on it, it wasn't that bad, but I'm sure thats what new mums say about labour....
  3. We are very careful with her - have baby gate at the top & the bottom of the stairs....
  4. Could it have anything to do with noise from the electronic equipment up there? We have a tv, foxtel, an amp, and various game systems (although they are not always on at the same time)
  5. Our Bella does this - she actually just started doing it regularly. We also don't make a fuss over her when we come it, but it doesn't seem to matter. It is just a little pee, we take her outside right away and she does the rest of it in the garden.
  6. That wasn't me! My parents live overseas, so even if I wanted to do that it would be pretty difficult (not to mention expensive!)!
  7. The stairs are fine - 5 regular tile stairs and then 3 regular carpeted stairs - she has no problem going up either set, but we don't like her going down the tiled ones by herself because she tends to jump and then bail. The only difference is there is tile downstairs and carpet upstairs. She is totally fine hanging out with us downstairs - lots of playing, but is able to settle herself too. She doesn't act like she is scared of upstairs - she gets hyper, crazy and out-of-control in terms of biting and chewing things. If she was scared, I would have thought she would be a bit more cowering. I think the peeing is about her general level of craziness upstairs.
  8. We have a split level house, and often watch tv upstairs a night time. Bella, our 11 week old Bernese seems much more comfortable hanging out by herself (and her toys) downstairs. This is particularly upsetting my husband, who was really looking forward to a cuddley dog. When she comes upstairs, she gets really hyper, won't settle and often pees. Any ideas what might be going on?
  9. Bella is so much better than she was even a week ago! She probably could sleep through the night, but we take her out once anyways to go pee. She goes right back to sleep, then wakes us up at about 6. More days than not, she has been accident-free And we just had some people cleaning out our gutters while we were at work, and they said she was the best behaved dog they have come across. Can't imagine life without her... Only a couple concerns at this point: 1) She is still biting, although not nearly as much 2) She doesn't seem to want to hang out with us at night. I'm going to post more about this in a new topic to get suggestions.
  10. Don't get me wrong - I love Bella all the world and she really is a good puppy, but I just have to keep reminding myself that she is just that: a puppy. Things are so much better than they were 3 weeks ago when we got her. She and the cat now "play" (albeit, under the cat's rules), she is not biting nearly so much, and she is growing up so quickly into such a lovely dog! But sometimes I wonder what I used to do with all the spare time I had!
  11. Thanks everyone for your support! Bella is 11 weeks old today and we are still struggling with the basics. Mostly peeing & pooping outside now (averaging 1 accident a day), she is starting to learn not to jump up on us, but she just gets so excited and hyper when we are home!
  12. Just looking for a bit of support! Does anyone else find having a puppy exhausting? I've never had one before, and I can't believe how much work it is (I know, everyone told me it would be, but I didn't realise to what extent!) It's making me wonder how my husband and I would cope with having a baby!
  13. Thanks everyone - spoke to the breeder today & she said that a 5 minute walk to a park, a play around, and a 5 minute walk back was ok. Only another week or so to go until 2nd vaccination!
  14. I need to give the breeder a call later this week, so I'll ask her then. You're right, though: Carrying is not going to be an option for too much longer! 10 kgs at 10 weeks, and growing!
  15. Yes, Bernese is a giant breed. She has only had her 1st vaccinations.
  16. We have a 10 week old Bernese Mountain dog (Bella, who I've talked about in posts before). We've been starting to take her for short walks & she really seems to love it, but I've been reading that we shouldn't be walking her yet. Is this too soon to be walking a puppy?
  17. Tried spraying water last night & this morning & it seemed to work, although I don't know if it was the novelty of it or if Bella really didn't like it. Time will tell I guess! Corvus - aren't new games fun!?!? Bella's new game this morning was to jump up on my black pants with a yoghurt-covered mouth...
  18. Yelling doesn't work, but I'll try the spray bottle tonight.... Thanks!
  19. Hi there, We have a 10 week old Bernese Mountain dog, who is doing really well in most respects. The only problem we can't seem to get under control is nipping at, biting and pulling at the bottom of my pants or my dressing gown when I'm walking. She has learned not to jump up at us now, but where she is biting is right at her eye level. So far, whenever she does this, I stand still and don't look at her, but she is so strong and just keeps on tugging, eventually ripping my clothing. This primarily happens when we are walking (so obviously she sees the pant legs moving, and thinks its a toy). Help! I can't afford to buy new pants every few days!
  20. Hi everyone, We have a nine-week-old Bernese Mountain dog and have been trying to toilet train her for the past week. Sometimes I feel like we go 3 steps forward, then 2 steps back. Is this normal? How long does it generally take to train a puppy to go outside? Does it vary by breed?
  21. Would love to hear how it goes....we are having the same issue with our 9-week old Bernese!
